Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
Has worked fine for years
Written by IB from Blacksburg
Jun 1, 2009
I've had my adaptor for three yrs, w/ no problems whatsoever. (As another review points out, I disconnect the adaptor by gently tugging the cord upward or downward, *not* pulling it straight out, which requires much more strength, and I could see that doing so would eventually pull the wires apart.)
I do *not* use the clip-out prongs for wrapping the cord around. That inessential part probably wouldn't stand up to excessive wear.96 of 104 people found this useful

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
An Excellent power adapter
Written by JC from Powell River
May 6, 2009
I've had my MacBook Pro since January 2007, it came with me just about every day out in the oil and gas fields here in Northern Canada, in some of the worst conditions that most Mac owner wouldn't think about taking their computers. Dragged from home to hotel to job site to a high pressure pumping unit caboose.
I have not had an issue with the Power adaptor at all. Works perfect, save my MacBook Pro from hitting the ground many times. I take care in wrapping up the cord and storing it securely in my case.
How people are getting frayed cords and such, it's beyond me.92 of 108 people found this useful

No one I know has a shoddy cord
Written by CF from San Francisco

I found it really odd seeing all the bad reviews with melted wires. I've never had issue with mine. Actually I love it compared to the really horrid plug they used to use in the older powerbooks -- I went through 3-4 of those and destroyed my power connected inside the computer.
I also know dozens of people who own macbooks and none of them have had an issue with melting cords. I'm not saying that some aren't having problems, but it does make me wonder if it's not just a vocal minority.89 of 103 people found this useful

These work fine.

These work fine. I haven't seen one fail in under 3 years yet. If you don't mistreat your gear then you shouldn't have problems. We have ~25 Macbook/Pro's and have had one power adapter failure. The reason it's rated so badly on here is because the only people who have written reviews are the ones that have had failures. If it works fine, why write a review??? Right? Right.

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
So far so good

I have had my power cord for two years. I pack it up and take it home everyday of work. I've never had it fray or melt. I know I don't use the storage horns, instead I roll up my cord. That might be why it has lasted fine. But overall, the magnet feature has definitely saved my Macbook Pro from falling off the desk.

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
Never a Problem with this Power Adapter
Written by CF from Concord
May 1, 2009
I find some of the reviews expressing problems with this adapter interesting. Having travelled internationally with my MacBook Pro for the past few years (mainly asia) plugging in to a variety of electrical wall plugs and varying currents and I have still not had any need to purchase a new adapter as a result of any defects or wiring problems or meltdowns. I have never found any problem with any function of the original adapter, or its replacement (only due to loss). I found the negative ratings fascinating and felt compelled to write a quick review based on my own experiences.

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
Mine was good until it was stolen.

I have a MBP 17" that worked well until I unplugged the power supply quickly after plugging I had just plugged it in to recharge my battery. Now the computer is in some kind of limp mode, where the computer will turn off (not shut down, but actually just turn off, causing me to lose whatever I was working on) if I push the computer too hard or turn up the brightness on my screen. The problem I have is not the power adapter, because I've tried other MBP 17" power adapters and got the same results.
My adapter was fine, though the plastic coating was a little short, where it came out of the brick toward the magsafe plug (not right at the magsafe plug, where most people seem to have a problem). I just pushed it back in and never unwrapped that part of the cable all the way, and the problem never happened again. While the brick would get pretty hot, my adapter worked for more than two years. I assume whoever stole it has it working well too. I hope it melts on them, though I doubt it, because the person I believe stole it has a 15 rather than a 17.
I LOVE the magsafe adapter. I believe it has saved my power plug at my computer a dozen times or more. People forget what the benefit is (take it for granted). I've heard of people who had broken their power plugs on their computers in the past. That's a VERY expensive fix, especially when comparing it to a replacement power adaptor.
Kudos to Apple for inventing such a wonderful, safer, less worrisome power supply. I feel much more free to move around and really use my notebook computer with it plugged in, because of the magsafe power supply.
I don't think that $80 for such an amazing device is expensive at all. THANK YOU APPLE.77 of 85 people found this useful

Am I just lucky?
Written by SS from Indianapolis

To me, the MagSafe has been a great adapter. I'm going to get a second one though so I don't have to be handling it too often. Does that mean I am fairly solicitous of the thing? Maybe so. I guess after decades of using electric teaching equipment I learned that the cord is always fairly delicate - second only to the bulb if it has one! Treating the cord gently just "goes with the territory." No crimps. No pulling on the wire. No winding it too tight. And thanks to the magnetic connector - no accidental disconnection by my active dog has broken a wire!

***PERFECT! Great design!

I don't know what all these "meltdown" reviewers are talking about...I own 4 macs, an iPhone, and an iPod ALL of them using the same cords, and NONE of them have ever frayed or word. I am a photographer and my laptops are out in the field a lot, and the portability and out-of-the-box ability to attach an extension cord is phenomenal. Maybe all these other reviewers should treat their expensive electronic gear a little nicer =/ And stop giving laptops to kids who don't know how to take care of them...

We all use Mac Book Pros; I've probably bought 15 or so of these for use in different office and home settings at my company and they seem very well designed and solid to me. I can only suspect that the people with fraying problems are really abusing them.

I have read many other reviews about this product before purchasing the power adapter. I bought one and have had it for almost two years with no problems. I would have to believe that people that are having problems with the product are not using it properly. Take care of your stuff and it will last much longer.

please read if your magsafe melted-go to apple store
Written by ES from celebration
Oct 30, 2007
Yesterday while I was charging my macbook pro my magsafe melted and actually sparked a little bit which I will admit was a little scary. I’ve had my computer for about 14 months and have always taken good care of it. I came here and started reading the horror stories about wait times and thought I was doomed. I called and ordered a replacement and got the same 2-week song and dance I had been reading about so I decided to take it to my local apple store. I was seen immediately and given a new power adapter even though I was OUTSIDE my warranty and DO NOT have apple care. They apologized to me and said they would be happy to replace the product as it was an obvious safety hazard. I signed a form and am now typing on the same computer I thought would be unusable for the next two weeks. I was born into an apple family and have been happy with their products all the way back to the 2ci which I used as a kid. Thank you Apple for doing the right thing with my power cord…now make sure these people get their new ones so you don’t have a riot on your hands.

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
2 1/2 years of steady use, no problems
Written by JM from Phoenix
Apr 11, 2009
My power adapter has had lots of use (I rarely use the mac on battery power if an A/C outlet is available). It travels in the car, the RV, via plane, and all over the house, as well as to job sites. I've never had a problem, nor is there any sign of wear or melting on my cables, as was reported by others. So far, so good! I'm always careful, and it is always plugged in to a surge suppressor in a ventilated area, which may keep it from overheating. I also keep the laptop on a ventilated rack, which keeps the laptop from getting so hot. I put the computer to sleep any time I'm not using it. Perhaps this combination of things has worked to protect the cord.

I bought an extra 85W adapter for my MBP since I use it at home and work. Have had none of the problems others have reported. It does get warm, almost hot to the touch, but nothing like the underside of the laptop itself. Going on 2 years with both 85W adapters with no issues.

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
3 years on 5 adapters with no problems at all
Written by SB from Evergreen
Aug 14, 2009
I have 5 of these adapters, 1 in my office, 1 in a data center where I and others work with MacBooks, 1 in our server room, 1 at my recliner, and 1 in my notebook bag. I've connected and disconnected them thousands of times, many times per day as I usually use my MacBook Pro with the power connected. I've never had any of the meltdown, seeing wires, smelling burning issues with any of them in 3 years of use. One thing I have done is never to yank the cable off the mag port or pull it by the wire. I grab the white plastic base and tilt it off, breaking the magnetic seal. Maybe that's the secret? All I know is that 5 of them, some being used by at least 3 different techs, have had no problems at all.

I have had my 17-inch MacBook Pro for just over a year, and I've been using the same power adapter for that long. If it weren't for the fact that my puppy chewed through the cord, I would be using the same one still!
