Convenient adapter, like the built-in empower but failed after two use!

    • Written by from Columbia

Bought the adaptor with the laptop about year and a half ago. Had it on travel within the 90 days and it worked flawlessly in the air on a BA Boeing 767 and in the rental car. I like the design and have never left any part behind anywhere! However when I tried to use it a third time about a month ago it was dead. Can't find any info on how to trouble shoot the device. I guess the fuse may have blown but how to get at it? I give it only one star, not because the device stopped working but because of the lack of trouble shooting info from Apple. My old empower adaptor for my old Al-Powerbook still works fine but has a different plug.......grrrr.

    No issues ever!

    • Written by from Algonquin

I bought this a few months ago, and every flight that I have used it on has been flawless. It keeps the current charge (does not actually charge it) regardless of what I do on my computer. I would highly suggest it to other road warriors!

Plug easy to loose & will not power MacBook pro 17"

    • Written by from Allen

Had an earlier MagSafe adapter with a 2007 MacBook Pro 17". It worked great. I could use the MacBook Pro 17" for 9 hours straight on a plane. However, I lost the plug and had to buyba new model since Apple does not sell just the plug. I also got a 2009 MacBook Pro 17".

Last week on a 4 hour flight, the green light was on, the battery indicator showed not charging, yet after 3 hours the computer shut down. I did not even get a notice that the battery was low. The MacBook Pro acted like it was on running out of the battery and not extra power was supplied.

    Worthless.

Haven't even had a chance to use it...

    • Written by from Ewa Beach

I bought this about 3 years ago and was so eager to use it because I travel overseas often. Since then I haven't been on ONE plane that has this type of plug. I can't even tell you how well the product works because I haven't had the chance to try it out. Maybe someone else can shed some light on why I haven't encountered the right plug on the plane, but stick to either DC, usb, or even the regular plug for the wall. Unfortunately, I'm disappointed in my purchase...

Too easy to lose the 20mm (cigarette) adapter

    • Written by from Benton

The power cord uses a separate adapter to plug into the 20mm (cigarette) adapters commonly found on airplanes. It is very easy when pulling the power cord out of the 20mm socket to leave the adapter in the socket. Apple does not sell replacement adapters separately so you have to re-buy the entire cable and adapter.

Too Expensive for a Green LED

    • Written by from Newton

Green LED was on for the duration of my flight...and the battery drained in mid flight. Pretty useless...not sure why anyone thinks this is a good product...never had a power problem with any other notebook..shame on you Apple.

    MagSafe power adapter

    • Written by from Dallas

Works great on a plane that supports either the EmPower receptacle or 'cigarette' style adapter. However, anyone that flies American much will be out of luck if on a 737 with a typical 'wall' style receptacle. So far, I haven't found any Mac compatible adapter for this type receptacle.

The good news is even though the Mac won't charge while using MagSafe adapter, you won't run our of power and it will charge your iPhone or iPad when its connected to the USB port of your Mac.

    Great product.

Excellent product, at least in my experience. It worked like a charm for me on a Virgin Atlantic 747 and also a United Airlines 767...

    Perfect Power Cord Device

    • Written by from Newark

A separate adapter isn't a design flaw, it's an end-user flaw, entirely related to personal accountability. There are 2 types of power supplies used by airlines (EM Power & DC cigarette outlet) so you can't have a 1-piece design. The inability to charge the battery isn't a design flaw, it's a requirement by the airlines (selectively enforced, but universal policy non-the-less, and some airlines even require you to physically remove the battery while in use), which is why it's called a power cord & not a power/charging cord.

    Bad Design

    • Written by from Austin

The two-piece adapter end is a BAD DESIGN. Sure I could be more careful, but I shouldn't have to be. It's a BAD DESIGN. When you've been on an overnight flight for 12+ hours and haven't slept, or multiple flights that are equally as tiring, it's very easy to forget during to check the connector and make sure the end of it didn't stay in the aircraft's power port. Unplugging and packing up cables, laptop, headphones, etc. in a hurry on a cramped plane where you can hardly move is challenging enough without having to add something else to think about.

Furthermore, the fact that they don't sell the removable adapter piece separately is RIDICULOUS. I'm about to buy a third one of these FLAWED devices!! I'm going to superglue this one together because in 5 years I've never seen an aircraft that uses the smaller, inner adapter for its power ports.

In the event you haven't heard

    • Written by from Chicago

This product is great! I've used it a bunch of times with no problems whatsoever. $50 is a lot, I agree. But since you spent how much money on your device? Possibly over $1500? You should take better care of your belongings and stop blaming Apple for your own shortcomings. It is not Apple's fault it's customers are lazy, inattentive, careless, and quite possibly illiterate when they're on an airplane.

    A fix?

    • Written by from Miami

After leaving the removable part of the adapter on airplanes twice after getting no more than two uses out of either, I am trying what I hope will be a fix on my third adapter. I've added electrical shrink tape around the joint of the two pieces to (hopefully) prevent the pieces from coming apart. The tape goes barely forward of the shoulder of the add-on piece, so I expect that the layer of tape will not prevent the adapter from properly engaging in the airplane plug.

I agree with those who say that this issue is a design flaw,. To blame customers for a problem that keeps repeating (because customers are stupid?) is rather old-fashioned thinking and not likely to enhance customer satisfaction ratings. Apple: the quick fix is to offer the removable piece separately for a very modest price. But certainly your very clever engineers can design a plug with a simple proper fix. A twist lock, perhaps?

Best Solution - Yes, It POWERS buy DOES NOT Charge

    • Written by from Addison

I've gone non-stop EWR to HKG maybe a dozen times and am very familiar with the "in-cabin" power problem... Without question Apple has again developed a very elegant (and happily small) solution.

    Heres' the deal:
There are two power-socket standards in planes - (the weird one is supposedly safer for the airplane and you've GOT to align the plug exactly) - the other is simply the same as a car's cigarette lighter socket. This fits both - essentially there is a standard 12-v car charger "cap" which covers/converts for the smaller style.

This device unfortunately DOES NOT indicate when it is powered (so, if you have a dead socket on the plane, you'll have to figure it out by the Magsafe socket not illuminating or our Mac telling you it's not an "A/C" power).

THIS DEVICE CAN ONLY POWER BUT NOT CHARGE YOUR MAC. Powering a Mac takes less "juice" than charging (seriously, how can you get a 7 hour battery charge with only about 90 minutes on a charger...? You simply cannot do this with the power supplied on a plane) - THIS IS A COMPLICATION YOU NEED TO CONSIDER. My general rule is, if you have a line-power source - start using it right away - don't run on battery until you get low...

Yes, the Magsafe plug will illuminate once the Mac is POWERED, but will only stay GREEN (even though you are not fully charged.)

    Looks nice, but NOT performance

    • Written by from Villa Rica

I have purchased a total of three of these things thinking that perhaps there was something wrong on my end. They simply DO NOT WORK. I have plugged these things into a variety of vehicles to keep the power going on my various Mac laptops (which range from a G4 to three MacBooks and two MacBook Pros). They simply do not provide an external source of power. Instead, I use a portable outlet to plug into the power source. From there, I use the delivered power supply that comes with the computer to plug up my computers.

    nice product...

    • Written by from Chevy Chase

This is a fine product that I dutifully tote around in my bag. I have never, even once, found an airline seat that has a socket to power my toys, though. Maybe it 'cause I always am stuck in coach with the rest of the riff-raff. If my company had their way, they would put me in the cargo hold with the )(^%% dogs and cats.

    Come fly with me!

    • Written by from Los Angeles

I only fly with AA and this fits in all the ports in Economy, Business. That's on both international and domestic flights.

Possibly the most useful Apple product I own. I'm using it to power the laptop right now. Not bulky like other adapters. Shame it doesn"t charge but like someone else said - better to save the power for the aeroplane!

I don't find that it has two parts to be an issue. Concur that you should just learn to not be forgetful. Might pay off in other areas too!

    Works great, wonderful design...

    • Written by from Clovis

Okay, first off, let's get the little stuff out of the way. Yes, It works. It works just fine. No it doesn't charge, but I'd rather have the aircraft generators powering the Main and Essential DC busses of the aircraft, not charging my silly laptop. (I'm a USAF aircraft mechanic.) It really bothers me when people think that aircraft are just being flown with pixie dust. Deal with the constant power/no charge. It's far worth it.

Now, the glaring problem. The design. I do not see it as a problem, since the plug is actually TWO DIFFERENT PLUGS, not just a wire with a connector on the end of it. Most airlines seem to use the larger cig-lighter type plugs, so I can see where the confusion might lie. However, the simple fact that someone forgets to pull out the large round thing they plugged in baffles me. Look at the cable. If you don't see a big end on it, I'm sure you've misplaced it. NOT a design flaw. It's separable BY design. If it wasn't supposed to be separated, and it did, THAT would be a design flaw. Don't blame the company for your absent-mindedness.

    Really bad product design

    • Written by from New York

I fly American which usually has charge plugs to use the 20 mm adapter in. It usually works fine although sometimes there are issues with the contact so I have to jiggle the adapter in the plug.

I flew Delta once and they don't have ANY capacity to accept either of the adapters (EmPower or 20 mm).

HOWEVER, the idea of making the 20 mm adapter a separate piece is a TERRIBLE idea. The other day, in the confusion of exiting the plane, I pulled my adapter out of the plug but I left the 20 mm tip in the plug and did not notice this until I got to my home. I called American's lost and found, but of course they're never going to go look on the plane for this tip and mail it to me. So I went to the SF Apple store and they said THEY HEAR THIS PROBLEM ALL THE TIME (ARE YOU LISTENING, PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT?) I asked if I could just buy the replacement tip, but of course they only sell the entire unit. So I had to spend another $50 (already a ludicrous price) to get an entire new MagSafe Adapter. This is really not cool at all. Fix this product so that the 20 mm isn't separate - the risk of losing it is too big and I'm not the only one for whom this has happened.

I'm going to try to get Apple to reimburse the $53.66 I had to spend to compensate for this poor product design.

Probably useful a couple of years ago.

    • Written by from Milford

it looks like the airlines are phasing the plugs that this adapter uses. I just did a round trip on United from Hartford, CT to Seattle and although the plugs were there for the adapter the power wasn't turned on to them. The 15v restriction is a pain in the neck because this device would still have some use if it worked from the 12V that I got out of the lighter in my car. According to the flight attendant United is retrofitting their fleet with United States Standard two or three prong 110VAC/60Hz power plugs.
