Went dead before completing a year!

Written by KA from new york

    Oct 10, 2009

This product needs to have an extensive quality of control work, it went dead before completing its first year, not to mention dropouts of signal when transmitting music through AirTunes.

One sentence, stay away from this, at least until it gets better.

ps: I'm a AEBS (ndraft) (the bigger model) user and its heaven! best WiFi router I've ever purchased.

    I'm getting my money back

    Written by AD from Delta

    Oct 9, 2009

despite all the "problems" AE seemed to have documented online on reviews, forums, etc., i went on and bought the thing having grand faith in apple. worked great, but a week later, it constantly drops the signal if its not unbearably slow. i have a macbook 5.1 on OSX 10.5.8 and a new generation ps3 on the network.

here's the strange thing: the signal dropout from my mac doesn't affect the ps3!! ps3's just fine. you'd think its the other way round. no matter what i've tried, the problem wont go away. such great potential but i'm fed up, money back please. apple needs to work on their stuff before putting it out. not the cheapest either. NEXT!! d-link here i come

    Good (solid) product, however....

    Written by CW from Victoria

    Oct 5, 2009

I am giving 5/5 stars conditionally for this product.
95% of the time there have been few if any problems with this router, however the week before last week, when I did my upgrade to Snow Leopard and my firmware for the the Airport Express Base Station became totally corrupted needed to be reset. T
he Airport settings turned off the USB and LAN.
Not much in the way of complaints. As I said it is a pretty good product.

    wireless connection

Written by JH from Mount Pleasant

Do not buy if there are more than one wireless network within range of dwelling. I can't setup a wireless network in my house because my MacBook notices too many other wireless networks to connect to. The signal isn't strong enough from Airport Express. I have even tried to change channels to 5Mhz and to change to a different room. I have had no luck with either method. Worked great in my last home. I have had nothing buy problems in my new house.

    Connection problems and dropouts...

    Written by ZH

    Oct 4, 2009

As all the other users I did find this product a great thing until I installed it. There are far too many drop outs and connection problems. The funny part is that it seems that nobody have had any response from Apple on this subject, thus thousands of complains on the Internet and on Apples official forum sites. Could a good guess be that Apple has discovered it to be a hardware problem that of course is unfixable unless replacing all sold airports!? My recommendation on this product: don't by it until Apple has made a statement on the issue and a fix for it. You wouldn’t run on a bike with at flat tire either!?
Fix the problem and the product would be worth all 5 stars!

    Sorry for my bad English.

Stay away from this if you love music

Written by EP from Richmond Hill

This is pure garbage, music drops all the time, tried everything, everything! If you are buying this to wireless stream music then do yourself a favor and wait for a new device cause this will drive you insane when your favorite songs drop every 20 seconds. Don't listen to all the hype here they are apple sheep, there are thousands of complaints of music dropping on this device, call tech support and they are very familiar with this problem, they will tell you it's interference, well DUH don't you idiots think in this modern day of technology the neighbors also have wireless devices at home, what a stupid excuse for a poor design.

    worst mac accesory ever!

    Written by DV from Miami

    Oct 2, 2009

Airport Express base station is the worst accessory ever. The reach in very limited, so temperamental (only works when he wants), so unstable that after a year of having it whit me, I’m so tired of trying to make it work. If you are having a party in your house, it would make you angry. Continuously it will stop, because of the floor vibrations, because of some one moving the laptop… and so on.

    Mediocre at best

Written by MC from Saddle Brook

Wireless printing seems to work well once you acquire a compatible printer. The wireless music, however, is mediocre AT BEST. I have a private, reliable internet connection and my laptop sits so close to the thing that the wireless is pointless. I would need a 2 foot cord. There's nothing between the two to interfere and the music cuts in and out constantly. Just buy a plain old wireless router and don't pay Apple money for this.

DO NOT BUY IF YOU'RE LOOKING TO STREAM MUSIC

Written by DA from Granada Hills

    Oct 1, 2009

I have two of these, the old 802.11g model, and this new 802.11n version. I bought the new one because the experience with the old one was so wonderful. I bought it for its one advertised purpose that interested me: a cheap and easy way to extend my iTunes music and podcasts to remote speakers in another room. With iTunes version 7 and earlier, it worked wonderfully, so I had no reason not to get a second one when the n model came out. Sadly, ever since iTunes version 8 and 9 came out, you cannot stream music to these things without constant stuttering of the music. Every three to four minutes, you'll get a 3-5 second drop-out of the audio. Extremely annoying. There are hundreds (or more) complaints of this in the Apple forums for over year, but no fix yet.

    Brilliant Divice But Slightly Lacking

    Written by JX from Chestermere

    Oct 1, 2009

I bought the AirPort Express today with great excitement and anticipation. I was overjoyed having the ability to play my music wirelessly through my amp and surround speakers from anywhere in the home from my Mac. However when came to watching movies (I've connected my Mac to my HD TV using a DVI to HDMI cable) the sound would only play as normal through the Mac speakers. I was shocked! I wanted to hear my movies wirelessly through my surround speakers. Even movies in my iTunes library would not play through the Express! I have to say I was sorely disappointed.

Overall this is a brilliant little device. Giving you freedom by having the ability to be used as a wireless router for net use, to play music and print documents wirelessly from anywhere in the home. It would be great, though, if the AirPort Express was not designed to solely play your iTunes music but to wirelessly transfer any sound from your Mac, as in the case of using an RCA or optical cable from your Mac to your stereo or surround system. If Mr Jobs were able to accomplish this little feat the AirPort Express would deserve an above 10 star rating!

Don't buy it for the AirTunes feature

    Written by MC from Toronto

    Sep 30, 2009

I bought it because of the airtunes feature... very, very disappointed!!

Don't believe only in what I'm saying here, go and Google "airtunes dropouts" or "itunes dropouts" and you will see how many people are unhappy about this.

The worst, is an old problem that Apple is not able to fix.

About the "mobile" wireless network function, I don't know, I don't use it like that.

Very disappointed!! I miss my 100 bucks!

    Frustrating

Written by PD from Pembroke Pines

This worked beautifully the first day, day two, Internet goes on and off all the time, I called apple tech support 1000 times and there is something about interference, I relocated it everywhere and I changed the channels many times but the problem persisted. Its a good idea, easy set up, a good concept, but doesn't work. I kept it for the speakers but i think its to expensive to be used just for that.

Music streaming has short stutters every minute or so when using the latest itunes. Works great with itunes 7, but the latest itunes are required to sync iphones. Would be a great product if Apple fixed the microstutters. Stutters possibly originate due to itunes not syncing the music stream to the soundcard clock...

This would get 5 stars if it worked, but it doesn't. Constant drop-outs in music when streaming from iTunes 8 or iTunes 9. Well documented problem, but no well documented solution. If you happen to still be on iTunes 7 however, it works fine

    Works as Advertised

    Written by AH from Mequon

I'm very pleased with my new Airport Express with 802.11n

My primary reason for buying this product was to be able to stream my iTunes music to my living room stereo. Since my iTunes collection lives on a Vista PC, and my wireless router is a Linksys Wire G setup - I was prepared for a few wrinkles in the installation.

Setup took about ten minutes. One (minor) complaint is that the included documentation didn't fully explain the process of installing and correctly configuring the Airport Utility to allow iTunes to stream music to the Airport Express. A little more detail in the installation manual would have been helpful there.

Since the network I'm running is Wireless G, I suspect I'm not getting the full benefits of the latest 802.11n technology. I do notice the occasional dropping of the wireless signal, although this may be improved by tweaking the location of my wireless router, the Airport Express, and the antenna of my PC. I'm also using my iPod Touch as a remote control, which may be placing additional load on the network.

I'd have paid $99 for the simple ability to stream iTunes music to my living room stereo. The additional capabilities f the AirPort Express (like the ability to create a wireless network "on the road", or create a wireless printer location) are simply extra benefits.

WHAT AN ABSOLUTE PIECE OF JUNK - STAY FAR, FAR AWAY

Written by TM from SANTA MONICA

Tried to rate this ZERO stars but it doesn't seem to be an option. Purchasing this has been the worst experience in my 20+ year relationship with Apple Products. The set-up is designed to be simple, but when things go wrong, it is SOOOOOOO frustrating - bordering on infuriating - to troubleshoot, that it makes it completely not worth the purchase. I've been through 3 of these and can't get one of them to work. Have downloaded all the drivers & updates, have researched it ad nauseum, and still can't figure out what is not working. Terrible, terrible, terrible waste of time. :(

keeps rebooting; audio/video out of sync

Written by MB from Mountain View

    Sep 26, 2009

When I first plugged it in, I got a green light, but then it switched to blinking amber. After two minutes waiting, I had to pull it from the power strip a couple of times before it would finally boot up. It stayed up for all of three minutes. Then, it rebooted. It would come up, then reboot a few minutes later. The few tips I got from RTFM didn't help.

During the few minutes it was working, I tried it out on various media in iTunes. There is a 2-3 second delay, which is OK for pure audio, but really annoying when trying to watch a video.

I'm taking this back. Shoddy product.

    pure perfection

    Written by DH from Aurora

This device is the definition of; "elegant simplicity"
So much so that I had to buy a second one to travel with me.
My deployment of the AirPort Express is in a heterogeneous network with multiple Macs, PCs, gaming systems and iphones. All of these are tied together with an Apple Time Capsule. The Airport Express was added to the existing network to extend the range and bring a faster (wireless N) connection to an PS3.
It took no more than 5 minutes to set it up and get it working. Unbelievable! The airport utility instantly saw the AirPort Express and populated it the list of wireless devices. Click it and then click setup, it's that simple.
I've used my second one for travel. While you do have to change the configuration from time to time the airport utility on my PC laptop from work makes it simple. Within minutes my hotel room is wireless. I've also used it in conference rooms where there is only a wired connection.
    Fantastic product.

    Now Safari Works!

Written by WW from New Orleans

    Sep 24, 2009

My Safari timed out over and over again! I would always have to run a network diagnostic check and it would reconnect. I contacted Apple Care to see what the problem was and they told me that my 2Wire modem was not up to Apple's "standards" and suggested that I got AirPort and bypass the modem. I did and I am in love with it! Now I have to see if my Back 2 My Mac Feature works!

Thanks Apple for making me spend hundreds of dollars more than the cost of the computer with accessories and stuff!
