    Destroying Misconceptions

    • Written by from El Monte

I'm hearing about a lot of scrolling problems with all of your mice. Maybe you've been treating it a little too roughly– admit it, for those who've harshly pressed the buttons and scroll to get them to work, or accidentally dropped your mouse off the desk. I've done those things, and my mouse is still working fine. Yes, I've had scrolling problems like many people here are describing, but after days of frustration, I did this: according to a WikiHow article, I turned the mouse upside down and gently rubbed it all over a handkerchief, the delicate kind used for glasses. Literally right there, I scrolled it and it absolutely worked. Possibly you've tried all of these things without success, and maybe your mouse is truly faulty. After buying my mouse from the thrift store (wonder why someone donated a 50 dollar mouse- it didn't look brand new either), I've had it for more than 4-6 months and it works fantastic. I especially love how the scroll allows you to go sideways, since I've always grudgingly scrolled my mouse to the bottom scroll bar of a window while using a normal mouse. The side buttons work fine, too.

P.S. For those you get dead skin cells and all of the gross dust in the side buttons, simply get in there with one of those sample mascara testers you get at Sephora, and all of it goes bye-bye.

    Apple Mouse $49 USB Secret

    • Written by from Castroville

The scroll ball eventually gets dirty. I have had several and they are expensive for a mouse that only lasts for an extended time before the scroll ball starts to fail. However I like the feel and performance of the mouse, and it doesn't use up batteries like some others. The secret to extending the mouse performance is to use a zero residue contact cleaner and spray the scroll ball and work it while the mouse is upside down. This will give you back your mouse performance for an extended time before you have to do it again.

    Not worth it

    • Written by from Lilburn

Good grief, this design is still around?

I've had to crack one of these apart to clean the trackball and had to use superglue to put it back together. Two years later I'm going to need to crack it apart again. It's a cool idea and feels good to use. It a nice looking mouse, but it can't be cleaned!

I can't recommend this product. The fact it cannot be cleaned really is a fatal flaw.

    scroll wheel fix

    • Written by from Indianapolis

If the scroll wheel malfunctions, just rub some alcohol over it with a cloth back and forth and it will work again because the oil that got on it from your finger will be removed. A great product except when it malfunctions, but it's easy to fix.

    Great mouse

    • Written by from Esmont

This mouse is very good, I prefer it over the mighty mouse as it has far more functionality with the side buttons particularly if you have a lager monitor and many windows.

For those who find the track ball too prone to failure, I recommend washing your hands more often. I have many of this model mouse which have been used in the field, some five or more years old, and all I do is clean the ball, blow a little air and back into service they go. It's not the mouse that defective, it's our dirty hand and work areas. Don't use hand lotion on you finger tip, Frito's and other greasy food are the devil for these devices. If you what to work that what buy one of the many PC tank mice and be on your way.

ROLLER BALL DOES NOT WORK CONSISTENTLY

Agree with previous comments. For a $50 dollar mouse, the roller ball worked for only a few weeks and now does not!

    looks good…works bad…lousy product

    • Written by from downingtown

Scroll ball ceased to function after two weeks. Second one same after about one month. Obviously won't be purchasing a third.

One of the worst products Apple has ever put on the market. My "opinion" is well-documented by this point, but thought I'd add to the sea of displeasure just the same.

Very expensive, Average performance, Horrible scroll wheel

    • Written by from Chapel hill

If you buy this mouse I suggest you read about cleaning the scroll wheel. You'll be doing it a lot. One or more of the scroll directions fails constantly because even the smallest bit of dirt is capable of jamming the internal scroll sensor.

Single button clicking is also a problem if you're a converted Windows user.

Instead, but a Microsoft mouse that feels better and is more reliable at less than half the cost.

    Apple has improved this mouse!

I HIGHLY recommend this for GAMERS, but the magic mouse kinda doesn't fit me that much because it will scroll sometimes when I am just clicking the magic mouse.

    Some common sense please

    • Written by from Vancouver

Biggest complaint about it, the track ball stops working. A. maybe wash your hands from time to time. Oil and dust from our skin is unavoidable but 1 month or even 6 months and already having problems is on you. B. If it acts up, flip it over and start doing figure eights on a blank sheet of paper and watch as the eight starts showing color....ewwww. I love these mice (the plural for mouse previous reviewer) and pick them up all the time for next to nothing because of "problems" with the scroll ball. I have a box of more than twenty spares at my office all of which were fixed this way, 100% success rate. You can perform this quick fix or just take it apart and thoroughly clean it which takes all of a whopping three to five minutes. These concepts can't be escaping you people, its' common sense. I would take once of these over the horrific Magic Mouse any day of the week. My only complaint, where is the aluminum?

The mouse has worked well for me for years.

    • Written by from West Des moines

I have Apple products at home, but we have Windows machines where I work. So, I bought an Apple wired keyboard and this wired mouse. I think I have been using it for over 4 years. I had a tracking software that said I click it about as many times as I hit a key on the keyboard. I think the mouse movement is over a mile a year. I am an application developer, so I am at the keyboard all day. I use the scroll all the time to navigate large documents and web pages. I must keep my hands clean, because I have never had to clean the scroll button. I have read several people say they have problem cleaning, but it has not been an issue. I hold the mouse so much that I think I am starting to wear the paint off. The sides are showing a greenish hue. I assume that is the underlying plastic and there is discoloration around the place I typically push for left click.

    Scroll ball fails quickly

    • Written by from Milford

As many others have reviewed, the scroll ball fails far too quickly. What you're left with is an ok mouse...and a wish that you'd purchased a better-engineered mouse.

    Need longer cord

    • Written by from Chester Springs

Why can't apple make the cord longer a bit? For the price we are paying for it, it won't hurt. Besides the USB ports on the MacBooks are on the left side, and for a right hander, the mouse cord length is really tight.

All other features are good on the mouse though, rating it low because of the cord length, which is a bit annoying. Same goes with the iPhone/iPad charging USB cables, they could be a foot or two longer!

    Worst design ever.

    • Written by from San Luis Obispo

This has got to be the worst mouse design ever. The ball malfunctions within a couple of months. Spent the extra cash and get a different one...it'll save you from freaking out trying to get the thing to work.

Just recently purchased the Apple Magic mouse and it is not bad if you stand 6 inches away from my MacBook Pro but if you get more than a foot away the mouse almost does not work at all. It is like I have a $70 paperweight I might as well just burn my money because this thing is junk...DO NOT BUY ONE IS ONE THERE ARE A LOT BETTER MICE OUT THERE FOR A LOT CHEAPER
