Great Monitor, but short cables for Mac Pro

    Written by BD from Cumberland

    Aug 23, 2009

The cables are very hard to deal with since they are very short, and need to be attached to the Mac Pro. I have the older 24 inch HD LCD from 2004 which has a 400 firewater extension, USB extension, and a DVI connector. The new Monitor has a Minidisplay port, and a USB cable, and a magnet power for the laptops. I am hoping they make a whole longer extension cable or simply longer cable of the USB/Minidisplay ports.

The quality of the monitor is amazingly bright and clear, and my other Apple 24inch HD LCD Cinema does not compare in quality. I am purchasing a 2nd video card in hopes of some improvement to the extended desktop area. May be worth buying a 2nd monitor to match, but cabling even a bigger issue since it will be even another 2-3 feet over.

I love my 24 inch screen almost as much as i love my mac pro, the picture is amazing, the audio is amazing. The setup is so easy it took me about five minutes from when i took it out of the box to when i was using it. It's such a beatiful piece of technology. I know the price is high, but this product preforms, and i am very happy with it.

    Waste and disappointment

    Written by JT from Dulles

    Aug 21, 2009

After waiting almost 3-weeks for the display, I was very disappointed when opening the box I immediately noticed the micro-dvi connector and realized what a mistake I had made. My daughter has a 7-month old Macbook and the external monitor was a gift. Naturally, her laptop has the mini-dvi connector. Well, thinking that perhaps some smart individual at Apple had made an adapter, I called internationally/skype (I work for State Department in Nepal) and spent over an hour on the phone with a tech who said, yes we have an adapter and let me get you that part number. It took him 50-minutes to find the item and by then I was suspicious. As he processed my order I asked for the part number and did a quick google search. Part was nothing close to what I needed and had I purchased it, it would have been more money down the drain. Why make a product with limited use....was enough to sour me on all APPLE products. This one is going back...At APPLE's EXPENSE and I'll purchase a Sony or similar monitor for my daughter.

Best Display I Have Ever Owned

Written by NA from SAINT THOMAS

    Aug 19, 2009

A few weeks ago, I ordered a new MacBook Pro and wanted a nice display for it. As a professional photographer, I wanted something with high quality, good color (ICC support, etc), and good style. The Apple LED Cinema Display shines at all of these, and more!

I love that it can power my MBP, so I don't need to use another power cable.

After I received it, I calibrated it using a Spyder Pro device, and it really shines. I just love this display. I was a little worried about the glare when I first read about it, but there is no glare to worry about unless the display is turned off!

    I can't recommend this highly enough. A+++++

Gorgeous color, but TOTALLY unusable screen!!

    Written by RA from Fullerton

    Aug 18, 2009

Generally, I love the stuff Steve Jobs and team produce, which is why I'm so shocked by the poor performance of this thing. While the color is good, the high-gloss screen is so shiny that I can't use it in my office, can't use it at home, can't use it anywhere there's a window or light on! Seriously.

    Don't waste your money.

Another thing: I've tried a few of the anti-glare screen covers and they don't work either!

best display i ever purchased. looks great, easy to install, doesnt take up space. what else can you ask for? speakers are doable, but doesnt replace separate set. camera is just as good as the one on the MBP. colors are very very vibrant, crystal clear.

no dead pixels, no dust. must buy!

    form over function

Written by MB from Kansas City

    Aug 10, 2009

look, apple product design has always been awesome and widely copied by her competitors. i guess it is no surprise that the designers occasionally get fat heads. case in point, removing the option for a matt/non-glossy screen on the cinema displays as well as the macbook pros. Yes apple designers, we all bow to you in awe for making us use things that you have deemed to look really cool, but do not always function well. I am honored to squint at the outrageously hip glare coming from the now ubiquitous glossy displays — honored, humbled and thankful — and therefore giving this product a masochistic five star review. i will learn to love the pain.

I am also thankful that you unanimously decided to remove that ugly cluster of numbers and function keys and stuff from the right hand side of all the wireless keyboards. How could we have lived with that silly eye-sore of a number pad bit of the keyboard for so long?! Again you have saved us from ourselves. Bless you.

btw, why do your displays have those silly stands? The stands are so trite and they violate the simplicity of the core form. i hate them.

    FINALLY!

    Written by BT from Oakville

    Aug 9, 2009

Finally the perfect combo! I've got a 13" pro and now the cinema display expands my desktop beautifully but I can still use the laptop on the go. The screen is crisp and beautiful, speakers etc.. are okay nothing spectacular but a nice thing to have integrated.

Even better yet, you can get the display on the refurbished site for much cheaper and it's in pristine condition!

    Five Stars!

    Probably OK for some people

    Written by JJ from Scottsdale

    Aug 7, 2009

Pros - It is a beautiful piece of office sculpture. The picture is bright, sharp and clear. The input coordination with a MacBook Pro or a Mac Mini, including auto off and on, is excellent making it a well designed companion to those computers.

Cons - My first one had a strong magenta to cyan color cast across it from left to right. The replacement had a weaker, but still noticeable magenta to cyan cast from the lower-right to the upper-left corner. For the typical consumer who will use a photo or the default aurora desktop this monitor is usable. For someone who needs a color accurate display for professional quality work it just doesn't cut it.

Additionally the sound quality is OK but was not near loud enough so the computer really needs powered, free standing speakers.

Conclusion - Way too expensive with substandard quality control. The number one job of a monitor is to display an accurate picture. It's not at all an "Apple quality" device. Even the old Samsung 245BW that I'm writing this on has more consistent color. It's my first Apple disappointment and a big one at that.

    Awesome!

Written by MF from BOCA RATON

I was nervous about spending the money. Then I saw a refurbished Cinema Display online at the Apple Store for $599. It's great. I've connected my Macbook Pro and now it is like having a desktop and portable all-in-one. I was worried about the cables being too short, but it works out fine for me, I can place my laptop on the floor. There is virally no glare. I have a room with florescent over head lights behind my desk and screen and there is no problem. The speakers are fine for Skype and short videos on utube, not great for music. I'm happy with this purchase and love the crisp bright screen.

Superb with GT120 and Early 2008 Mac Pro

    Written by SH from MONTICELLO

    Aug 3, 2009

This is an absolutely stunning display. I do programming, graphic design, and video, and this display performs well for my purposes.

I ordered this with the Nvidia GT120 (cheaper than the upcoming mini display port adapters, and better than the Early 2008 Mac Pro's stock Radeon HD2600), and the two work great together. I did have to reset the PRAM to get the Mac to recognize the new card (cmd-opt-P-R at startup), but that's easy and not unusual.

You need to set up your workspace so that you minimize reflections with any glossy display, but the payoff is IMHO a crisp, bright display with good color (I calibrated with an eyeOne). I also appreciate the fast power up from display sleep, with immediate and stable brightness; no need to let the backlights "warm up" with this LED display. No dead or stuck pixels on this particular unit.

The built-in iSight and microphone are nice. The speakers are okay, but I use external speakers for music, and this display's speakers for alert sounds, which works great. Short cables, but okay in my setup. More USB ports would be nice.

    But overall, an outstanding display.

Absolutely gorgeous, but not perfect for everyone

Written by SR from Menlo Park

    Jul 29, 2009

For me, this monitor is phenomenal. It is the only product on the market that has 1) a quality panel (IPS), 2) a glossy finish and 3) LED backlighting.

I initially went with a Dell 2408WFP since it was half the price, but due to the heavy anti-glare coating, found text very difficult to read and a major strain on my eyes. Even better matte coatings (e.g. the current 30'' Cinema Display) have a shimmering or sparkling effect easily seen on a white background, which I find distracting. The LED Cinema Display has no such issues - text is clear and sharp. Reflections are certainly present, like on any other glossy screen, but I don't find them distracting.

The only faults I can find with this monitor are the lack of inputs (Apple really should have included a simple DVI port to appeal to a much broader group of consumers) and the fact that my monitor came with two dead pixels (both out of the way and not distracting, but unfortunate for an otherwise flawless piece of hardware).

Displays really come down to personal preference, so check this thing out in person before buying to see whether the reflections will bother you or not. In the end, you get what you pay for, and in my opinion this monitor is well worth the price.

    24" Display cable limitation

    Written by SK from Eastwood

    Jul 27, 2009

This display is excellent apart from the monitor connection cable being far too short to allow the computer to sit on the floor.
I have had to source a third party extension for the mini video connection and find this falls short of usual Mac excellence. A longer monitor cable would be tidier and more versatile.
I hope that Mac rectifies this obvious oversite in the near future.

    Excellent Display

    Written by BO from Stafford

    Jul 27, 2009

Have used the display for about 4 months. No issues concerning visual capability. Images are clear and I get no reflection from office (florescent) lighting. The ability to charge my laptop via the display is great. Additional USB and firewire ports on back are very useful and where as I initially thought that these ports should be on the side, after four months of use my opinion has changed and I now believe that Apple got it right by putting them on the back. Only issues are the inability to turn or rotate the screen (taken care of with purchase of rotating platform) and the inability to raise or lower display height. The rotation and height adjustment issues are only things keeping this product from being 5 Stars.

Perfect for MacBook Pro, but can't turn-off!

    Written by DS from Philadelphia

    Jul 17, 2009

This display is gorgeous and very helpful if you are editing video but prefer to use one larger monitor rather than the dual setup.

However, if your computer is in your bedroom and you author/encode DVDs overnight then you'll have a problem. The display cannot be turned off unless it is unplugged. This also means unplugging your MBP if you're using the power cord from the display. Setting the display on its dimmest setting doesn't turn off the screen. The old Apple Cinema Displays all have an on/off button on side, which this display does not.

So until Apple addresses this issue, don't plan on running your computer overnight in the same room that you sleep.

Short cable is a problem for Mac Pro users

    Written by SH from Redfern

    Jul 13, 2009

This is a stunning display but like some of the other reviewers I believe the short cable is a real problem. I am aware that Apple designed this screen for the laptops but it is obviously intended for the Mac Pro as well. I was about to buy 2 of these to run with a new Mac Pro (with optional second video card to run it) but the short cable means the second display can not be plugged in to the Mac Pro. Lucky I checked the length in the store before picking them up. The screen needs a longer cable or a mini display port extension as an option. Please come up with an alternative soon.

Apple Monitor at its best - but...

    Written by DP from INDIANAPOLIS

    Jul 11, 2009

I have used this monitor since it has been released. It is an outstanding piece of hardware and is great when mated to the MacBook Pro. The screen is incredible and the integrated camera and speakers de-clutter the the desk. The cord length inhibits your flexibility as to monitor and laptop placement. Not a deal breaker, but it reduces possible functionality... Apple needs a longer cord to use with the Mac Pro.

Beautiful display but why a short cord?

    Written by JT from Calgary

    Jul 7, 2009

I love my new display. It looks amazing and the image quality is superb. But I really really am disappointed it has such a short cord. I have to put my display in a location on my desk where I don't want it to be. It's very annoying. I don't understand why Apple would do this. They should GIVE me an extension for the $1000 I spent on this. I also wish I could have a matte finish display. The glossy look can also get annoying because I have windows behind me.

Cord Length a very serious issue...

    Written by JR from Victoria

    Jul 4, 2009

Apple boasts that you can connect up to eight Apple Displays to the Mac Pro, but what they don't tell you is that you can't position them in any decent viewing place as the cables on these monitors are tooo bloody short, and non extendable (save for hacking off the end and making your own extensions...) how non-apple of a thing to do.
    Terribly disappointed, terribly.

The Best Monitor I Have Seen or Used

    Written by OD from Somerville

    Jul 4, 2009

I have purchased the display after some hesitation and do not regret my decision in any way. It is a great display - bright and crisp. The speakers are also very good. They produce a very clear sound and can be reasonably loud. There is also no issue with glare even in a very well lit room. Glare can be a problem only if you are determined to see it. The display also has not a single dead pixel! Great job, Apple, once again.
