    Flawless mouse, but short cord

I've been using this mouse since I purchased my iMac in October and it still works like new. I haven't had to clean the scroll ball once, but then again, I'm a chronic hand-washer. Right/left clicking works flawlessly as well. My only complaint is the very (ridiculously) short cord. I'm forced to use the mouse directly under my computer, which is quite frustrating and uncomfortable given the design of my desk.

    Clean it

I've had my Mighty Mouse for over two years and like most reviewers here, I had a problem with the scroll button functioning. I thought it was broken and that didn't make me happy. Then I read how to clean it. After turning it upside down and rolling the scroll button back and forth on a piece of plain bond paper, it was like new again.

After a time, it became dirty again and stopped working. I simply repeated the procedure, above, and it was like new again. I would give it 5 stars if I didn't ever have to clean the scroll ball, but it only takes a few seconds to clean it. I know I'm kind of messy - eating, etc around the computer so part of it is my own fault. Just clean it.

Great once you know the "secret"

I was really happy with this mouse until the scroll wheel started behaving erratically. I'd already replaced one and was cursing Apple and about to throw this one out when I discovered that simply rolling the ball on a clean surface (a sheet of paper seems to work best) fixed it perfectly. Now whenever it starts acting up I just "clean the ball" and it's back to "like new". Apple really needs to make it easier to find the "fix" for this product 'cause it's really the best mouse I've used when its working.

One good rule, always wash your hands every time you address the computer and it's devices. Every now and then clean the interactive devices. In 3 years I've never had a problem. This is the most reliable and simple device I have ever used.

I had been enjoying my Mighty Mouse for several months, then the trackball stopped working properly (it wouldn't scroll down). I thought I needed to replace the mouse, but checked the support forums first. The Mighty Mouse trackball CAN be cleaned. Turn the mouse upside down and rub the trackball with a lint free cloth such as the one that comes with the iMac. This solved my problem and has restored the might of my mouse.

I wish Apple would make a new version of this mouse, with a laser assisted ball instead of this one that works using rollers. The ball eventually begins to fail due to the inevitable introduction of dirt and grime.

With a laser tracker it would work flawlessly.

This is the most ergonomic and comfortable design Apple has released. The newer "Magic Mouse" is too low and uncomfortable to use. It causes me severe pain in my wrist, whereas this one causes no pain at all.

Clean your mouse and wash the french fry grease off your fingers

My scroll wheel lost functionality recently so I searched for: cleaning mouse scroll wheel.
There were plenty of hits online.
I took a can of compressed air and inverted it so it would blow liquid refrigerant out the spray tip instead of air. I turned the mouse upside down and pressed the tip against the scroll ball to try to get the spray to go between the ball and the mouse cover.
I sprayed a couple of blasts into the beast. Almost got frostbite from the liquid propellant that dripped on my fingers - that stuff is cold!
Then I rolled the mouse upside down on a microfiber lint free cloth placed flat on a table top.
I think Apple says to just turn the mouse over and roll the scroll ball for a while - but it was more fun with the compressed air. Don't try this at home - I am a professional.

How to fix your scroll wheel on the mighty mouse

    • Written by from Winnipeg

I have given the wired mouse a four star rating only because it looks good, and performs well if {and this is a big IF}: it must be kept clean.
I use the alcohol swabs you can buy at any drugstore and clean the dirt regularly.
I too had the scroll wheel start to underperform and not scroll properly, then I learned that if you ran the swab over the wheel and turned at the same time it ran the alcohol down into the mouse and cleaned up the dirt that that had accumulated.
Within seconds the scroll wheel worked as new.
And it works well on cleaning the bottom of the mouse that accumulates dirt from any surface you are working on.
Is the design poor? Yes! But if kept clean it does seem to work o.k.

Thanks HP On 2/18/08 post about Trackball on MM. I was a little upset about my trackball problem and performed your handy tip and you were right VOILA! It is back to normal...I guess the kids cannot have anything near my new beautiful iMac. I am very excited. I thought I was going to run over to the Apple store and buy another one. Great mouse, just not amazing

Yes this mouse has many flaws, but most are easily fixed. The biggest one seems to be the scroll ball. I searched online for answers, actually found this one on Apple's community support page.

Just unplug the mouse, turn it upside down, and press the scroll ball onto a clean sheet of paper and rub it somewhat fiercely, to clean the ball and restore functionality.

I have used it in Windows 7 and Mac OS Snow Leopard. Loved the customization of Mac OS, install the drivers, (search apple's website for windows drivers) and it's a wonderful little addition to your computer.

(if using for a desktop, go buy a usb extension cable unless your keyboard has usb ports) The cord is very short but keep in mind it was designed to work with the Apple keyboards which have built in usb ports to minimize cord clutter, since wireless peripherals didn't always exist.

    Aaalmost great

The Apple Mouse (previously known as Mighty Mouse) is just a fantastic piece of technology. Its design is quite obvious - once you start to use it - and makes you wonder "why someone hasn't come with this idea before?" in amazement. The only negative point is that you can't take it apart to clean its innards. The 'nipple' scroll ball gets stuck after a few months, yes. A few drops of isopropyl alcohol on it is enough to get it up and running again, though. That's the only thing keeping me to give this a full 5 star review. Despite all these negative reviews - I can't argue with them: the ball DOES stuck - this IS a very well designed and crafted mouse.

keep from eating cheetos and all will be smooth sailing with this mouse. I've been using mine since it launched an it's great. Takes some getting used to the feel of it, and sure the tiny scroll ball will get clogged up if you use the mouse with grit on your fingers. The simple solution is to take a cleaning cloth and rub it fast against the ball while holding the mouse upside down, then tap the mouse against a book or something to clear out the gunk. It will be working in a few seconds.

If you're some type of slob that eats pizza, and cheese products with your bare fingers then you probably won't enjoy this mouse.

We've had our Mighty Mouse for two years and love it, but like others experience frustration with the trackball not working.

I combined two tips I read online, and after months of not working, my trackball is now like new again.

I got a pre-moistened alcohol wipe and put it down on a hard surface. Then I turned the Mighty Mouse upside down and rubbed the trackball firmly in all directions over the alcohol wipe. Just wiping the mouse with the alcohol wipe had done nothing to improve its performance, so I was skeptical, but the combination of alcohol and pressure did the trick, and now it's working just fine again.

    scroll ball problems

This is my second mouse since I purchased my computer about a year ago. When the scroll ball on this one quit functioning, I just sprayed it with electronic cleaner, both on the ball and on the bottom and it began to function properly immediately. No fuss, no residue. Apple should sell this type of product.

This guy with the comment below has the trick! I tried it and it worked! I took his advise, got a Q tip and dipped in rubbing alcohol and rubbed it on the little ball and saw little tiny hairs and things come out. I just kept doing it till it was completely clean and it works great again!! Thanks so much.

All the posts about this mouse is about how the scroll bar doesn't work after a while. I saw a review about using Rubbing Alcohol and a Q-tip to fix it. It Works! Just take a Qtip, dip it in rubbing alcohol and then scroll around on the mouse with it. After all the gunk in out the scroll will work again! thanks so much for the tip!

A Great mouse if you are conscientious

Like all mice w/roller balls, you have to keep it clean.
One puff of canned air once a month or two does it.
I have had two of these for 5-6 years (in addition to a Magic Mouse + and a LogicTech), they still give that nice instant "hands-on" analogue feel that you cannot get with a wireless.

    Just keep it clean!

I came on here to buy a NEW mouse since my scroll ball wasn't working anymore. i saw on a review to get a clean white paper, turn the mouse upside down and rub the scroll ball on the white paper. ALL THESE BLACK SPECKS came out! and then a big CHUNK of black came out! I kept doing it until there was no more black stuff coming out. and now my scrolling ball works fine!!

Every product will eventually break down. This mouse- it was just dirty. Now don't you get dirty sometimes and you need a good cleanin'? :)

Life Expectancy of the Apple Mouse

    • Written by from Gatineau

This is just from experience, but both my friend and I have had our Apple mice for about 3 years now and coincidentally they both stopped working properly at around the same time! Maybe a week apart... Unable to drag files around anymore, the mouse will just jump somewhere else when trying to drag and it'll mess everything up... It's a fair life expectancy for using it hours upon hours daily considering the work we do. And it's only about fifty bucks to replace it when it dies like that.
    Just a little FYI.

Okay, so my mouse's trackball stopped working and I pretty determined to buy a new one, that wasn't an apple brand.
But then I went to see what everyone else's problem was, and they had the same. Grease in the trackball, malfunctions, and what not.
But after taking the advice of 'printer paper, roll mouse up and down and all around for 60 seconds' and the 'rubbing alcohol wiping'.
Just try those before you give up.
