Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive
On my third one, about to be on my fourth
Written by SF from Anaheim Hills
Aug 8, 2009
This think is the most temperamental device Apple has ever created. I hope they are coming out with a new version of this, because this one stinks. It has swallowed several CDs and now it acts like there is a CD already in there and won't accept my disc. What I hate most about it is there is no way to manual eject anything.

Eject button!?
Written by NB from Oakville
Jul 3, 2009
Apple wasn't thinking much while making this..
there's no eject button on it!!
I now have a CD stuck inside of it, with no way to get it out, since it isn't recognized by my mac.
Waste of money unless you need it.64 of 118 people found this useful

WORST THING EVER!!!
Written by LG from orlando

I consider myself an apple fanatic, but this has to be by far the worst product I've ever bought from apple..
I've only use it twice, and both times it got the Cd's stuck and I'm still trying to get it out. Nothing works!!!85 of 115 people found this useful

why isn't there an eject button???
Written by MG from Foster City
Apr 21, 2009
I've had this for about six months, yet I only use it if it's absolutely necessary. Every time I used it, I had difficulty trying to eject it. Now, the disk I put in is not even recognized by any MacBook Air, and I cannot eject the disk.
Why doesn't Apple put an eject button, or at least a little pinhole to manually force the disk to eject when problems occur??? This is a major problem.195 of 237 people found this useful

Bad Cable Connection
Written by DG from Lynwood
Apr 5, 2009
Mine is about 5 months old...and the cable at the base of the drive has already cracked! You can see the silver wires. The bad part is that, this drive always stayed at home...I have only traveled with the drive only three times.
I know now, why they don't sell a protection plan for this device...
Buy it only if you really need it....111 of 126 people found this useful

Cable wearing out
Written by DR from Columbia
Apr 2, 2009
Not well constructed. The cable connection at the base of the drive is now frayed and showing the metal wire. It's obviously not made as well as the connection on the power cord. I've had it less than a year.
Drive still works but I'm pretty disappointed as a long time mac owner (20 years). I'm also someone who takes very good care of my equipment.102 of 110 people found this useful

Would be a wonderful accessory...if it worked
Written by JF from Carlsbad
Mar 7, 2009
I've used the Superdrive a total of 8 times. Had problems with disc sticking around uses 6 and 7, but eventually would come out. This time I had to physically break into the drive to retrieve my CD. Expected better quality from Apple.

STUCK, STUCK, STUCK!
Written by LW from Oakland Gardens
Jan 2, 2009
I've had this for a year. I dread using it because I always have problems retrieving the discs! I have to hold it on its side for just a 1/4 of an inch of the disc to show. I have to use the tips of my fingers to quickly grab the disc. If I miss....I have to try again! It sometimes takes 8 to 10 tries! Please, put an ejection button on the outside of the superdrive or a hole (to eject with a paper clip) like on the big Mac machines!

Good unless you plan on using it with something other then your macbook air
Written by BJ from Murray
Sep 21, 2008
I bought this planning on using it with both my macbook air and iMac so much for that idea. I was hoping to interchange the drive between my two computers since I copy cd's and dvd's all the time on my iMac I thought I would kill two birds with one stone by buying this, because I occasionally need to use a CD on the road and I like to just copy CD/DVD's on the fly then it turned out that I couldn't use it with my iMac. I should have done more research into the product but if you are planning on using it on your other computers go with another 3rd party drive.

What's the point really?
Written by JG from Auckland
Sep 12, 2008
Why would you have more than 1 'almost' (depending on your working style obviously) necessary external gear when the MBA has only got 1 USB port. For me this means, either read something of a DVD OR use the internet at work. So what's the point of a drive that blocks all other (except WLan) means of communication when in use?? Please Apple, use your brain and apply some common sense. Yes, the MBA is for
'on the go' but should that really make it unusable for anything else?70 of 110 people found this useful

does not work with mini disk
Written by BM
Jun 7, 2008
The size is nice but one would think that small devices would work with small media. This drive however will not take a mini dvd, the type of media used my mini dvd video cameras. I have recently switched over from a windows laptop to 2 macbook air and now depend on a external drive to get my media from video camera to computer for editing and playback.

Doesn't work with any USB Hub!
Written by NG from Los Angeles
Apr 15, 2008
I regret purchasing this drive. Because it does NOT work with any USB hub there is no way to use ethernet and the DVD drive at the same time.
I hope someone comes out with a USB hub that is compatible with this drive.225 of 323 people found this useful

USB drive doesn't work on a USB hub - useless
Written by AS from Mountain View
Mar 11, 2008
I don't know what they were thinking when they made this thing so that it won't work on a hub. It's completely useless therefore. What if, like me, you work in a wired environment a lot? I can't burn data to the drive or upload data from the drive to any network share, because you can't plug the ethernet adapter and the dvd drive in at the same time, and the dvd drive doesn't work on a hub. You would have to be a complete idiot to come up with that one.

5* for looks -4 for usefullness/not USB hub compatible
Written by NC from San Francisco
Mar 4, 2008
I spent a good portion of the day "troubleshooting" trouble that wasn't trouble with my usb hub. Want to install a driver that requires dvd & printer to be plugged in at the same time? You can't. Ever. Because the "Super"drive won't work on a hub. LOVELY.
So basically - it's pretty but it can't type. Will make a gorgeous $99 coaster for my coffee cup.70 of 103 people found this useful
