To FIX THE SCROLL WHEEL all you have to do is turn the mouse upside down and rub the wheel vigorously on a piece of paper.

    Just Clean It

Seriously, whoever it was that wrote the review that explained to roll the ball over a sheet of paper on a firm surface... Thank you! This will work people. This mouse is awesome, just clean it. I was amazed at the uber grossness that was lurking inside of it. Roll it on the paper and it's like having a new mouse! And like the other reviewer said, stop working with messy hands, wash up. The only complaint I have is where has the right click function gone? If someone knows how to use that, please share.

Scroll Ball can be EASILY fixed

Besides the scroll ball malfunction, the mighty mouse is very useful and worth buying. The scroll ball can be easily cleaned. You just use a Lysol wipe and clean it ever-so-often while rolling the ball. After using the mouse for at least a year, that quick method has worked every single time.

Oh woe! How picky you all are!

    Addressing Complaints:
I bought my Mighty Mouse with my 20" iMac about 4 months ago. Honest to say, its a beautiful thing. Many complain of the scroll ball's failure. Well four months of my, my parent's and my sibling's use, and it still doesn't EVER get stuck, NEVER! I'm the most frequent user of it, and my hands sweat regularly, and profusely, even my scrolling finger, still no scroll ball death... One that's far less thrown around would be the touch sensitive buttons. Yes, its true you cannot click both at once. If you try, it will primary click. But it has never messed up for me. Firstly, it CANNOT click without user input, since the clicking is not touch sensitive, the choice of which button is being clicked is. Secondly, it does not fail, and can't do so, since it works on such a simple technology.

    Upsides:
Too many to mention. It looks stunning, it feels solid, the touch-sensitive buttons are cool, the 360º scroll ball is very useful, it's optical sensor is always dead-on, it glides smoothly across most, if not all surfaces...etc.

    Complaints:
Ok, i have two, this is why I gave it a four, rather than a five. !) The cord length is strange, its too short to reach behind your Mac, and its too long to be convenient with the keyboard. 2) I hold my mouse on a slight angle (most do), and it causes my index finger to sit slightly atop the right click area. If they were to fudge the sensing areas a bit, it would help.

    Very Nice

This is a great product if you are looking for something that is well designed, cool looking, and inexpensive. The mouse is very light, tracking is a breeze, and you have many options for what you want the buttons to control. However, this mouse has a mild but annoying down side. Every so often, you will barely touch the side buttons (usually by accident), and the mouse thinks that you have pressed the sides. Obviously, if you have the side buttons serving no function, this is not a problem. Other than that, the mouse is a wonderful product.

Besides bit short on the cable side, Might mouse is better than the Magic

    • Written by from Miami

The cable is extremely short. However this mouse is wired, so it's performance is better than the wireless magic mouse. It is also much lighter, so moving it around won't be much effort compared to the all glass/aluminum magic mouse.

I use a USB extension cable to plug it to my iMac, and it works great. Also got more keys than the Magic Mouse. The middle button and the side button is all customizable.

    Highly recommended.

use compressed air on scroll ball

    • Written by

11 of 17 people found this useful

This is one of the best mice I've ever used. The scroll ball does get screwed up every couple months but I find spraying some compressed air into it while pushing in and moving it around usually gets it moving again and it will last a good 2-3 years with such maintenance.

You can get these cheap from people who think the scroll ball is broken or have gone to purchase the new magic mouse; I would prefer magic mouse also except it stupidly only uses batteries.

    I love my Mighty Mouse

I've had this mouse since it first came out and I love it. I turned off the side buttons, that made it too busy for me, but the rollerball is great and the mouse works very well.

I did have to clean the roller ball once, and I used some compressed electronic cleaner I got at radio shack, but that was more than a year ago and it's worked great ever since.

Pricey but if you like rollerball scrolling this can be a great mouse.

I've had this computer and mouse for about 4 years and I love the way it scrolls up and down and I can make the words bigger or smaller. The only frustration I've had is when it gets clogged up and it won't scroll anymore. But like others have said, alcohol and a Qtip fixes it very quickly.

    High Maintenance

Excellent mouse, the side-buttons are particularly useful, but as noted the roller-ball stops functioning on a regular basis. I've found the application of cleaning alcohol will free the mechanism, but I think Apple need to be working on a version less susceptible to dust and oil accumulation.

    Sticky Rollerball Issue

    • Written by from Boonton

6 of 7 people found this useful

I've been completely satisfied with the Mighty Mouse... Loved the addition of the rollerball - Even though sometimes it gets clogged. But I'm sure we all remember the days of having to pull the hard rubber ball out of the bottom of our old Apple mouse and remove the gunk to regain the smooth precision we all ache for.... Well the tiny little rollerball just needs some TLC like it's predecessors. I find if I take a small corner of paper and slide it around where the ball meets the plastic on all sides, it removes enough of the "build up" so that it works like new again every time.

Works Great...But Cord is WAY Too Short!

    • Written by from Syracuse

Just brought a new iMac and while the system is top notch, the cord on the mouse is too short (as is the cord for the keyboard). Constantly having to pick up the mouse and work within the parameters of the short cord. On the other hand, the iMac is the best home computer I've ever owned as I am a recent convert from Windows based systems to this system and additionally I also purchased a new MacBook Pro. Don't let a short cord cause to you skip a purchase however...this is a great product!

    The best mouse. Period.

Yes scroll ball will be unreliable if you are riding in dirt and not keeping it clean.

I have two of these and am getting a third. Simple. And 4 button mouse is absolutely needed if you use your Mac for business. Expose and Spaces (need Total Spaces now for Mountian Lion). I have a Magic Mouse and do not like it - it is missing the side buttons and the 3rd mouse button.

Nothing but thumbs up on this. And the main reason I only give it the 4 stars is the fact that the scroll ball in the mouse with about 100K on it will become unreliable - so go get it fixed/cleaned...!

    It's a $45 dollar mouse, not $90.

    :)

    Great mouse, but...

This is a great mouse and I love using it. The scroll ball is really natural way to scroll through web pages and documents, BUT you will have to maintain it. It frequently collects dusk and debris as well as oil from your fingers. Best way to keep it working is to use some isopropyl alcohol and work the scroll ball. The other thing is that Apple wants $49, which seems rather steep to me. I don't remember paying that much for it 3 yrs ago.

    cleans up GREAT!

Lately, I've had increasing trouble with the track ball on my (original) three-year old mouse. After reading suggestions here, I cleaned it first with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, then with rubbing alcohol on a clean cloth. Afterwards, I rolled it around on a clean sheet of paper. Voila! It works like new! No need to spend $50 on a new device; this one is back to like-new condition!

Keep the track ball clean and its fine.

After thinking that I needed a new mouse I stumbled onto the paper technique of cleaning the track ball of my apple mighty mouse. Voila! it worked! Tried it on another mighty mouse and it too became fully functional! Just keep it clean! Oils from fingers combined with dust in the air must collect on the ball and compromise its function. Two of ours work great now, when they didn't before.

Good mouse, roller ball does not roll any more. Have had for 2 years or so. I really don't want to buy another mouse that is not going to work in a year or two! The mouse also goes on it's own sometimes? Good mouse but as good as I would expect from Apple.

its actually pretty easy to take apart and clean the ball. yes it is tedious, but it gives you something constructive to do on a boring day. once cleaned works like the day you got it. ive only had to clean it once in a couple years. it would be beneficial for apple to have come up with a better solution for the dirt issue but oh well.

Don't discard or resign yourself to not scrolling: clean it!

    • Written by from Oakland

6 of 8 people found this useful

I too had the issue with scrolling due to dirt getting in the scroll ball mechanism. My mouse stopped scrolling up, which was incredibly frustrating.

So a co-worker and I took it apart today. All you need is a swiss army knife or something similar, with a blade to pry it open and a small phillips screwdriver. We took it all apart and cleaned the contacts, put it back together (though we had to use superglue to reattach the bottom frame), and it works great now.

I think I'll try cleaning it without taking it apart in the future, somehow. And remembering to wash my hands after lunch.

But the multi-directional scroll ball is totally worth it. It really speeds up workflow. It took me a while to get used to having the whole body of the mouse for left-click/right-click... and sometimes if I don't have my hand in the exact right place, it right-clicks when I want to left-click. Otherwise, it's great.
