    Flawless mouse, but short cord

    • Written by from Hamilton

I've been using this mouse since I purchased my iMac in October and it still works like new. I haven't had to clean the scroll ball once, but then again, I'm a chronic hand-washer. Right/left clicking works flawlessly as well. My only complaint is the very (ridiculously) short cord. I'm forced to use the mouse directly under my computer, which is quite frustrating and uncomfortable given the design of my desk.

i do and dont like this mouse. Yes, it may scroll both ways, but sometimes, it wont scroll up, its a easy fix, but even the left clicker stops working and acts as the right clicker.

    Works Great

    • Written by from Burlington

I have been using my mouse for close to 4 years now. Although I do have both types, the wireless for my laptop and the wired for my desktop, I prefer it to the wireless as it has more of the functions that I want for work. I clean it, and my keyboard, once every few months with a disinfecting wipe and find that to be enough to keep them both working smoothly and effectively. I don't find that the ball gums up as others say, all of my functions continue to work and work well. After 4 years of use 8 hours per day 5 days a week I think this product is well worth the money and beats any other mouse I have used over my extensive office experience.

    Needs Improvement

    • Written by from Gainesville

It starts working fine with ease, simplicity & beauty as promoted, but that starts fading away after a while & there's nothing one can do about it. The most annoying problem is the scrolling. Maybe it's because we the Apple customers consider your products to be excellent or flawless, but I went ahead & bought the same mouse even when the first one failed, yet the same happened again. I need a third mouse at this moment.

    Faulty design

    • Written by from TORONTO

Apple needs to build a better mouse. This is the 3rd mouse in 2 years. The scroll button always malfunctions in exactly the same way - won't scroll down - and doesn't return to proper functionality even after following Apple's cleaning directions. I brought the last one into the Apple Store and they couldn't get it to work.

Very disappointing and frustrating. I love Apple products and I'll probably be a Mac person for life, but this mouse is flawed.

    problematic, good when working

    • Written by from PORTLAND

When it works it is a great mouse. The scroller ball is prone to failure, although if you turn it upside down and wipe it with a tissue with alcohol on it (hold the ball in place with one of your figernails at different positions so you can actually WIPE it and not just move it around) this seems to clear up that issue. The other problem I have encountered is that the plastic coating around the wires breaks where it connects with the mouse because the coating is not flexible enough to allow more than say 30 degrees away from straight for the first 2 inches or so (!!), putting great strain on this part so that it breaks and exposes the wires.

    Not terrible

    • Written by from Medford

I like the function of this mouse and it seems to work for me but the real problem is the scroll ball. It gets gunked up and quits working. It is a hassle when it does not work so i disassembled the mouse and cleaned the sensors and now it works great! Just like new! All that you must do is pop off the white piece of plastic around the bottom of the mouse and then pop out the guts. It took like 15 minutes. The only problem is that when you pop off the bottom, it breaks the glue seal so you have to reglue the bottom back on. I also assume that this type of activity probably voids the warranty but it is worth it because it works great afterwards!

    Worst Apple Product

    • Written by from Bronx

After going through not one but three of them I am thinking it is the worst product in Apple's line-up. By the end of my experience I ended up buying the cheapest Logitech mouse I could find in frustration one night and it works to this day outlasting three Apple mice at a fraction of the cost. I missed the squeeze function but that is nothing compared to the frustration of faulty scroller ball.

The roller ball is the critical flaw, how they could not get something correct that is used so much amazes me. It will cease operating. You will clean it, it will function for a week or two and it will again sputter. On the first go around I gave it a second chance and ordered another. Repeat entire issue.

On the third go around I bought the wireless and made every attempt to keep my work area as clean as an Intel chip production factor floor. Still repeat on the roller ball jam up.

Part of me wanted to demand all of my money back on it.

I am ordering the new magic mouse with great optimism and here is to hoping Apple has finally got their mouse issue fixed. It is really the only piece of Apple Hardware that I have had massive disappointment on.

    Might Only Briefly

The mouse works really well out of the box. Then in about 6 months the scroll ball get dirty and there is no effective way to clean it. It is not removable. For the money, there are many better choices.
Apple, you make great stuff but you struck-out on the Mighty Mouse.

    Worst Apple Product Ever

    • Written by from Eugene

I don't even know where to begin with this thing - it is all around absolutely the worst Apple product I have ever owned, but I guess the worst thing is its ability to function as a mouse. Anyone who has the two-button functionality enabled knows the exquisite headache of trying to intuit what this small plastic egg will recognize as a right click or a left. The "side" buttons are a special treat as well - they are awkward to use, and don't tend to click "off" very well. The one redeeming point is the scroll wheel, which seems to function okay. So if you only need to scroll infinitely through one document, you're set. For those of us that need to use Sketchup or similar multi-click dependent programs, we must resort to third-party mice. Apple, please test future mice in people's hands, not in store windows.

    Clean it

    • Written by from DORAVILLE

I've had my Mighty Mouse for over two years and like most reviewers here, I had a problem with the scroll button functioning. I thought it was broken and that didn't make me happy. Then I read how to clean it. After turning it upside down and rolling the scroll button back and forth on a piece of plain bond paper, it was like new again.

After a time, it became dirty again and stopped working. I simply repeated the procedure, above, and it was like new again. I would give it 5 stars if I didn't ever have to clean the scroll ball, but it only takes a few seconds to clean it. I know I'm kind of messy - eating, etc around the computer so part of it is my own fault. Just clean it.

    ball problem quick fix!

    • Written by from Roswell

So the ball sticks cause it pulls dirt in.... Hold the mouse in your hand upside down, take rubbing alcohol on your finger and roll it over and over you will see all that dirt come out and it will work again! Still- a bad design for a pretty mouse.. but it will save you money to just fix it yourself.

    Definitely a source of stress

    • Written by from Baton Rouge

While the mouse is aesthetically pleasing and functionally neat, it does cause me a lot of stress. Ever month the scroll ball will stop working and I start wondering if I'll have to replace it.. then after 15 minutes of vigorous attempts at cleaning it starts working again. I have had the product for less than 9 months and I'm not sure how long I can keep dodging the bullet. So buy with caution.

Probably the best mouse on the market

    • Written by from NORTH LAS VEGAS

Anyone switching from Windows to Mac knows how difficult the transition is going from a two-button mouse to a one button mouse. Since the introduction of the Mighty Mouse a few years ago, this has made the transition so much easier. Having a 'standard' 5-button mouse with a track ball makes working a breeze. I've been a Mac user for 8 years (although I did use a Mac in the late '80s during high school) and I love the short cuts that the Mighty Mouse provides. This mouse and the other desktop shortcuts (desktop corners) really allow you to customize your whole Mac experience. The only short fall is hitting the mouse correctly when trying for either the left or right button... a minor set back.

    Worked well, died early.

    • Written by from Aptos

I really liked the design of this mouse, but it could use a few improvements: the side buttons required quite a bit of force to activate, and you had to lift your left finger completely off the mouse to right-click. Once I got used to it though it served me well, and the 360 scroll was its best feature.

Biggest problem, however, was that after 11 months of service the 360-scroll wheel stopped working. I could scroll down and to the right, but not up or left.... making the mouse fairly useless to me.

Four stars for design and function
    Two starts for longevity
    Three stars overall.

Awful mouse - avoid if possible

    • Written by from Utrecht

This is simply the worst designed piece of equipment I have to use. After the 10.4.9 update my Microsoft mouse I had been using, stopped working reliably (it interprets single clicks double or triple, making OS X a hazardous place to mouse around in).

So I'm back on the bundled wired Mighty Mouse, which sadly is an oxymoron. It's too low for my medium sized hands and the scroll button needs cleaning several times a day now.

I don't have grimey hands, just 'real world' hands. It's odd that so many bad reviews, all about the flawed design of the scroll button go unnoticed.

It's been out for a while but could definitely use a second generation that addresses these problems. Or they could fix it that my Microsoft mouse works again, since that one's ergonomically sound.

This one was bundled, I won't be buying a replacement and advise everyone to stay away from this flawed piece of tech.

    Good, but a bit unreliable

    • Written by from Northglenn

I like it and yet the scroll ball needs constant cleaning to keep working. See Apple's support site for their advice which is just water and a cloth.

The side buttons are a bit flakey. They've spazzed out on me a few times where they 'click' by themselves fairly rapidly.

It's neat how you right click by just pressing the right side of the mouse and yet it's not as reliable as just having a dedicated right mouse button. Sometimes you'll find a finger barely touching the left side of the mouse for instance and a right click won't register. Doesn't happen alot, but enough to annoy.

The short cord is nice for plugging the mouse into your keyboard.

Left clicking is what I like about the mouse the most. It just has a great feel to it and you can use all your fingers. It's why I still use the thing.

A redesign should make the scroll ball require less cleaning. It should better sense when you are right clicking even if your index finger remains touching the left side a bit (if possible.) And the side buttons should be easier to click.

Like everyone else, i loved the mighty mouse and the scroll ball. After about a year the scroll ball stopped working. i used all the methods online and it still wouldn't scroll down. :( This is obviously a common problem and hopefully apple is working on improving this product.

It was great at first, but...I have the same problem about scrolling--after only a few months, the scroll ball will only scroll UP, but not DOWN! And the movement of the mouse is slow and scratchy on any surface. Disappointing.
