Pretty good, with a couple issues

    • Written by from Emeryville

It's a pretty good mouse. Everything works well. The side buttons to switch between windows is nice but sometimes too sensitive. The scroll ball is very cool. I like that you can scroll left and right as well as up and down. People say it stops working after a while, but what is actually happeneing is that the ball is dirty (like the old skool roll ball mice). You just need to push it down firmly and roll it in different directions to clean it. The hidden left and right click buttons are neat as well. All in all not too bad, you will just run into those few problems, and if you can deal with them youll be happy.

    It worked!!

    • Written by from Elkton

I was having trouble with my might mouse and went to the website to see what options I might have. I got really depressed when I saw so many posts complaining about the scrolling problem. I read all the suggestions about trying to clean with air, compressed air, edge of paper etc... then saw the post about rubbing with alcohol... I tried witch hazel ( contains alcohol) and lo and behold after several tries the scrolling returned!! So now I still like the mouse! I used to clean other track balls regularly with alcohol.. granted it was easier since it was removable.. but the same cleaning principle applies.

One of the best mice ever!

    • Written by from Hatboro

This mouse is pretty nifty in that there are no gaps for dirt to get trapped in.

With my other mice (before I switched to the Mac), I always had to clean it.

To clean the outer surface of this mouse, unplug it, then wipe with a dry cotton cloth damped with alcohol.

When the ball stops scrolling, cleaning it is very easy:

    1. Unplug it
    2. Wet a cotton swab with water
    3. With the mighty mouse upside-down, wipe the ball with the cotton swab
    4. Turn the ball and repeat until you have removed all dirt and hair
    5. With the might mouse still upside-down, dry it by rubbing it on a paper towel
    6. Plug it back in - all fixed

This is without a doubt a great mouse!

Fix the scrollball by blowing the mouse.

    • Written by from Naperville

I really like this mouse. I have had the same problem with the scroll ball not working. To fix it all you have to do is put your lips on the mouse and blow into the scrollball hole. Works for me everytime.

4 stars out of 5 because of having to blow the mouse.

    scroll ball problems

    • Written by from PUEBLO

This is my second mouse since I purchased my computer about a year ago. When the scroll ball on this one quit functioning, I just sprayed it with electronic cleaner, both on the ball and on the bottom and it began to function properly immediately. No fuss, no residue. Apple should sell this type of product.

awesome mouse that needs frequent cleaning

    • Written by from Arlington

I love this mouse. The scroll button is a feature that I can't live without...which is why I was so upset when it stopped working. Then I sprayed all-purpose cleaner on a paper towel and rubbed it around on the scroll button and it started working immediately. Phew! I hope this mouse lasts a long time because I love it and it's expensive so I don't want to have to replace it.

    Easy to Restore Scroll Function

    • Written by

As mentioned in other reviews the scroll ball does have a tendency to gum up and fail. After running into the same problem, I simply sprayed some cleaning solution on a paper towel and rubbed the scroll ball around. It immediately restored the full function to it. On the whole a great product with a flaw that's easy to correct.

    Almost Great

As a Pro Tools user I can't live without the horizontal scroll wheel. It is a great feature and is worth the price. However, I have to clean the scroll wheel once a week to keep it working. Otherwise it's the best mouse I've ever used,

    It's a great mouse

    • Written by from Greensburg

I have two of these, and four friends have one as well. The roller ball does get gunked up and stops moving, but a few really quick back and fourth movements on the ball while the mouse is upside down always fixes it for me and my friends. And I usually have lunch at my desk, so there is plenty of opportunities for the ball to get mucked up.

Scrolling sideways is awesome. The side buttons as the app switcher saves me a fair amount of time. Sorry to see some people have trouble with this mouse, it has been great for me.

    easy fix.

    • Written by from Long Beach

Okay, so my mouse's trackball stopped working and I pretty determined to buy a new one, that wasn't an apple brand.
But then I went to see what everyone else's problem was, and they had the same. Grease in the trackball, malfunctions, and what not.
But after taking the advice of 'printer paper, roll mouse up and down and all around for 60 seconds' and the 'rubbing alcohol wiping'.
Just try those before you give up.

    Keep your hands clean!!!!

    • Written by from Rock City Falls

I have experience with 3 of these. We have two at my job (electronic prepress dept. for a commercial printer) and one I use at my house. I love this mouse. All 3 of these mice are over 2 years old and they all still work great. I have disabled the side buttons because I find that I activate them accidentally when I don't mean to, but that is the only real issue I've had and I never really gave myself time to get used to it and I don't really need them. The two button areas and scroll ball on top are enough for my use. As for the scroll ball. There have been a couple of instances when it had some trouble scrolling on one of the three mice I use, but simply spinning it around for a few seconds in all directions fixed it immediately. I have never had to spray air into any part of these mice for any reason. So I am inclined to agree with the other reviewer who suggested that the users who are having issues within a month and repeatedly thereafter simply keep their hands clean! I think this is a good rule of thumb with all electronics. I will admit that it would have been nice if apple included an easy way to open and clean the scroll ball. That being said, two of these mice have been used for an average of 45 hours per week for the past two years and still work as good as new, and the third has been used an average of 5 hours per week with no issues at all, so that is all I have to say about that. This is a great product!

About a year now and it still works great

    • Written by from Roy

Despite all the reviews here that say that this mouse has so many problems, I have used this mouse for over 8 hours a day, every weekday for almost a year now and I absolutely love it. I am surprised to hear other reviews that rate it so poorly. The scroll ball is an excellent concept and I'm sure Apple will continually improve upon it.

It's not as bad as it's made out to be!

    • Written by from Cupertino

After using this for a couple months now, I decided to throw in my two cents.
I have several mice I use regularly, so this doesn't always get used 10 hours a day. I also am fairly obsessed with hygiene, so I am not surprised it hasn't clogged yet. That being said, I can see how this could happen, given the design. Time will tell.
Functionally, I have my likes and dislikes. One, it isn't ergonomic, but it is supposedly stylish. It's plastic, and doesn't feel attractive in hand. The size is a bit large for my hands, this wouldn't be so bad if it was ergonomic. I am also wishing I had got the wireless version, but didn't want to commit.
I can't find any other gripes, so here are some positives. The scroll wheel, though small, works great for me. I like how finely it can be controlled or accelerated rapidly. Having the ability to scroll right and left is also indispensable. The squeeze buttons work, but are better used infrequently. Finally, the hotly debated touch sensitive top shell. I have discovered it can actually be used just like the old one button mouse with both fingers on the top. What it can't do is right click, but all you have to do is just barely lift your left finger. It is not nearly as annoying as it is made out to be.
In conclusion, I enjoy using this mouse most of the time. However, I am going to add a blue tooth mouse to my collection. And it isn't going to be a might mouse or a logitech. Ultimately, the size and lack of ergonomics are requiring me to make this a part time use device. I enjoy using it, but it's not great. If my scroll ball clogs, I will only drop my rating one star. If your computer came with this that's fine, but if you are shopping for a mouse at least get the wireless version.

Love it, if only a little troublesome...

    • Written by

I love it. It doesn't clog with dirt like the old roller ball mouses. The buttons work well. The only problem is the scroller. It gets clogged but only if it is used a long time in a dusty area or used with dirty or wet hands. All in all, a great product and very much worth getting if you have a laptop and get annoyed with the stupid pad. A 4.5 rating.

This is a pretty good piece of hardware! feels comfortable with my hand, its very responsive, and the scroll ball has yet to fail me!

I don't know what all these people are mad about. The mouse is awesome! But it is kind of annoying to click the right button and for those of us that play WoW and such, which is why it gets a 4 instead of a 5.

    great overall mouse

    • Written by from Corona

I bought the mighty mouse when it first came out and I am still using that same one to this day. I believe it is a far superior over the one button mouse before it.

Like others have said before, the scroll ball will get dirty but think about it, its a rubber ball, of course it will get dirty if dirty fingers touch it.

The only problem that I have ever had with it was that sometimes when i scroll up or down a page with the scroll ball, it would scroll too quickly thus fast forwarding me up or down a page, though this has not happened in a long time. This is the only reason I gave the mouse 4 stars, otherwise, it is great product.

    Flawless mouse, but short cord

    • Written by from Hamilton

I've been using this mouse since I purchased my iMac in October and it still works like new. I haven't had to clean the scroll ball once, but then again, I'm a chronic hand-washer. Right/left clicking works flawlessly as well. My only complaint is the very (ridiculously) short cord. I'm forced to use the mouse directly under my computer, which is quite frustrating and uncomfortable given the design of my desk.
