Same scroll ball problem and awkward design

    • Written by from North York

So as many of the reviews indicate, I too have been suffering from the scroll ball problem periodically. It's stopped working twice already. I am going to invest in a non-Apple mouse while awaiting a more financially rational, better design. The scroll ball is weird. The whole design is awkward. And I've had the left button start to function as the right all of a sudden, only restarting fixed it. Very disappointing.

    Please, please....redesign this mouse

    • Written by from LAKE ARROWHEAD

I have had two MM's so far, same problem, the trackball fills up with gunge and stops working. I have to admit my hands are naturally a bit damp, but this must apply to a large % of the population. Hence, the trackball picks up skin detritus quickly and the trackball stops working.

I have dismantled both mice to get them working again, but, not a totally satisfactory solution.

Best solution is to redesign the trackball.

My humble suggestion is to use an optical trackball solution. No mechanical interaction, so dirt etc cannot interfere and also possibly, more accurate.

So please, Apple, update the Mighty Mouse and you will have a winner!!!

    Trackball is horrible

    • Written by from Sioux Falls

Just to add to what so many have said already... the little trackball jams up frequently and is very frustrating. However, it is relatively easy to "un-jam" by simply turning the mouse upside down and rubbing the trackball briskly back and forth on a clean sheet of paper until the offending grit comes out and the ball moves freely again. I find myself repeating this maneuver at least daily as the scrolling function grinds to a halt when some tiny piece of grit or dust from my finger finds its way under the ball. Ridiculous product from a company like Apple who is so committed to quality and user experience. This mouse will drive you mad. Get something else!

The scroll ball on this thing is terrible.

It feels funny on your finger, but worse, it gets gunk caught up in it and stops working.

You can clean it, but eventually it will stop scrolling down no matter what you do.

I almost always wash my hands before I sit down at the computer and I have gone through two of these mice in the past year before finally buying the Magic Mouse.

    BUY A REAL MOUSE.

Scroll ball dead after only 5 months

    • Written by from Shelburne

The scroll ball no longer works and the mouse needs to be replaced after only 5 months of use. For a computer that cost me well over $2,000 I expect better. I would not buy this product again and am looking for an alternative mouse to replace this one with.

Also the side buttons are awkward to use.

    several issues with mouse.

    • Written by from Eatontown

I've have the mouse for over two and a half years now. Although beautifully designed, like most apple products, this mouse has been a disappointment. The scroll bar is very unreliable and tends to stick and not move. My mouse also has the tendency to totally spazz out and expose will be activated unexpectedly at times, which can get REALLY annoying.

:( Mighty Mouse is Might Bad

    • Written by from Huntington Beach

My second mighty mouse has died. I have tried cleaning it with the lint free cloth as suggested, but still to no avail. The mighty mouse will not scroll down. :( I thought that maybe we initially had a flakey mouse, so we bought another one and now this one is dying as well. I'm sorry to say, but this mighty mouse is a bad product--design flaws = poor performance.

    =(

    Not Too Reliable

    • Written by from INDIANAPOLIS

As many have stated, it stops scrolling up and down. But reading the reviews, I learned that turning it upside down and rubbing the rubber ball over a piece of paper cleans it. I tried it and it worked! Thanks for saving me time and money ($49) trying to replace it. :)

Don't ever pay attention to the 5 stars

    • Written by from Browns Mills

The mouse is great functionally. Other than that, it's horrible.

The ball will get dirty. You can't get around it. You can wash your hands everytime, but it'll get dirty. You can try all the tutorials out there that say put it upside down and roll it over a paper towel, but eventually, it's just never going to come back. It'll scroll up but never down, or whatnot.

I got tired of those "How to clean the ball on the mac mouse" tutorials where all they did was take a paper towel and run the ball on it. It would only alleviate the problem for a short bit and this time it just didn't work at all. So I did what you think you can do to any mouse or keyboard if you have to do some really deep cleaning, disassemble it. You can do this with any computer device other than apple products, apparently.

Ok, mission accomplished. Great. But now I can't put that outer ring back in without gluing it back because it doesn't snap back. It seems that Apple attached it using some adhesive.

Why? Why would they even think this was a good idea!? I've never met a mouse where once you disassemble it, you can't reassemble it using what's already in it (be that it snaps together or using some screws).

Finally had it with the scroll wheel.

    • Written by from Cambridge

This mouse tracks very well - better than any other mouse I've used so far. However, the nub of a scroll wheel is infuriating. It works for a while, and then stops working due to it getting dirty. Cleaning it by turning the mouse upside down and rubbing the scroll wheel on a cloth temporarily, and only partially, fixes things until more dirt builds up in there. Since there is no way to take the mouse apart, it's impossible to fully clean the scroll wheel. This mouse will work well for casual use, but with daily use, the non-functioning scroll wheel eventually becomes too much of a nuisance. It's too bad, the slim profile and excellent tracking make for a good mouse otherwise.

    Scroll Ball Problems

    • Written by from Austin

After extended use in normal operating environments the scroll ball will eventually stop functioning properly and fail to scroll down, it continues to scroll up. This is, in my opinion, a known design flaw with the Mighty Mouse and buyers should be aware that eventually their scroll ball will stop working. The internet is full of temporary fixes to restore functionality, but the real fix requires Apple to reconsider the poor design of the device.

    The roll ball keeps breaking

    • Written by from Santa Barbara

I am on my third Mighty Mouse! It's a great design, it works. Until the roller ball gets dirty and quits scrolling. It happened with the original mouse that came with the computer, then the replacement mouse I bought, and now once again. Each time I am convinced I can keep the mouse clean. I purell my hand, I carefully wipe the ball clean with a cloth or paper. Nope. Third strike. I wish Apple would update the "strength" of this Mighty Mouse.

    Thanks reviews!

    • Written by from Poplar Grove

I was just checking the price of a new MM since mine stopped scrolling up/down after approximately a year of fine service. I view blueprints on my computer and enjoyed the ease my little scroll ball brought to this task. I tried the paper trick--no luck! Thanks to the reviews I will not be purchasing another MM.

P.S. my hands are always clean when working on my computer, isn't that a no brainer?

    Very poor functionality

    • Written by

I am not concerned too much about this mouse's appearance and price, but its FUNCTIONALITY has screwed me up for so many times. Just to name a few:

    1. The cable is UNREASONABLY SHORT to use with almost all computer desks and laptops without USB on the right side.

    2. If you use this mouse daily, be prepared to CLEAN its internal EVERY YEAR since the scroll ball gets dirty pretty quickly. This cleaning process is ridiculous. You have to carefully disassemble the scroll ball and clean each tiny plastic piece very carefully, which can easily cost you 1-2 hour. What is more, you need to find some glue to stick the bottom frame back - a design that I strongly believe as a means of discourage self-cleaning.

    3. There is no means to press BOTH the left and the right button together, making this mouse a useless rubbish when playing Minesweeper and some other games.
