AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n and AirTunes
Great in theory, poor execution
Written by AL from Portland

The idea behind this lil' gadget is great. I got an Airport Express purely as a way to stream iTunes music across my living room from a Sony laptop to our stereo, and didn't really need any other features. Despite having all the latest downloads and updates, and replacing the unit, it never worked for more than 2 minutes without stuttering, intermittently losing connection, and then out-right failing, never again to be recognized without hard rebooting the Airport. BTW, this is NOT a Windows issue, as many a Macbook user has the same issues.

Outshines Other Routers
Written by RG from HAMMOND

I upgraded to the Express Base Station from a Linksys Wireless-N router and have been impressed since! The Express is much faster, reliable, and set up was a snap. It literally took about 7 minutes from start to finish. I can't say that about the Linksys. It has been connected for several days and I have yet to have a dropped Internet connection. However, I recommend using the Express only if you have a Mac as both the hardware and software are meant to complement one another.

The title of my review tells it all. I used the AirPort Express to extend my home network via a 1TB-Time Capsule. Coverage in my home is excellent in all areas. Set-up was simple. Money very well spent. Good job Apple.

failed after 10 months -hassle to deal with
Written by RB from Vero Beach
Nov 30, 2009
Was nice when it worked but every couple months I would have to go through Airport Utility setup to get it to play my music from itunes on remote speakers. Very un-Apple like instability issues. Finally stopped working for good today and I spent a couple hours trying every fix I could find on various forums. Should be covered under warranty but can't reach a human at Apple. Will be easier to just plug my ipod into the powered speakers (by the way, must use powered speakers with airport express) that used to plug into the airport express.

AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n and AirTunes
works most of the time
Written by WS from COLORADO SPRINGS
Nov 30, 2009
I bought three of these and connected to my old air port extreme it worked most of the time but then started stopping in the middle of streaming music from my Mac which is the main reason I bought it. So i bought a new airport extreme thinking that the range was an issue. improved my speed on the Mac but did not fix the streaming problem to the the airport expresses. it is an intermitant problem that Apple should really look into. so far i have seen nothing on line to reflect that they have. I have the latest firm ware downloads and though the system is great when it works it is still annoying when it cuts out for no good reason. I have one hooked up to my home theater system 40feet away from the Airport extreme. one connected to my upstairs system and one in the kitchen next to the Mac simply acting as a range extender. super about 90% of the time

Excellent while it worked

This is a great product while it lasted. Ideal for travel, home wireless networking. Music streaming to speakers and WiFi was flawless. However, it simply died after about 2.5 years, after warranty had expired of course. Only two stars, since one would expect something with this price tag to work bit longer. I miss having AirPort Express...

Bad reviews are true! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!
Written by OO from Evergem

I decided to buy this product after reading some bad reviews (huge mistake) because I though they were not representing the real quality of the brand. However, it is true that this is not a good product. I bought it to combine it with my time capsule for the only purpose of streaming music wirelessly. Unfortunately for me, this product is a joke since music constantly cut off for no reasons. No matter how close or far the airport express is from the source of your wireless internet, the music suddenly interrupts. And it is also unbelievable that every time I start the microwave in the kitchen the music starts to cut off as well. This product is simply a joke with this problem being well documented by several other reviewers. Please note that I have not use the airport express to create a wireless network or to setup a printer, I only used it for the wireless music capability. I bought this product 3 weeks ago and it is back at the customer service department from where I bought it since I live in Europe and you cannot just return the product and get a refund as it happens in the US. Stay away, save a bit more money and get yourself a descent wireless music bridge system from other brands that have excellent reviews (i.e. logitech, etc).

Rarely Works
Written by DA from Henderson
Nov 28, 2009
One of the things I love about Apple is that their products just work, but not in this case. Bought this to add speakers to my computer. Works every once in a great while. I even moved it right next to my Apple Airport Wireless Router but it can't ever locate it. (everything else wireless around my house works fine, so it's not the wireless connection) Even attempted to reinstall, but it only comes back with "unable to locate wireless device". Big waste of money.

great for my steaming music

I was able to eliminate my 5 CD changer and now exclusively play all music through the Airport express from iTunes... My only complaint is occasionally I get a temporary interruption of music. but only for a few seconds and it is very sporadic. My Express is one of the earliest versions maybe 3 years old(?). I am now working on playing my Sirius Radio through this system.

Excellent Product

Recently bought this product to replace my old wireless router. It is fast, easy to set up, and takes up very little space. The effective range of this product is much greater than the router it is replacing, and there is no lag between opening my laptop and internet connectivity (I have a MacBook). I was experiencing a wait of 2-3 minutes with my old router. I highly recommend this product.

It only took me 5 minutes from opening the box to have my existing network extended and my printer port up and ready to go. Great, easy to use product. Nine major apple products in my house and I haven't been disappointed with one of them.

Outstanding device and a must if you have a large home with wireless!

This is an outstanding product. I have a Time Capsule and the wireless works great but it is on the opposite side of my house from one of the main areas were I use my MacBook Pro. I set up the AirPort to extend my Time Capsule wireless network (check the "extend network" on the Time Capsule also) and it put my network signal in that area at top strength!
I now have another one and plugged my printer directly into it and now my entire network shares that printer using the wireless AirPort!
Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!41 of 48 people found this useful

We bought this yesterday with the Airport Extreme Base Station, and it worked flawlessly. Today i bought another one to hook up to our surround sound, so now we have the base station, and 2 expreses that act as extenders!

Good to a point
Written by CO from Goodyear

The airport express worked fabulously for a few months and then it began to get unreliable. I will be on my laptop using the internet and BLAM! My internet shuts down. Not only that, but my airport shows that there is nothing wrong. THe green light is on, but my internet is gone. So i have to crawl through all of the wires under my desktop computer to unplug and replug the airport in until the green light finally turns on. This usually takes about twenty minutes.
Until this started happening it worked great and was reliable. Now... not so much.
Be carful when buying.10 of 16 people found this useful

At first to me it was a little confusing to set up but once i figured it out, it works like its suppose to. Other than my iMac, I have my macbook pro and my itouch running out of it with no problems. The internet works great. I bought two other wireless routers in the past with no luck with it working properly but this one works great.

Perfect for College Dorms
Written by DW from Hillsborough
Nov 16, 2009
This is the perfect router for college students with many wireless devices. The Airport Express delivers exactly as promised with grab-and-go convenience. Currently, my roommate and I have two laptops, an ipod touch, iphone, printer, and speakers running off of this router, and it performs beautifully. If a wireless only router fulfills your needs, then this is the right one for you! It's even compact enough to take with me to a friend's room if we want to share their wired connection.
Technical Notes: This is a wireless-only router. If you need more than one ethernet port, then consider the Airport Extreme. The only sound that can be played through speakers connected to this router is through "Airtunes" within iTunes, and by default this is not password protected, so your neighbors can play their music through your speakers (I found this out the hard way).
IMPORTANT FOR WINDOWS USERS! If you want to print to a printer that is connected to this router, you must download Bonjour for Windows.23 of 25 people found this useful

iTunes dropouts
Written by MV from Coupeville
Nov 15, 2009
Works OK as a compact router. But I bought it because it also supposedly could receive streamed music from iTunes. And it does. Some of the time.
Search Apple discussions for iTunes dropouts. It is a problem that has affected hundreds of Express users for a long time, and Apple has done nothing about it. Ridiculous. If I am going to by an overpriced piece of technology because it has extra features, those extra features better work.41 of 53 people found this useful

Just finished the set-up of the Airport Express and did it sitting in my La-Z-Boy!!! It was all done wirelessly and it took less than 10 minutes! I tried a Linksys router and had nothing but grief so took it back and decided to go with an Apple product. We have a MacBook Pro so it made sense. It works beautiful and internet is fast. I don't know why I didn't avoid the hassle and buy this in the first place!
