    Great Product, 1 Major Flaw

    • Written by from Highlands Ranch

I really do love this mouse, it's a fantastic piece of innovative technology and greatly impressed me when I first starting using it. Sadly as mentioned by many other reviewers, the product becomes absolutely useless once dirt gets under the scroll ball. I've cleaned mine over and over again, on a few occasions I've been able to bring it back, but sadly now it sits on my desk broken. If it weren't for this issue, I would be singing its praises and telling you to buy this, but unfortunately I can't. The issue with the scroll ball, and no way to open the device up to properly clean it out makes this simply a waste of money.

Utter failure in execution of a great idea.

    • Written by from Brooklyn

This would be the best mouse I've ever used, but the scroll ball problem everyone mentions is unavoidable and is exasperating. When the mouse works, it is phenomenally efficient. When the scroll ball stops—and it will—you will want to murder someone.

None of the cleaning solutions work reliably. All are a nuisance. Apple not only guaranteed problems by using a mechanical scroll ball, but they guaranteed a hellish time for anyone trying to fix the problems, by GLUING the assembly shut. Jesus, what were they thinking.

I tried the Magic mouse, as an alternative and wanted to love it. Unfortunately I find it borderline unuseable. It's great for casual use, web surfiing etc,, but lacks precision for serious work and it frequently flps out when your hand brushes near it by mistake.

I'm hoping Magic Mouse 2.0 (if such a thing is coming) solves these problems, because all the other solutions on the market are frustrating.

Come on Apple. Please attend to these not so minor details with your engineering might.

    Terrible product

    • Written by from Reading

Not adding any new insights here - just want to help drag down the average rating. This is a terrible product - the scroll ball on mine got hosed very quickly and simply no longer works. Apple should have taken this product off the market years ago.

    Mighty Mouse

    • Written by from Buchanan

Worst mouse ever. I'm not even giving it a star. While I loved this thing when it worked, I have to buy a new one way too often. If you get the slightest little piece of dust or liquid on that ball, it stops working. Sometimes I can beat the mouse into submission and get it to work again, but most times that's just a temporary fix. Nothing worse than being able to only scroll up or only scroll down.

    Don't buy this mouse.

    • Written by from Hardwick

I'm on my second apple mouse. The new one is only 6 months old and the scroll ball won't scroll up. The last one had the same problem. There is no way to clean it and I work in a clean environment with a pad. I've tried to roll it up and down on my mouse pad to clean it, as recommended, but it is not working. For Apple, I'm surprised at such a serious design flaw. I could always open up the old-style mouse and clean the roller ball and it lasted forever. Unless you have the money to buy a new mouse every 6-12 months stay away from this one.

    Useless Junk

Total piece of garbage. I own 3 of these at home. And work at a school that has a lab with 7 of these mice. 100% of the time they get screwed up within 6-12 months of using them. The track balls stops working and it the mouse it self jumps around on the screen. AVOIDE THIS HARDWARE.

    Apple mouse scroll ball issues

The scroll ball on this mouse requires constant cleaning and eventually even that will not make it work. Do yourself a favor and avoid this piece of hardware.

    Fail, Big Time

    • Written by from Fort Worth

I have used this mouse at work for the last six months, and from day one I have been unimpressed. For starters, the cable is too short. Since Apple relocated every USB port to the left side of the MacBook Pro, being right handed makes using the mouse a hassle. If the side buttons are used for exposé, the lightest touch will set them off. The solid top construction causes the buttons to be accidentally pressed/released if the mouse is picked up to continue tracking. This happens quite often, considering the length of the cable. As for the scroll ball... it will quit working once a week, without fail (or maybe just fail). You can set your watch by it. I can usually resolve the problem by vigorously scrolling in every direction until I dislodge whatever was stuck. I'm of the firm opinion that Apple has never made a good mouse (although the Magic Mouse looks promising).

    Deeply Flawed Design

    • Written by from BALTIMORE

    1. The track ball is unreliable. Sometimes it 360's, sometimes it only goes up or to the side. Often it just sticks.
    2. The design is cool but way to slippery. There is no place where you can get a grip on the thing.
    3. Apple is down right "snarky" about this product. They won't refund money.
    4. The software to control/customize it is very difficult to use and not intuitive.

    Do Not Buy

    • Written by from cincinnati

Looks good and it's a cool design. But you cannot clean the "Innovative Scroll Ball and button" without destroying the mouse. The "Force-sensing side buttons" click constantly when you do not want them to. I had to disable them. Almost any mouse is probably better than this. I just trashed mine and am using a seven year old Microsoft mouse.

    • Written by from Escondido

DO NOT BUY! Run for your life. Easily the worst mouse I have ever used. It is as comfortable and ergonomic as a raw potato. It does not fit my hand, it gives me cramps, the 'whole-mouse click' is annoying and non-intuitive. The scroll wheel does not function well since it also scrolls sideways. Apple makes many wonderful high quality products. This is not one of them. Next time go ergonomic please (like most standard mice). I do appreciate the sleek visual design, but sometimes function should determine form.

    JUNK!

    • Written by

This is by far the worst product that Mac offers. I consider myself lucky that it lasted a whopping 7 months before I threw it away. The 'roller ball' technology is on par with that of pac-man. It was in constant need of repair, often every few days. The mac mouse should come with a free bottle of isopropyl alcohol to remedy the daily freezing of the roller ball. Save $35 and get yourself a competitor's mouse that is far superior. Too bad I had to give it any stars at all!

    Nice design. Poor functionality.

    • Written by from lansing

This is by far one of the worst Apple products. The small scroll wheel and the lack of separate mouse buttons makes it difficult to use with programs like Maya. It's really sad when a ten dollar third party mouse out performs this over priced catastrophe. If you plan to only use this mouse for simple applications, like Safari, it works fantastically, but still, is definitely not worth the money.

    an abomination

    • Written by from evansville

The batteries in my Microsoft wireless intellimouse explorer 2 recently died and I was forced to dig this thing out of my closet. Don't get me wrong, I am a total diehard Mac fan-boy and Apple keyboards are super but ironically when it comes to mice Apple is bad. Apple choses form over function when designing their mice which leads to mice that are absolutely painful to use and have zero functionality. The Mighty Mouse is Apple's attempt at hopping on this new "fad" of putting buttons on mice but with fake buttons. The Mighty Mouse is the single worst computer product I have ever used in my entire life, you would be better served going to Wal-Mart and buying a generic USB mouse for $10. Or better yet why not get a Microsoft or Logitech mouse, both companies make an array of excellent mice.

This is an Apple product? Ugh!

    • Written by from city of city

At first the mouse was a joy to use. Only complaint was the sensitivity of the side buttons was a bit too much. The built in trackball was amazing. Then within two days after opening the box suddenly the mouseball stopped scrolling down. Up, left right no problem.

So I looked around at the millions of other people posting about the exact same issue, found some solutions that brought the ball back to life. Upside down with force, use spit and roll the ball on clean paper, etc. However each time it would only resurrect the ball for a shorter and shorter period. There's no way to open it up to clean the rollers! It's a month later now and I want to lay the mouse in the street and drive over it with my car. Maybe that'll fix it once and for all.

I've owned Apple products since 1982. This is the first instance where I would suggest avoiding it like the plague. They need to issue a recall. Better balls for all!

Great idea and design... poorly built. This device gets a little dirty and quits doing what is supposed to do. I had to go to a dollar store and replace 'mighty' for a $7.00 mouse. The only thing I lost is the horizontal scroll. Sorry Apple.

When I bought my new Mac Pro, I assumed that everything would be top notch. This is not the case with the Mighty Mouse. The scroll ball is great in concept but fails miserably in performance. I cleaned it a couple of times and now it will not scroll up. The ball moves but nothing happens.
