AC adapter meltdown
Written by EC from New York
Jul 28, 2007
Hmmm...the computer is 15 months old and exactly 13 months in use. Tender, loving care has been provided, and the adapter never leaves the house.....however, base connecting point of the AC adapter's nifty magnetic head just started to smell of melted rubber; now it is looking melted and i can see the wires inside! Sure enough it will stop working shortly! Should i buy a new one? sigh.

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
Very nice power supply.
Written by DW from STAFFORD
Jul 29, 2007
The new redesigned 85W MagSafe power adapter is a welcome improvement in size over the prior stock "bricks" shipped with earlier model MacBook Pro computers. Apple engineers have beaten the design challenges of fitting the components into a smaller block, similar in size to that of the MacBook computers.
As a traveling user, I find this a worthwhile upgrade as I can use my older power adapter as a permanent fixture in my home.

Meltdown
Written by MM from NAPLES
Aug 5, 2007
My mag connector cord melted as well and became unusable. Apple stores have none available and the on=line info indicates 6 or more weeks delivery. Apple really needs to address this issue.

Meltdown after 9 months
Written by JT from Grosse Pointe Park

I am and have been very protective of all parts of my MacBook Pro, but recently the junction of the MagSafe tip and the cord to the main power unit has begun to melt and fray. This has rendered my MacBook Pro nearly unusable, as I have no way to charge it.
I hope this unit has been redesigned to safely carry the 85w of power without destroying the unit.2483 of 3248 people found this useful

Finally a good adapter: do not get hot too much, works perfectly and it has been engineered for the new Mac Book up to the huge 17". I have had no problem with this new 85W and I can recommend it to everybody: plug it in and forget it.

Power Adapter
Written by TM from Los Angeles
Aug 20, 2007
My MacBook Pro is like a boyfriend to me, and has been trated with loving care since I got it 1 year ago. That said, due to an unfortunate set of events, my old power cord was chewed by the family cat. I was disappointed that the Apple stores did not have them in stock. I ordered mine online and when it arrived it worked great...for 3 days. After that...nothing. It does not produce power of any kind to my MacBook. I am very disappointed with this new adapter. Come on Apple...get it together.

Size Matters
Written by DO from Yuma
Aug 20, 2007
True, it may not sound like a lot, but 1-inch shorter is significant when you’re stuffing your favorite "Recardo" carry-on luggage or your minimalist computer bag "Buzz" for that horrible American based flight or weekend get-away in the Dub’. I was very pleased with the smaller footprint and lower weight, not to mention to having a spare power supply. Heck, it’s no less comforting than your back-up hard drive, right?
Owning a portable/note book/MacBook Pro, etc. is pretty much about compromise so I have two batteries, two power supplies (and counting), “personal article” insurance, and the usual array of safe-guard utilities.
Ok, back on target. Apple certainly hit the sweet spot with this one by making it less of a brick, while leveraging the same casing as the Airport Express. Yeah, how very Toyota of Apple to cut production costs. Now, I’ve set my egg timer so I can measure just how long it’s going to take before I lose the little clear plastic cover for the magnetic connector. In fact, that’s my only complaint, since I would like to see a lanyard or some sort of sleeve to protect those tiny contacts during travel.

Great Product!!
Written by SH from Tawas City

I bought a second adapter for my macbook so I could have one for home and one for the office, and they both have been working excellent. And the magnetic connection is great. Since I'm a stay-home dad during the day, the kids are always tripping over the cord and instead of sending my laptop crashing to the floor, the cord just gently pops out. Very creative and great idea. And by the way, I've had no overheating or meltdown problems at all

popped as soon as I plugged it in
Written by AH from Austin
Aug 22, 2007
I ordered this online. Only took about 3 days to arrive. As soon as I plugged it in, I was met with a wonderful popping sound. Now I NEED one, and not even the Apple Store here in Austin carries them.
Apparently I have to give this thing at least 1 star to post the review. Since I didn't even get 1 second of usage out of it, I'd say that's a huge compliment.35 of 55 people found this useful

One thing worth noting is that the old (big) adapter provided an auto-switched output at either 4.6A (MacBook Pro) or 3.6A (MacBook) - great if you want to have the flexibility to plug either in. The new one does not have auto switching and will only power the MBP.
... oh and the new one seems to run cooler.29 of 49 people found this useful

Good Design
Written by RF from Evansville

I owned a G4 that ended up on the floor more than one time during the past three years. The new design is fantastic. If you own a computer and other people live in the same house with your computer the MagSafe is priceless. My G4 had a number of ugly dents and the battery never fit the way it should because of people knocking my machine to the floor as they tripped over the cord.

Great Power Supply
Written by RJ from Glenview
Aug 25, 2007
I got mine today, they claimed a 3-5 day ship time, but it was less than 24 hours before it left their warehouse. I have to say, it may only really be one inch smaller--but it feels like 2 inches. I remember first unpacking my MBP and thinking that the power adapter was HUGE. That adapter now has its spot at my desk and the new, more compact, cooler running one I got today, has its spot in my bag to go with me.
So far it works great and seems to run cooler than the larger "brick" adapter. Thanks for the update.20 of 38 people found this useful

Out of stock everywhere except...
Written by SC from Dallas
Aug 27, 2007
My dog chewed off the MagSafe connector on my old Power Adapter (the big one) & I was able to solder it, but didn't really trust it so I went in search of a new one. I have 2 Apple Stores within 3.5 miles of my house & they were both out of stock, but a CompUSA out in the 'burbs had one (they claimed 5 when I called, but I took the last one from the shelf). I plugged it in & it works, but makes an odd noise. I think I'm about to call Apple.
Oh, the guy that thinks they won't run the MacBook apparently didn't read the box: "Compatible only with MacBook Pro and MacBook computers."30 of 59 people found this useful

MagSafe DOA
Written by MW from Highland Park

I took the new smaller MagSafe with me today after waiting two weeks for Apple to deliver it. It's DOA and I'm out of town and my MacBook Pro is useless! The Apple store in ABQ doesn't have one so I'm really screwed on this. Totally useless

Wiring burns...
Written by MB from Redwood City
Sep 15, 2007
After about 1 month of fairly regular use the interface between the cable sheathing and the magnetic connector caught pulled apart. At 3 months something shorted and the wiring burned -- like a match strike.
Next time I'm going to wrap duct tape around that junction to reinforce it.
And, of course, no one within 100 miles of me (Apple Stores, Best Buy or Frys) has another 85W MagSafe in stock. It's a beautifully designed product -- just not very durable and, apparently, the supply chain management could be better.121 of 150 people found this useful

Magsafe a cat magnet?
Written by DL from Berrien Springs
Sep 19, 2007
I too had the unfortunate cat destruction, as the soft gummy cord is perfect for chewing practice. Too bad replacing the cord is more costly than replacing a cat...After the third major cord re-splicing, the cat chewed through the very base of its connection point. Game over.
Brilliant cord design, way to go Apple.10 of 27 people found this useful

WHAT? 4-6 weeks??
Written by AR from Hillsdale
Sep 24, 2007
My cord got eaten by a vaccuum cleaner. The Apple website says 4-6 weeks for shipping. WHAT? Must be a typo, a mistake! My beloved Apple would never be so ill-prepared. The devil is in the details, not to mention the power cords.
So I called around to no fewer than 8 Apple Stores (we live in NY metro area) and not a single store has these in stock. One store was CERTAIN they were getting them in "any day". Alas, two weeks later and still none in sight. I have run out of itty bitty bits of duct tape which is holding my poor frayed cord together. No option but to order and wait, and wait, while my power fades to black...
What to tell the clients? No power cords in stock and a nothing available until November! They'll assume I work on a PC. In fact, I'll be not working and on the soup line.

Replacement
Written by WP from N. Vancouver
Sep 26, 2007
I have been under the same curse that has struck many a Mac Book user, I too have had to buy a replacement power supply. Be aware that even though the magnetic attachment reduces stress on the cord it is not enough to keep it from fraying. The small sheath that holds the cable to the connector is to short and to weak to keep the cable from riding up and causing a serious fire and electrical hazard. If you own one of these be aware of the issue and try to not twist or pull the cable or you will soon need to replace this pricey item.
Dear Apple design team,
please fix this blemish on what is otherwise an untarnished system, one centimeter more of plastic could save your consumers much grief and money, which we would rather spend on cooler Apple toys than a cord.
