Works as advertises at a good price

    Written by RZ from Pittsburgh

    Jun 19, 2008

This drive works as expected as a "SuperDrive", a DVD-burner at a great price; many would complain about the lack of additional functionality, or incompatibility with hubs, but remember this is advertised to just a DVD/CD drive at a very good price; many other companies charged 3-4x more for the same peripheral; Apple's nice on this one if you ask me. As with compatibility, this USB device's power requirements are out of spec, which means this devices draws more power than the standard USB protocol can allow. Even though hubs can be powered, the physical ports can't deliver more power than the spec! All those other drives have big bulky AC bricks--this one has just 1 USB connection--you can thank Apple for that!

This products works as it should, at an affordable price to most people, and delivers it with the ease and elegance expected from Apple.

    Perfect for Macbook Air

Apple got this just right. Perfect small and sleek compact design. Works flawlessly. I have no problems with no more than one USB port on the Mac Air. I just plug this in for a CD installation or to burn some CDs/DVDs.

    Fast and works perfect

    Written by JW from Elkridge

I use these all the time for installs in my business and they work great. Others have posted that they seem slow, but thy are not. the programs they mentioned are HUGE installs. It is definitely faster than the CD/DVD network share. I wish it worked with other Mac computers, but I do understand it needs the upped power of the MacBook Air's unique USB Bus.

Compact, portable... only for MacBook Air?

Written by JR from New Brighton

    Mar 22, 2008

I love the design of this drive. It works well, it's thin, the price is right... it only works for the MacBook Air. Hmm...

Okay, I know millions of Mac and Windows users would would pay out the nose to get a drive like this. The price is around the same as other portable optical drives, and it's very travel-friendly. Maybe some people want to copy discs, or multitask by burning more than one disc at a time.

It would be nice if this drive worked with other computers instead of just the Air. Still, wonderful product.

    Amazing

    Written by MU from PITTSBURGH

This SuperDrive is great. Fast, Quite, and Sleek.

The reason it will not work on a USB Hub is that the USB port on the MacBook Air is special. It's designed to pump out a lot more juice then a normal USB port. Anyone complaining that it takes up the only USB port, well, tough luck. The MacBook Air was designed for people working in an almost completely wireless environment. Its state of the art technology and minimalist design is hopefully what more and more computers will start looking like as we make a transition to all wireless connections.

    Great peripheral

I'll start by stating that I'm not part of the "USB-junkie" mob. The Air has a built-in trackpad and keyboard, and my Airport Extreme + USB-hub can provide unlimited ports for external disks and printers. Simply put, the Macbook Air Superdrive is the only thing that occasionally puts my sole USB-port to use, and performance-wise it's indiscernable from a built-in Superdrive. I'm very pleased and content with my purchase, and so will anyone be as long as they put the Macbook Airs wireless capabilities to good use.

    Exactly Right

    Written by IM from Carrboro

I picked up one of these when I got my MacBook Air almost a month ago, and it sat on my desk, unused. The other day, I needed to reinstall my virtual machine, so I dug out my XP CD, and plugged this thing in, and it worked great.

While it would be nice if it would work through a hub, I just ran a USB extension cable out of the MacBook Air, and can unplug my hub from that, and plug this in, so it works out fine.

    USB?

The person who wrote the review about the person whom made the product is an idiot, obviously has no knowledge. This drive is intended for the macbook air usb, not any other laptop or computer, therefore look else where if you want an external drive. However, if you have a macbook air this is a stunning product, the design in flawless and it beautiful. Its fit for its purpose therefore I will give it 5 stars!

    Very Pleased...

    Written by RV from Jessup

    Feb 20, 2008

I am very pleased with it. works very well with my Air, and hardly emits any noise.
I knew that it wouldent work with my other macs because since it runs off of the usb, theres a different amount of power needed for it.

    Thanks Apple, Kudos!

    Follow the Instructions, please

    Written by JJ from Atlanta

    Jul 25, 2009

I connected the new SuperDrive through Kensington PocketHub Mini 2.0 and it did not accept the CD-RW. When I connected it directly to MacAir it worked like a champ! It makes sense to read Instructions carefully. A beautifully designed accessory,

    New design

    Written by DG from Spring

    Mar 21, 2008

It's beautiful and I love it but you could add some features to it like two USB an Firewire ports on each side because people keep complaining it doesn't work with a USB hub. It's either that or make your own hub.

Its a great compact drive to use with your MacBook Air does exactly as it should. Not sure why people think it should do more, its called the SuperDrive which is the Apple name for CD / DVD drives on all the other Macs.

I use it all the time for the MBA and have never experienced any problems with it. Works every time I use the eject command. Not sure what everyone else is doing or not doing to get it to eject, but mine is just fine every time.

Worked Great Right Out of the Box!

    Written by CB from Dallas

    Aug 14, 2009

I received it, took it out of the box, plugged it in to my Air, inserted a CD and it recognized it no problem. It immediately showed up on my desktop. And ejecting it was a total non-issue! I pressed the "eject" button on the Air (to the right of F12) and it promptly ejected the CD! Every time I have used it, it has worked perfectly fine.

I don`t know how anyone can give the superdrive less then 4 stars it works great and flawless the only reason I give it 4 stars is because I think 100.00 dollars for it is kinda high buy it and u will be happy.

    Why not bluetooth?

    Written by JP from Tacoma

    Apr 1, 2008

I think this product is great, i mean, have you ever seen a cd dvd reader/writer that is this small? i haven't.
But the thing is that a lot of people do use a flashdrive a printer and need a cd at the same time. it is impossible to print something directly from a flashdrive without a wireless printer, which isn't always available. You can't multi task either. what of you needed to move your presentation to a flash drive, then print something while reading a file on a cd. That would be horrible if you had to get it done quickly. I think a bluetooth or wi-fi cd drive would be perfect for a computer that's supposed to be wireless. or maybe a wireless usb hub (maybe one about the same size to remind someone of a shuffle?).
