    Great keyboard!

I purchased this keyboard to use with a Windows XP PC. After two weeks of use, my hands and palms haven't felt this great in a long time. In the first few minutes of use, you can really feel your palm muscles relaxing. Yes, it does take some time to get used to typing on this keyboard and there are the occasional hangups when using with a Windows PC, as others have mentioned, but these are insignificant when considering the overarching ergonomic benefits.

    Really nice !

I have this keyboard from October 2008 and its the best I have used.
Its thin, solid, really nice looking.
The keys a low, so typing is kind of a faster.
The only problem is that i cant charge my Iphone from the 2 usb ports in the back, but i can live with it.
The next one probably should be with a changeble height (this one is fixed .. the heigh is good, but probably i want to try it a bit higher) and with a backlight keys.
Keep up the good work :)

Flipping Sweet, except for one thing....

I've had mine for about a year now. Love it!
It's quiet, easy to keep clean, and sleek.

Only one thing, for some reason, from time to time, whenever I need to capitalize "t" in what I'm typing, Shift + T won't work...

I have not experienced this with any other key, just "t"... very weird. Oh well! If I back up and try again, it works. No biggy! =)

    Beautiful and elegant, but...

The new Apple keyboard is a piece of art for itself, but there is only one flaw in my opinion. You can't use it with your iPod unless you have new aluminum iMac. I am using older version of MacBook Pro, and additional monitor so I have to crouch behind both keyboard and monitor in order to sync an iPod. Apart from that, BEAUTIFUL!
4 of 5 stars only because of the iPod connection!

    Great Keyboard.

I would give it 5 stars if the USB ports on the side would actually be useful. A mouse is the only thing that can plug into them (so why have 2....)

USB Sticks, iPods (HELLO!!??) or any powered device (camera) dont work there....

It's true: the space bar is a problem

    • Written by from Brooklyn

As someone noted a year or two ago, there is a problem with the build of the space bar. Specifically, if you hit the bottom--i.e., the lower edge of the space bar, the edge closest to your body--the keyboard will not type a space.

Theoretically it's possible to retrain your typing execution so that both thumbs ride higher on the space bar--i.e., much closer to the top edge, the edge closest to the C, V, B, N, M, "," keys.

I've already started doing that, on my first day of using the keyboard, with fairly good results.

The Caps Lock key similarly does not always activate--but I'm not sure why.

And of course there's the issue of the keys not being backlit.

Otherwise, the keyboard is great. These problems might normally cause me to give it only 3 stars. But because the feel and look are so amazing, and because this keyboard gives you a fully separate numeral pad, AND dedicated Home, End, PageUp, PageDown keys, I think it's a good bargain at $50 (current price as of 1/3/09).

The software install was seamless, too (firmware upgrade to the keyboard accomplished by Apple, Software Update).

    After a year of use...

    I'm torn.

This unit, and the counterpart built into my macbook, are quiet, sturdy, and quite stunning—for keyboards.

However, my fingers still get tripped up by the new design. This is frustrating because it means I type better on a standard PC keyboard. I feel as though I own a sleek new sports car but prefer my old sedan.

But the keyboard is not rubbish. Apart from the usual dirt, it has shown no signs of wear. Also, after hours of use, my hands generally feel fine, whereas on a standard keyboard they would be tired.

So, as I said, I'm torn. The keyboard has a lot going for it, but I would encourage everyone to try it first. With time you will certainly adapt to the new design, but it may take longer than expected.

WORKS on MBP (early 2008 at least)

I have an early 2008 MBP (15", 2.4GHz) and it works fine. Haven't had trouble with any of the USB ports either. I usually use an external hard drive, iPod, flash drive or M-Audio keyboard with the keyboard USB slots and haven't had any problems with them.

The only thing I'd change about it is that you need to use the Fn key to activate the F buttons. I'd prefer it if it were reversed so that you would have to hit the Fn key to change the settings such as brightness of the screen or sound level, etc. It's not that big of a deal; the only time I notice it is when I'm gaming, but you can usually reassign the key shortcuts.

Other than that, it looks real nice, it's easy to clean and I really like the feel of the keys when I'm typing. In fact, my typing seems faster on it when compared to the PC type keyboard I'm using now, at work. I suppose that's a personal preference thing though, so other people might find it difficult to type on.

    nice keyboard, good upgrade

Nice step up for the keyboard. The key strokes are really smooth because of the low profile keys. It doesnt' get dirt trapped around the keys like the older keyboard did. The preset F keys are nice. There are pics on each key that correspond to their function. Those F keys with no preset have no pic so adding a function to those is a sinch and getting the functions confused is totally gone. Instant access to lots of features w/o having to open the program or utility. great apple keyboard feature.

The only real issue I've had is the USB ports on the keyboard. I use a mac mini and the aluminum keyboard connected to the mini won't allow 2.0 devices. 2.0 use is only available when used with the aluminum iMac. my old keyboard when connected to the mac mini, allowed 2.0 device hookups (ie flash drives). I might pull my old keyboard out and compare the two. If you can give up the 2.0 feature its a good buy.

    Bends...

    • Written by from Leamington Spa

When I don't have the mouse plugged in, only wire being the wire from the Keyboard, it seems to wobble and I can hear a noise from the keyboard as it seems to have warped/flexed in the middle, as if I connect the mouse to the LEFT USB port and make the wire go underneath the white strip thing at the top, I no longer near this noise.
I THINK this is because I could've... well... did... throw my phone at the keyboard and I think I've bent it.
I'm DEFINATLEY not saying this is Apple's fault, it's mine (without a doubt). Except normal keyboard wouldn't bend that easily. (Ex: I have a chunky Windows PS/2 keyboard, it's lasted me dropping bricks on it...)
So all in all it is a good keyboard. THE KEYS DO FEEL AS CRISP AS YOU THINK! They're responsive and don't hurt my fingers as some keyboards do (Microsoft's...).

I love the thinness itself, I just wish it was stronger...

Great Keyboard, once you adapt, you can't go back

Reading some of the reviews and knowing how particular our DTP jockeys in our office are (they all loved the old black Pro keyboards), I figured I would stay away from this keyboard. However, my wife needed a new keyboard, so I bought one for her to try. At first, she did not like it, but after a few days, it really grew on her and it became her favorite keyboard. Then, someone else from the office had to use her computer, and they got to like this keyboard too. Soon, I had to buy 5 more keyboards for everyone else in the office.

The quality is excellent. It is not squeeky/flexy like regular plastic keyboards. The only reason It does not get 5 stars from me is because we have notice that the keys are starting to stain on a couple of the keyboards. This issue has been mentioned before in this forum. Black key tops would be a great option to claim the fifth star.

    good affordable keyboard

It's small-hand friendly with large, low profile keys that are still easy to reach without a lot of hand strain. It includes the numeric keyboard (unlike the Bluetooth one), which is indispensable if you work with data at all.
The spare USB port is handy but I'd rather that it used bluetooth so it was more portable. I'm really spoiled by the function keys on my Macbook so I really like having them on this keyboard.

I absolutely love the ergonomics of this keyboard. The keys are quiet and it feels like you're typing on a laptop. Typing is very smooth. I'm in love with it, it makes me actual want to type essays for school! One problem, though, is the caps lock key. It takes a serious push on it for it to respond. Most of the time when I'm typing and I try to push the caps lock key, it doesn't turn on unless I take the time to look at it and push it down harder in the very center. Otherwise, great product, I recommend it.

I love the thinness of the keyboard and the case. It allows me to type without the artificial bending up at the wrists. Looks awsome. Types just like my MacBook (which is to say wonderfully, easily). Once you learn to type on a 'small movement' keyboard, it makes you faster. And it becomes very hard to go back to a normal keyboard where you have to push WAY down on the buttons for no reason. Much faster typing on this kind of keyboard.

Only complaints after 3 weeks of use: Caps Lock sometimes doesn't 'stick'. Have to push it again, because the first time it did not light up. Also, for good wrist angle and desk usage, and being used to a MacBook, I wish the numeric keypad was a trackpad instead. As a right-handed person, the location where the numeric keypad is located is prime desk space-- either for 'mousing' or for writing. So by wasting it on a numeric keypad (I never learned to 10-key fast), I end up needing a lot more desk space, and then it's hard to center they alpha keyboard on the monitor . . .

I love this keyboard. It is thin, the keys are a little weird if you are used to standard big button keyboards. And it's not to light, it has some weight to it, and that's probably my favorite part about it. I don't feel like I am gonna punch through it.

I love it, but one word of "warning"

I love this keyboard.. and makes changing from desktop to laptop keyboards easier (I always have to adapt a bit typing on one vs. the other.)

I did find one problem. I am on system 10.4.11 running on an Intel based mini. I had to work some disk repair magic and the computer would not recognize the new keyboard for booting off the CD drive - I had to use the old keyboard to do this command. Apparently, there is a firmware update, but only works with 10.5 (or so the Apple support page said at the time.) So might be good to hang onto the old keyboard for a bit if this is your situation.

Big on Feel, Small(er) on Features

    • Written by from Provo

The thinness is sensational for this keyboard. I have a MacBook so the Keyboard was a natural extension for when I am at a desk. It really helps me type more quickly, but for you it would probably come down to a simple personal preference. I also like that the metal is cool to the touch and feels like a quality item (over the usual plastic used on keyboards).

Now for anyone using this in conjunction with a MacBook Pro or MacBook:

I also liked the inclusion of the media player keys, but they have a slight drawback in that they do not actually launch the media program (like iTunes). They just play/pause and change the track for the program once it is open. In this case, I still have to use the SizzlingKeys preference pane to launch iTunes (and use the media features when my macbook is not connected to the keyboard).

The bad here comes in a few flavors. First, the keys for spaces, expose, and dashboard are all moved. This change is really annoying because now I have to change the shortcuts for two of them and get used to the new location for the other two. Also, if I change the shortcut in the keyboard preferences, it changes the shortcut on my MacBook's keyboard too, and that is confusing!

In all, I think the form factor makes up for the loss in functionality so I gave it 4 stars.

Overall Great, some XP issues & no back lit keys

    • Written by from Whitehorse

This Keyboard is awesome the only things that I do not like about it is that it doesn't have back lit keys which are awesome for night time typing, you can use this keyboard with windows xp right out of the box and to get the print screen buttons and so on you need a program for windows called sharpkeys. With VMware or Parallels I'm positive this keyboard works 100% and I would advise turning on the F1 thru F12 since windows has issues with the "fn" key. there are some issues with the control button not being control in windows but a right click due to mac OS X, and there are no settings to change it to a windows CTRL key.

Other then these dissapointments, this keyboard is the best keyboard i've ever used for button layout crisp button pressing and size. For gaming though I would use a G15 Logitech just because of the macro and back lit keys.

    I give this keyboard a 9 out of 10
