My 3rd Apple LED Cinema Display...
Written by FW from Mesa
Nov 12, 2009
In the past 3 days, I have gone through 3 Apple Cinema Displays. I was very excited to get this display...but I have to agree that a lot of what people are saying about the color shifting, dead pixels, etc...is partially true. When I picked up my first display, there was a huge dead pixel on the bottom right hand corner. I also purchased a new MacBook Pro for my partner and was able to have the Apple Care cover both the MBP and display. Luckily I dealt with a very customer friendly Apple Store here in Arizona and was able to return it and get a brand new one. When I got the second LED display, it had another dead pixel and some weird light coming through the bottom right corner. If you've ever seen a laser pointer against a wall, that is what this looked like...especially after the display was on for longer than an hour. Again...I called the store, spoke with a very understanding manager and was told to come in and get another Brand New display. So I get to the store and go through a little inspection of the unit and am given another new box...only this time when they bring the box from the back, it's completely thrashed. Brand new, but thrashed!!! I basically tell the gentleman that I've gone through two displays in the past 48 hours...they were both faulty...I don't live close to the store and I want a decent box. He tells me that this display box is the nicer of the 3 they received that morning. So I ask him to phone another store in the valley and see if they would be willing to honor my exchange? He does. They Do...and I'm on my way to another store to pick up a new display. I get to the store, get a Brand New display with an immaculate box...get home...hook it up...and what do I find? A tiny tiny tiny dead pixel, this time on the left side. I also noticed that after an hour or so of having this bad boy up that the white screen almost has a yellow tone to it. Now I did calibrate it and play with the color; however, it is still the same. I will say that I love this display...BUT I am very disappointed in the lack of quality with the displays I had received. It's not about the money...I don't mind spending 800 bucks...but I do expect to get what I pay for.
The service and understanding I was given was exceptional!!! Apple is wonderful when it comes to customer service.57 of 66 people found this useful

$1800+ and you cant throw in a DVI-D Adapter???
Written by MG from Arlington
Oct 2, 2009
Purchased 2 of these monitors as dual displays for a loaded Mac Pro... yet when you select the additional monitor option you don't get the adapter that allows you to use the second display on your Mac Pro. The Mac Pro only comes with a DVI-D & Mini display video ports. The monitors only connect via mini connector.
Apple! You cant spring for an adapter when I just dropped $10,000 on your setup!? Boooo...
Truly beautiful monitors though... Stunning actually.
Are they worth the price? Not when you price them head to head with other monitors. But if you HAVE to have a beautiful fully matched Apple setup, then yes.66 of 83 people found this useful

Good quality but a highly specialized tool
Written by WV from Wondelgem
Sep 7, 2009
The screen itself is a work of art, a breeze to setup and it performs admirably well with quick response times, accurate color reproduction and acceptable sound quality although audiophiles will obviously want to install dedicated speakers.
My gripes: a) the cables are REALLY too short an I can see this being a major issue for lots of users: I use it on my desk, connected to my macbook pro and even then there's not a lot of margin for arranging stuff just like I want it. Seriously, the cables should have been two feet longer. b) the display is glossy and reflects light, period. I happen to be lucky in having total control over lighting in my office but especially if ypu're in a situation with windows behind you, be advised that you'll either have to learn how to 'look through' the reflections (it can be done) or think about another monitor. c) For this price, connectivity should have been better. For me it's fine because I only use macbook/macbook pro but if you have pc's to connect, start stocking up on connectors or get another screen.53 of 65 people found this useful

Great Monitor, but short cables for Mac Pro
Written by BD from Cumberland
Aug 23, 2009
The cables are very hard to deal with since they are very short, and need to be attached to the Mac Pro. I have the older 24 inch HD LCD from 2004 which has a 400 firewater extension, USB extension, and a DVI connector. The new Monitor has a Minidisplay port, and a USB cable, and a magnet power for the laptops. I am hoping they make a whole longer extension cable or simply longer cable of the USB/Minidisplay ports.
The quality of the monitor is amazingly bright and clear, and my other Apple 24inch HD LCD Cinema does not compare in quality. I am purchasing a 2nd video card in hopes of some improvement to the extended desktop area. May be worth buying a 2nd monitor to match, but cabling even a bigger issue since it will be even another 2-3 feet over.47 of 59 people found this useful

24" Display cable limitation
Written by SK from Eastwood
Jul 27, 2009
This display is excellent apart from the monitor connection cable being far too short to allow the computer to sit on the floor.
I have had to source a third party extension for the mini video connection and find this falls short of usual Mac excellence. A longer monitor cable would be tidier and more versatile.
I hope that Mac rectifies this obvious oversite in the near future.58 of 69 people found this useful

Short cable is a problem for Mac Pro users
Written by SH from Redfern
Jul 13, 2009
This is a stunning display but like some of the other reviewers I believe the short cable is a real problem. I am aware that Apple designed this screen for the laptops but it is obviously intended for the Mac Pro as well. I was about to buy 2 of these to run with a new Mac Pro (with optional second video card to run it) but the short cable means the second display can not be plugged in to the Mac Pro. Lucky I checked the length in the store before picking them up. The screen needs a longer cable or a mini display port extension as an option. Please come up with an alternative soon.

Excellent!... but
Written by JM from san bernardino

This screen is beautiful in every way. It's design goes beautifully with my mac pro, and it's just about perfect for everyday use. I was going to go with a cheaper dell with better specs but decided to go with this one instead because of how much I use (and love) the isight camera, and built in speakers.
The only con is that when is comes to working on projects with this display, it's a headache. If you're working in aperture, or color correcting in apple color, be prepared to pull out your hair. The glare is way too much to deal with sometimes. Glossy is just not practical for someone working in any environment that has light in the background. You often find yourself sitting right in front of the display, moving your head in at an angle just to get a better look. It gets really old really fast and when it happens you begin to wonder why you spent so much on a display (or imac and macbook pro for that matter.)35 of 39 people found this useful

It's good, if you can deal with the glare
Written by SC from FORT LAUDERDALE
Jun 9, 2009
First of all, this monitor is for notebooks. Evidenced by the short cord.
It's a fine monitor except for the glare. It's glass so it reflects. Make sure you do not have window behind you. Other then that, stunning color. The speakers are OK. Better then I thought they'd be. A bit over-priced, IMHO. But it's Apple. :)
3 stars for the color/picture/design and decent speakers. Minus 2 stars for the glare.31 of 36 people found this useful

Apple, you can do better
Written by SB from Prescott
May 20, 2009
We buy several new machines per year from Apple, and this is the first product that I have purchased, and been genuinely disappointed with. The 24" LED monitor and new MAC Pro were purchased together, yet the LED cinema display comes with a monitor cord barely 24" long. This requires us to put the Mac Pro on the top of the desk (creating clutter and inefficiency), and even then, the monitor needs to be at an angle to keep the cord from being over-stretched. There was no extension cord supplied and when we called Apple support, they acknowledged the design flaw, yet still referred us to a third-party vendor to resolve the issue. You can do better...

Nice monitor with some drawbacks
Written by JB from Little Elm
Apr 28, 2009
As a long time Apple user I recently upgraded to this monitor paired with a Mac Mini. I used a 23" LCD Apple Cinema Display for 7 years prior to this switch. Out of the box it looks impressive with the black bezel. The first thing I noticed is that this LED monitor is bright...way too bright. It's like staring at a light bulb. You can turn down the brightness thankfully but that is the only setting.
On the default color setting colors appear to be washed out compared to a recent iMac or other Apple Cinema Display. My other issue is that I can hear a very high pitched humming sound while sitting in front of this monitor when it's quiet at night in my office. It's very distracting like a ringing in my ear. Maybe I am sensitive to this but I never had a problem with the old LCD Apple monitors.
Otherwise it has a very high contrast and incredibly sharp image. The sound from the speakers is mediocre and lacks the low end of the iMac. If I could afford the 30" LCD Apple Cinema I would much prefer that or even the previously discontinued 23" Apple Cinema if I could purchase one. I didn't have an issue with the cord length as it's sitting right next to my Mac Mini. As a long time Apple fan it's disappointing for the price overall.56 of 60 people found this useful

Ridiculously short cable......AAAUUUGGGGHHHH!
Written by KM from Lihue
Apr 21, 2009
I love Apple and have been a diehard user for the past 18 years....but the new Cinema Display's cable is ridiculously short. You have no choice but to have your Mac Pro on your desk right next to the display. Any further than that and the cable won't reach. Forget about putting your Mac Pro on the floor....what were you thinking Apple???? I'm going to start looking for another monitor and return this sucker.

Great as always and expensive as always.

Big, Beautiful Display with Short, Ugly Cables
Written by SC from STAFFORD
Apr 13, 2009
I just purchased the 24" LED display to go along with my new Mac Pro.
Little did I know that the customer target for the display was MacBook Pro users (I have one of those as well).
My choice was either a 30" Cinema Display (non-LED) or this one. I'm not sure why Apple is doing such a poor job in this arena.
The screen is incredible. I have a back-lit Cinema Display next to it for a second monitor and the differences are stark. The LED display is bright and extremely crisp.
The major flaw in the monitor is, -- as other reviewers have posted -- the cables. You cannot connect the monitor to a Mac Pro unless you design a custom desk setup or place the giant Mac Pro on the top of your desk, next to the display.
I had to place my Mac Pro on a pedestal behind my desk. I have to walk around my desk to insert a CD, or access the Mac Pro.
VERY, VERY, annoying.
Hopefully Apple will resolve this issue shortly.
If the cables had just been 12 to 18 inches longer, this would have been a five star review.183 of 188 people found this useful

Great resolution; hopeless cable
Written by PD from TOORAK
Apr 8, 2009
It is either a stupid design fault or irresponsible marketing. I just bought 2 displays. Nowhere did I discover prior to purchase that they are almost impossible to use with a Mac Pro because the cables are so very short. I've moved my Mac onto my desk and just managed to connect them, but I have to stand up to use the CD/DVD tray.
The image quality is great, but one of the displays first ran with a vertical purple line that has now turned pale yellow. It is back to the reseller for a dispute tomorrow. This is my first serious Mac Grump in 25 years.87 of 100 people found this useful

Glossy Screen is Distracting
Written by DF from Oak Park
Apr 6, 2009
Beautiful monitor as far as resolution and crispness, but the glossy screen is very distracting. It's like staring into an aquarium all day.
As a graphic designer and Photoshop retoucher/color corrector, this makes it difficult to do my work. There wasn't an alternative choice for my new Mac purchase, other than buying a third party monitor, or an older (used) 23' Cinema Display. But, I would rather stick with Apple in the long run, having been a long-time customer and supporter.
Last note: You don't get much of a stereo feeling with the built-in speakers, as they are fairly close together. If you want a true stereo "spread", and deeper bass response, I would recommend purchasing external speakers with a subwoofer.135 of 141 people found this useful

Nice monitor / cable is too short
Written by PM from Woodside
Apr 5, 2009
I just bought a new Mac Pro and this monitor. The monitor is great and the built in USB offers (3) extension ports, webcam, mic and speakers. But, the cable is too short!!
It seems that it was really targeted to new Macbook Pros where the laptop will be on the desk with the monitor. If you are a Mac Pro user and want to place the Pro under your desk it is likely that the the cable will not reach. And, as of this writing there is no way to extend the cable.
There are already a fist full of Apple adapters available for mini display port. Seems that Apple missed the boat by not providing for a way to extend the cable for Mac Pro users.67 of 70 people found this useful

Beautiful Display BUT
Written by EW from Kansas City
Mar 7, 2009
This is a beautiful display. I would say that most people cannot argue the fact its amazing to look at. That being said I think apple has fallen short limiting connectivity options on initial release. I made the mistake of not reading that this display was not mac pro compatible (early 2008). Luckily i had a new MBP on the way anyway so i chose to keep the display. I am VERY happy with the quality and easy of use with my MBP but i would love to use it on my mac pro as well. I know there is a video card upgrade coming that i can purchase and get the new display working, but it is after all 2 months out. I really think Apple should release a product more complete and backwards compatible instead of just throwing something out there just to say "look what we have". I can understand not supporting very old macs , but every mac we have (over 15) is less than a year old and not one would connect to the new display. The display should get 5 stars.... Apple Rollout of the Display should get 1 star so i gave it 3 overall. Anyone who compares the quality of this display to a cheap 200.00 display at best buy is blind. Also if you swear by a Matte screen... do not buy this ...its glossy and you will not be happy. I personally prefer glossy.

I love it, returned it, miss it, confused.
Written by DF from Las Vegas

I have a macBook Air, bought this monitor. It makes a very nice combo on your desk. The single cable to the MBA is nice, the fact the super drive works though the hub is very nice. The Display is so clear and bright. Most important there is no controls to fiddle with, the 2 are made for each other.
The problem I had was there was dust on the inside that made it look like a stuck pixels. I exchanged the monitor, the 2nd one has less dust by still dust. I called the apple store, they was going to research. I ended up returning it after a week. I understand it is a known issue there is a exchange program for. The store offered to exchange it for a 3rd time. They however was not able to tell me the odds, or if the issues has been correct perhaps with later stock...
I am back to using my 9 year old analog monitor. The LED display was so bright and clear. I miss it, but don't want to pay 1000 for a monitor that comes with dust on the inside, that you have to live with...45 of 63 people found this useful
