Confucius says: Researching a product BEFORE buying leads to satisfaction!

    Written by ES from Fairport

This is an excellent product that performs quite well if you understand its intended purpose. I use it in conjunction with a 22" HP w2207h LCD monitor via DVI to HDMI cable. I have no complaints. Any limitations are a result of the way Mini DisplayPort has to "emulate" a legacy DVI signal or the monitor itself, not the actual adapter.

It appears that some people are being mislead into leaving bad reviews, but in the end, User Error is to blame. To clarify, this is a SINGLE Link DVI adapter, intended to be used in conjunction with a SINGLE external monitor. Apple also sells a "Mini DisplayPort to DUAL-LINK DVI" adapter if you need to run, you guessed it, dual monitors!

That said, if you purchase a SINGLE-link adapter intending to run DUAL monitors, you'll be disappointment and logically assume it's because your MacBook Pro is vastly inferior to your neighbor's Vista laptop, not because you purchased the wrong item!

    Great

    Written by DS from Minneapolis

It's hard to understate the value of having all the connectors on the same cord -- it's just so much easier to connect and un-connect everything. Also, the cord is very flexible, unlike the high-quality DVI cord on my previous monitor. This makes it easier to place my MacBook where I want it.

The screen itself is very high quality, the speakers are great, and it's nice to have the iSight camera. I don't think any reasonable person could complain about the monitor's quality.

It's nice to have usb connectors on the back, but more would have been better.

    Beautiful but.....

    Written by MA from Troy

    Feb 22, 2009

the display is gorgeous. the best looking display on the market. and the size is just perfect. but its given me nothing but trouble. lots of issues with very subtle color shifting from the blue spectrum to red. its hard to explain. if you want to know more, visit the forum for this particular display and you'll see the large number of complaints. i've already had it replaced once. but its so beautiful, that i had to accept the replacement. there is absolutely no other display that is this perfect looking. and of course i'm loyal to apple products.

And the display leaves much to be desired. There are only 3 USB ports on the back, and that's it! Other displays at a fraction of the cost and same size, although not LED technology, have HDMI as well as a ton of other connectivity options. I don't understand Apple. I don't get why they wouldn't go all out on this display. its extremely perplexing to me.

and i'm hoping the next generation mac pro uses the display port. if you don't already know, only the newer macbooks and macbook pros can be used with this display. i'll tell you what i fear. i fear that apple will release a new line of displays soon with all the bells and whistles that are specifically for a mac pro. i'll be really disappointed if they do that.

    Absolutely Beautiful!

This is truly a beauty and a very good price in the LED back-lit category. I love the fact that it charges your laptop so that I can carry my power supply around with me and never worry about forgetting it at home.

Simply stunning colors and very crisp. This is certainly the way of the future. Please go to an Apple Store and check it out before buying to truly appreciate it.

Didn't Work With Our ProTools Mac Workstation

    Written by ST from Keaau

    Feb 19, 2009

We bought two of these to upgrade our ProTools workstation late-model G5 from older 17" displays. Unfortunately, we had to return them both to Apple and get our money back, beacuse, what do you know, but they don't work with anything other than the brand new MacBooks, MacBook Airs, and MacBook Pros - the ones that have the new Mini DisplayPort connector.

It was a sad day for us, and we think that this product should be at least backward compatible with other desktop Mac hardware that has come out of late. Therefore, we give the product 2 stars. There is no other option for us to purchase an Apple display other than the 30" which is not what we wanted. We had to give our money to Dell instead (yuk!).

We are currently using a 2008 version of the now-defunct 23" Cinema Display with our 24" late-2008 iMac and it works wonderfully to have the extended desktop and dual displays. The new 24" display doesn't even do what its predecessor - the 23" - can do. Let's hope for a revision to the 24" line.

Works Perfectly with Macbook Pro (late 2008)

    Written by WB from Cloverdale

    Feb 18, 2009

Just plug it in and everything works.

You get three USB ports so you can plug in your Time Machine HDD and iPhone/iPod dock once and then forget them.

This monitor is an add-on for the Macbook Pro (late 2008), not a universal 24" monitor.

I would have given this 5 stars if it had an HDMI port.

    waste of money

Written by LC from elk grove

    Feb 17, 2009

Okay, first of all, I had purchased a $200 display at Best buy, and connected it to my MB and it looked just fine.
Then I was thinking about how great the MB would look on a display thats MEANT for it. SO i purchased this at an apple store, and took it back almost immediately. It was the same, if not worse for more than 3X the price.

The good things about it is it charged my laptop as well as convenience to the camera and USB port. Thats about it.

The bad thing is it is pricy, and it looks just as same as a cheaper display that you can get at best buy, and all you have to do is by a cheap $30 Mini Dispay port adapter.

    Hope this helps.

    Nice Display

    Written by MJ from Independence

Honestly the only reason this item is only getting four stars is because of the price, but it does have a microphone, camera, and speakers built in. The way that this system works together with the Macbook is simply great. I leave my home with just my laptop arrive at the office and it's simply plug and play. The monitor charges the MacBook and becomes a usb hub. The best part is the ability to run dual monitor mode. I use a lot of spread sheets that I have to compare to each other so the dual mode is very helpful. The speakers are very good but by far are not BOSE. If you like the fact of being able to come in a get to work, well this monitor is for you. If you are thinking about getting it for plain day to day use I would suggest against it.

Pros: Very nice display even you set it at 50% brightness. Perfect match for the new line of Macbooks. I have no problem running all my applications using this display and my 2.4, 2GB macbook. Highly recommended.

Cons: No mic & headphone jacks.

Wonderful Display (if you can get over the limited compatibility)

Written by AJ from Wasaga Beach

    Feb 14, 2009

It took several visits to the Apple store to get comfortable with the idea of making this purchase. To drop a cool grand on a display that can only be connected at this point (Feb 09) to the new Mac Books is a difficult notion to get ones head around. There are several other excellent options out there, the Dell 2408wfp was also on my list. The Dell has more connection options than you could possibly make use of, has very good image quality, an integrated card reader, several USB ports and so on. The Dell is also at least $300 cheaper. The Apple LED on the other had has only mini display port and 3 USB ports.

So why did I go with this display? Simply put the image quality is incredible. Some will suggest this display can't be considered colour accurate, and that it is not suitable for photographers etc. I'm sure this may apply to true professionals, but as a hobby photographer, the colour accuracy suits my needs extremely well. Despite rumors to the contrary, I did not have any trouble calibrating this display with my Spyder2 Pro.

The LED back light is wonderful and I love the glossy screen. I work in a North facing room, and I keep the lights low in the evening. I have not experienced any issues with glare, non, what so ever. The integrated USB, Magsafe, iSight camera and mini display port adapters make this the perfect accessory for the Mac Book. The integrated speakers are decent too, not great but acceptable. I suspect the new models of the i Mac, Mac Mini and Pro will also be able to use this display when they are released.

So in summary, yes this is a very expensive display compared to some of the competition, but if you have the cash I highly recommend this product. It really is awesome.

Apple, if your looking for an opinion, add a few more USB ports, drop the price some and release adapters for older Mac Books.

Very nice but hard to see the value

    Written by MS from Brooklyn

    Feb 14, 2009

I think this is an awesome display as far as styling and quality go but I see a few flaws.

    - Mac Mini-DP does not play sound (was hoping to convert to HDMI and watch on TV, cant)
    - Not high resolution (17" MBP runs same res as 24" cinema)
    - Almost $1000 after tax
    - Not much noticeable color improvement over Mac's current LED displays.
    - Speakers do not compensate for the price

This will probably get much improvement in the next refresh.

    Ambiguously Specialized Yet ...

    Written by IC from Washington

    Feb 13, 2009

The name of this product, Apple LED Cinema Display, offers no indication that it's specialized for laptops with a Mini DisplayPort. We purchased it with a Mac Pro, assuming that it was the newest rev of a product that's historically been compatible with standard DVI ports.

There is no adapter available to port Mini DiplayPort to DVI.
There is no Mini DisplayPort expansion card for the Mac Pro through this vendor. (I dunno bout the others.)

We will be sending it back, and wondering why the 23" is no longer available for our new Mac Pro, and other DVI-ported machines, and annoyed about the resulting downtime for our enduser.
