    Apple Mouse is a piece of Garbage

    Another example of Apple's form over function failure. The mouse looks nice, but the little teeny track ball gets all gunked up then doesn't work. And despite Apple's instruction on how to clean it- cleaning doesn't work. I never, ever had this problem on any home or work PC mouse.

    update this design, please

    I wish Apple would make a new version of this mouse, with a laser assisted ball instead of this one that works using rollers. The ball eventually begins to fail due to the inevitable introduction of dirt and grime.

    With a laser tracker it would work flawlessly.

    This is the most ergonomic and comfortable design Apple has released. The newer "Magic Mouse" is too low and uncomfortable to use. It causes me severe pain in my wrist, whereas this one causes no pain at all.

    Apple should be ashamed.

    This is the third mighty mouse to fail me in a little over a year. Despite cleaning the scroll ball they all eventually fail. I'm truly surprised that someone has not initiated a class action law suit against Apple for this miserable product. If it was an el' cheapo mouse that would be one thing, but these are expensive. If this was car part it would be recalled, if it was an aircraft part the FAA would ground it, if it was a medical device the FDA would ban it.

    Clean your mouse and wash the french fry grease off your fingers

    My scroll wheel lost functionality recently so I searched for: cleaning mouse scroll wheel.
    There were plenty of hits online.
    I took a can of compressed air and inverted it so it would blow liquid refrigerant out the spray tip instead of air. I turned the mouse upside down and pressed the tip against the scroll ball to try to get the spray to go between the ball and the mouse cover.
    I sprayed a couple of blasts into the beast. Almost got frostbite from the liquid propellant that dripped on my fingers - that stuff is cold!
    Then I rolled the mouse upside down on a microfiber lint free cloth placed flat on a table top.
    I think Apple says to just turn the mouse over and roll the scroll ball for a while - but it was more fun with the compressed air. Don't try this at home - I am a professional.

    How to fix your scroll wheel on the mighty mouse

    I have given the wired mouse a four star rating only because it looks good, and performs well if {and this is a big IF}: it must be kept clean.
    I use the alcohol swabs you can buy at any drugstore and clean the dirt regularly.
    I too had the scroll wheel start to underperform and not scroll properly, then I learned that if you ran the swab over the wheel and turned at the same time it ran the alcohol down into the mouse and cleaned up the dirt that that had accumulated.
    Within seconds the scroll wheel worked as new.
    And it works well on cleaning the bottom of the mouse that accumulates dirt from any surface you are working on.
    Is the design poor? Yes! But if kept clean it does seem to work o.k.

    Epic Fail

    I am a major Mac fan - got it all: macbook, imac, iphone, ipod, you get the picture. The mouse that came with my imac started to booger up about 6 months after purchase: scroll ball becomes temperamental. Eventually stopped working all together. Got a second one ... now 8 months out, same thing. I'm done with this "Not-so-Mighty Mouse"! I'll be getting a different mouse. It's the only Apple product I've had problems with, but geez, after searching, this is a chronic issue with this product - FIX IT PEOPLE!! Why would you want us to have all these fabulous electronics and get a lame mouse to ruin the experience! Needs a redesign, that's for SURE!

    Scroll Ball is Terrible

    The Apple Store uses adjectives such as innovative, revolutionary, and amazing to describe the scroll ball on this mouse. Frustrating and useless is a much more accurate description. It will occasionally work fine for awhile but then it will stop. Often it will scroll in one direction only which is much more frustrating than not working at all. I've used three of these. They have all had the problem. I've come across many mice that I didn't like but none have been more annoying than the Mighty Mouse.

    wheel gunks up inside - impossible to clean!

    This thing is fantastic. But after about 3 weeks the scroll wheel already started sticking. This happens every now and then, and if you mess with it you can get it working again. But here I am after about 11 months and it won't scroll down and I can't work it free, this time it's really shot.

    Just watched a video online about how to take it apart and clean it. Umm...not easy. Seriously apple? If it's that hard to seal the little parts inside from dust and debris, then for the love of god make it easier to clean! It's glued together! That's ridiculous. So i've got to go for a $50 mouse every year now? And be periodically annoyed by it that whole time whe it intermittently sticks?!?

    You get used to the scrolling action and it really is great, so when it stops working it's even more annoying than you'd think. Ugh, my love/hate relationship with apple continues...

    Do not buy if you have a notebook!

    It is beyond me as to why Apple would create a wired mouse that is unusable to macbook users (unless, of course, you are left-handed.) The cord is so short, and seeing as the usb drive is on the left side, buyers are forced to keep the mouse to the left of their macbooks. This means that we must then spend another $20 upgrading to the wireless version.

    Your better off going to a pet shop

    If it wasn't for the cord, I would I thrown this device out of my city flat window and down to the busy traffic below, many times by now! Yeah Apple make great computers, great software, I had a Powerbook that lasted for years, but this mouse is useless. It works wonderfully for the first three weeks, then the scroll wheel picks up some dirt and it's useless. I have figured out how to crack the case and clean the insides, but this is a mission and a total waste of my time. And now it seems to jump onto the dashboard whenever it feels like it! Buy this and you'll be coming back to get it replaced in about 6 months (if that).

    A constant battle to keep the scroll ball working

    Works great in the beginning. Very customizable and cool-looking. But soon, you find that the scroll ball begins to malfunction. There are temporary fixes (Windex, alcohol, pressing hard and scrolling), but the problem only gets worse with time. In general, I love Apple products because they are robust for years. This product is a dog!

    Great for 12 months, then it gums up and into the landfill it goes!!!

    I've been using this mouse for about 12 months, and it's absolutely great when the scroll ball (track ball on the top of the mouse) is working. I like the size and ergonomics of the mouse just fine, the left and right clicking works perfectly, and I love the multi-directional scrolling with the track ball which enables me to scroll quickly both up-down and side-to-side on large spread sheets and web pages. The problem lies in the maintenance of the little track ball. Once it starts to get dirty from the normal oil that we all have on the surface of our skin, it slips a little on the inside of the mouse (meaning that the track ball moves but the cursor on your screen doesn't), Apple recommends that you flip it upside down and run it around on a damp cloth, which works fine for a month or so, but eventually the dirt on the inside of the trackball housing accumulates to the point where the track ball gets so intermittent that it's useless. And like so many other seemingly high-design Apple products, it's impossible to take apart and properly clean. Since there is no recycling symbol on the bottom of the mouse, there is only one place left for it to go --> into the trash and into the landfill. So much for Apple's green commitment.

    mighty mouse

    loved this mouse when I first got it. The scroll ball stopped scrolling down after just a few months. This quickly becomes a big pain in the neck!

    Save Your Money

    This is my third Mighty Mouse. It starts off working great then the wheel will get stuck and you need to roll it on a piece of paper to clean it out. All 3 have stopped working within a month or two. The third one stopped working this morning where no matter what I did I could not get the mouse to work properly.

    Save your Money.

    You shouldn't need to keep fixing it.

    I took DC from Westerly's advice (below) and used a sheet of paper to fix the scroll sphere that didn't work. My mouse stopped working after 3 months of use. This was good advice and the mouse is working again. Thanks for that. Now, for Apple's reputation and for getting charged $50 for this mouse, I should not be turning it upside down and rolling it on paper to get it working again. It is frustrating.

    Bad...

    This mouse is BAD. I used it for over a year dealing with the stupid scroll button that regularly didn't work. I never realized how bad it was until I went out and got a new Logitech mouse. This mouse is a waste of money. There are way better ones on the market.

    Deeply flawed design

    This mouse has several problems, making it difficult to use. The first is the tracking. On every surface I've tried to use this mouse on, the tracking tends to jump in random directions. This turns the action of moving the mouse pointer into a frustrating game of hide-and-seek. I've been using optical mice for years now, and this is the first that absolutely fails to regularly track on a normal desktop surface.

    The next is the scroll ball, which frequently stops working and requires cleaning. This design flaw has been present since the introduction of the Mighty Mouse, yet Apple has done nothing to resolve or mitigate it. Scrolling with the mouse is an important operation for me, and having it fail is a jarring experience.

    Finally, the mouse has a high failure rate in detecting right-clicks. The buttonless design is sleek, but does not work well. The Wired Might Mouse is a concrete example of Apple putting placing purity of design over ease of use.

    Left click? RIght click? Whatevah!

    A terrible mouse whose "buttonless" design renders it incapable of distinguishing left and right clicks reliably. You will find that any click on either has a 20% chance to be detected as the opposite of the side you actually pressed. This unacceptable attribute was shouldered in pursuit of the single-piece plastic cover -- a poor choice indeed.

    What do I like about the mouse? I think the scroll orb is nice for combining horizontal and vertical scroll functions without being needlessly large.

    If you want a wired mouse, go get a $15 Microsoft Basic USB. The only thing you surrender is horizontal scrolling, but you get the truly essential: two buttons that actually WORK.

    I have owned plenty of "mouses" in my lifetime and the Mighty Mouse is by far the sorriest.

    What is so annoying about it? Imagine surfing online and when you go to left click, (which is nothing but a command to stabilize your curser) the command all of a sudden turns into a right click command. Suddenly your right click and left click become one and the same. Absolutely annoying. On top of that, the scrolling ball will act up as well. Sometimes the ball will allow you to scroll up, only to refuse to scroll down. After getting beyond frustrated, I shutdown and restart my Mac, hoping it will resolve the issue. Within minutes of the reboot, I can scroll down with the scroll ball, only to be denied of scrolling back up. Completely insane.

    It's 2008, folks. I cannot believe a mouse can be this bad.

    HP was Right!!!

    Thanks HP On 2/18/08 post about Trackball on MM. I was a little upset about my trackball problem and performed your handy tip and you were right VOILA! It is back to normal...I guess the kids cannot have anything near my new beautiful iMac. I am very excited. I thought I was going to run over to the Apple store and buy another one.
