Apple Mouse is a piece of Garbage

    • Written by from TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON

Another example of Apple's form over function failure. The mouse looks nice, but the little teeny track ball gets all gunked up then doesn't work. And despite Apple's instruction on how to clean it- cleaning doesn't work. I never, ever had this problem on any home or work PC mouse.

    Simple Mouse gone Bad

    • Written by from FLUSHING

I purposefully opted for the wired Apple Mouse. I didn't want to deal with batteries or the sort, and I don't have any fancy wireless requirements for my iMac. Unfortunately the scroll ball doesn't scroll up anymore. I read that a simple Q-tip and rubbing alcohol does the trick - but I don't want to do that every few weeks (or months). Looking back I would've opted for the wireless (not that I know if its scroll bar works well or not), but overall - just a regular mouse whose balls are messed up. Yeah I said it.

    Apple Mouse

    • Written by from Halifax

Much regret my Macally White Mouse died and had to be replaced with this one, which is far too heavy and has a scroll wheel that is is ridicuously too small: its relatively easy to scroll down - but try scrolling upwards! Its a real crock after the other one and I use it very little on my MacBook Plus.

Nor do I have any need for all those buttons, one is plenty; it only confuses the issue to do commands on the mouse that can perfectly well be done on the screen via the keyboard or pad.

Clean the Mouse roller ball!! It works!!

    • Written by from ASHLAND

This guy with the comment below has the trick! I tried it and it worked! I took his advise, got a Q tip and dipped in rubbing alcohol and rubbed it on the little ball and saw little tiny hairs and things come out. I just kept doing it till it was completely clean and it works great again!! Thanks so much.

    Rubbing Alcohol Really works!

All the posts about this mouse is about how the scroll bar doesn't work after a while. I saw a review about using Rubbing Alcohol and a Q-tip to fix it. It Works! Just take a Qtip, dip it in rubbing alcohol and then scroll around on the mouse with it. After all the gunk in out the scroll will work again! thanks so much for the tip!

    No right click

    • Written by from Dartmouth

Contrary to the documentation claims mine does not right click. I even went to the trouble to reinstall the software, totally shut my computer down and then restart it and, yes, I've made sure the secondary click is enabled. I've searched the Apple support site hoping to find old drivers for the mouse without success so I have no choice, but to return it. Thank God I bought it from a local retailer with a money back satisfaction guarantee.

    Great Product, 1 Major Flaw

    • Written by from Highlands Ranch

I really do love this mouse, it's a fantastic piece of innovative technology and greatly impressed me when I first starting using it. Sadly as mentioned by many other reviewers, the product becomes absolutely useless once dirt gets under the scroll ball. I've cleaned mine over and over again, on a few occasions I've been able to bring it back, but sadly now it sits on my desk broken. If it weren't for this issue, I would be singing its praises and telling you to buy this, but unfortunately I can't. The issue with the scroll ball, and no way to open the device up to properly clean it out makes this simply a waste of money.

Utter failure in execution of a great idea.

    • Written by from Brooklyn

This would be the best mouse I've ever used, but the scroll ball problem everyone mentions is unavoidable and is exasperating. When the mouse works, it is phenomenally efficient. When the scroll ball stops—and it will—you will want to murder someone.

None of the cleaning solutions work reliably. All are a nuisance. Apple not only guaranteed problems by using a mechanical scroll ball, but they guaranteed a hellish time for anyone trying to fix the problems, by GLUING the assembly shut. Jesus, what were they thinking.

I tried the Magic mouse, as an alternative and wanted to love it. Unfortunately I find it borderline unuseable. It's great for casual use, web surfiing etc,, but lacks precision for serious work and it frequently flps out when your hand brushes near it by mistake.

I'm hoping Magic Mouse 2.0 (if such a thing is coming) solves these problems, because all the other solutions on the market are frustrating.

Come on Apple. Please attend to these not so minor details with your engineering might.

Keep the track ball clean and its fine.

    • Written by from Bloomington

After thinking that I needed a new mouse I stumbled onto the paper technique of cleaning the track ball of my apple mighty mouse. Voila! it worked! Tried it on another mighty mouse and it too became fully functional! Just keep it clean! Oils from fingers combined with dust in the air must collect on the ball and compromise its function. Two of ours work great now, when they didn't before.

    The paper method plus

    • Written by from San Luis Obispo

The roller ball clog is a huge, ongoing problem. But, I tried the paper method discussed earlier (unplugging mouse and rolling the ball on a piece of paper) and it partially worked. So, I took it a step further and rolled the ball on a hand sanitizer sheet and it worked great. Hope this helps.

Mine only scrolls down and then not very well. I wouldn't by another at the cost when I can get a working one for a fraction of the price. Good idea but don't waste your money.

only a single button at a time

    • Written by from Redmond

The Apple Mouse only has the ability to record a single button press on the pressure-sensitive top area of the mouse. This means that you cannot simultaneously press both the left and right buttons to any effect. If you plan on playing many kinds of games -- including some top-selling titles on the App Store, Steam for Mac, or even various Flash/Web games -- you're going to be very, very disappointed with this mouse.

For less than the price of this mouse you can get one from almost any other manufacturer that will both work perfectly with all the regular Mac applications as well as with the Mac's growing library of games.

Bad mouse, they last me only 10-12 months buy at your own risk

    • Written by from Brooklyn

Like everyone said the trackball stops working I am currently on my third mouse soon to be called into AppleCare. This is a poorly designed product, while I love the function of the mouse being told I need to clean the trackball by rubbing it on my leg is crazy. I have older mice without the trackball that work fine years and years later, not months. My big complaint is in another two months I'm off AppleCare so I will need a FIFTH MOUSE by next year which I will never buy, just replace with a normal USB mouse instead. I refuse to waste money on a poorly designed product just to match. This mouse should of been designed to be cleaned and no rubbing on your leg or a piece of paper is not something anyone should be forced to do.

    I love this mouse!

    • Written by from Calipatria

I purchased my iMac in 2006 and this is the mouse it came with. I use it very often and still love it. I really love the multi directional scroll ball, and use the side squeezy buttons a lot more than I thought I would.

Have I found a few quirks? Sure. Sometimes the scroll ball stops tracking up (much better than losing down), but another reviewer gave a tip of rubbing the scroll ball on a clean piece of paper (with the mouse upside down)-- it works every time. The optics do not like the white laminate surface of my desk, nor anything shiny, but it works on most everything else, including my pant leg.

The click function is easy to work, and I haven't had any problems with over clicking. I really love this mouse and dislike using other ones.

Help for cleaning the Apple Mouse

    • Written by from Olympia

Thanks to @RB from Fort Myer, my Apple Mouse now works again! I've had little trouble with the mouse since 2007 when I bought my Intel based iMac... until yesterday. Then I read RB's post about rolling the trackball on a sheet of clean paper to clean it (make sure the paper is on a hard flat surface) and, viola! For now it is working perfectly again!

BTW, I also turn off the side buttons... to annoying to use.

Apple, Steve, whoever is listening, LISTEN to your devoted users, admit that, while beautiful and (for me at least) ergonomic, this design needs work!

    Awesome!

    • Written by from Woodland Hills

I LOVE this mouse! I'm writing this review because I've seen negative reviews that are clearly PEBMAC (Problem Exist Between MOUSE and Chair)!

The people who say the scroll ball gets dirty too fast must not wash their hands... or maybe they wash their hands with sand, either way, if your hands are clean the scroll ball will be too! Also, if it gets dusty (assuming your hands are clean but you live in a saw mill) you can simply use a a can of compressed air to clean it our (hint: spray air while you scroll for a few seconds).

And for the people who say it randomly clicks for no reason... are you fat? Do you have fat hands? Don't keep your hand resting on the device... duh. Some people have said "it's not ergonomic", look, I use my mouse a lot... A LOT, and its only tough on your hand if you sit all funny and leave your wrist in at a funny angle.

Stop hating on the mouse, probably the best I've used!

A Great mouse if you are conscientious

    • Written by from LANGLEY

Like all mice w/roller balls, you have to keep it clean.
One puff of canned air once a month or two does it.
I have had two of these for 5-6 years (in addition to a Magic Mouse + and a LogicTech), they still give that nice instant "hands-on" analogue feel that you cannot get with a wireless.

    Just keep it clean!
