Outdated

Support AVCHD? Not really.
a) The program crashes when I try to capture video AVCHD from my camera; I had to buy a second program just to import the video into my computer.
b) No support for 5.1 surround
c) No support for 1920x1080; 1440 is the best it can do.226 of 329 people found this useful

Final Cut Express 4.0
Poor AVCHD support
Written by DB from West Chester

As a previous reviewer wrote. I should have purchased Vegas as well. Instead of import my camera's (hf10) true 1920x1080 AVCHD footage, it converts it to an anamorphic 1440x1080. Because of the impossibility of returning software, they should let people know this up front. To make a good software choice you need that info. I would have gone with Sony had I known.
Horrible work Apple.170 of 219 people found this useful

AVCHD frame rate problems...
Written by CP from Amherstview

I bought this because it should work with my consumer level AVCHD HV20 or HF10 camcorder's cool 24p frame rates right? Wrong. In order to edit and export them, you'll need to buy Final Cut Pro... which for the same price, you could buy an entire brand new computer and Sony's Vegas editing software to handle those framerates! Wow Apple. Unless they release a patch that puts FCE4 on par with other current video editors, I'd hold off on this one. Come on Apple, for $199 a video editor should be able to handle framerates of todays consumer level camcorders.

Great Tool-DVD authoring missing
Written by TB from Rome

FCE is a great tool, but I also want to present my work on a DVD player. Menu's in iDVD really look bad, because I cannot make custom menus, cannot have more than 5 menu items, the templates are lame, cannot have custom shape for video background, and it goes on and on...
Why is there no DVD StudioExpress ? Until that time I rather use the full FinalCutPro- even if I have to rent a Mac. Apple has great tools- but we also want to present our work in the best possible way- and the first thing you see on a TV is the DVD-menu.
What good is a great tool to make great video if the presentation looks bad ?

Final Cut Express 4.0
not compatible with fcp studio2

Is not possible to share projects with final cut studio 2. Ok, the new plugins included are nice, and the keyframing is basic but efficient. I basically bought this software to install and run in a macbook intel core2duo, thinking about to capture or start simple projects to make postproduction in another intel based mac with FCS2 later. I found frustrating when FCS2 message appears: "the project is newer to this version of software" (or something like this). Hey apple what's wrong? What do I make? Only clipping? I'm very dissapointed with them.

Looks like a nice upgrade - if only it would work with my G5 PPC!

I bought a Canon HG10 as a gift to my wife. I also bought FCE 4, but didn't notice that AVCHD OPERATION ONLY WORKS WITH AN INTEL-BASED MAC.
I have a G5 Quad (4 2.5GGz cores) which is only about 19 months old. Now I learn I can't use it and FCE4 with the Canon in HD mode.

I'm Not Sure About This...

I love Final Cut Express HD, but I am not sure if there are large benefits to upgrading to FCE 4. The changes seem very small, unlike the upgrade to the HD version. I will be very interested to hear what others think, especially those that upgrade from HD. **I will say that if you are thinking about learning FCE and don't own it already, it is an amazing program and well worth your time to learn. It is an exceptional value at $199 for a new user.
