Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
No problems with 85W MagSafe Power Adapter
Written by RT from San Luis Obispo

I have used this power adapter with my 15" MacBook Pro for nearly 3 years now with no problems. Mostly it is used at home at my desk but I have traveled with it a number of times and it seems to have held up well. I am careful when I unplug or disconnect it from my laptop as well as when I coil the wiring cords to place it in my laptop carrying case. I have not noticed any unusual heating near the connections.

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
Perfect

I'm now 6 months into my life with my new MBP. Why I ever left Mac for the other system, I'll never know. I'm home now and I'm here to stay! My cord sees a lot of use. I bring it with me daily to work, and use it in a couple different locations in my home while I'm studying, so I'm plugging and unplugging it several times a day. I also leave it plugged in all night AND i use the "ears" on the adapter block to lightly and gently wrap the cord. I have never had any problem at all and the mag-safe adapter has protected my couple-thousand-dollar investment from disaster more than once, what with three small kids and a dog running about. Yes it gets hot. They all do, from ALL manufacturers.

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
My Macbook Pro
Written by RW from Chicago
Nov 22, 2009
Just wanted to pop in and give props to Apple and my MacBook Pro.
I have a 17 inch model that was purchased for me for Christmas in 2006, and I have to tell you that my laptop has to be the most durable and efficient laptop I've ever owned. My macBook Pro is 3 years old and is still faster than my almost brand new windows platform desktop... hands down. the only issue I have with my laptop is that it doesn't hold a charge too long any more. it'll read 100% charge but only last for about 15 or 20 minutes before it shuts off. i guess it may be due to the age of the battery and probably because i wasn't conditioning the battery (I wasn't aware of how to do it until a couple of months ago). but over-all. I have no problem with the AC power adapter itself, it still powers the unit just fine and it too is almost 3 years old.
Thanks again to the people at Apple for making a great laptop computer in the MacBook Pro I love it.

1 Year of Use, No Meltdown
Written by MH from Middletown
Nov 20, 2009
I've been using one of these for a full year without any issues.
It's almost always plugged in, and powered, as my Macbook Pro is always sitting in the same spot on my desk 95% of the time. No signs of meltdown or cable fraying anywhere.
On older ones, I did notice that - if you bend the wire in a bad direction at the same spot as the clip that is used to roll up the chord, it can cut through the rubber covering, so BE CAREFUL AND PAY ATTENTION when you're rolling the chord up. I'd guess several meltdown complaints are from people who abused their chords and did a bad job of rolling them up, vs. some inherent defect.3 of 6 people found this useful

I'm surprised to read all the negative reviews. I have first generation intel Macbook Pro over 3+ years and own 2 of these power adapters, one at home and another at work. Both of them have been working well for me. It gets hot at times but never failed.

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
Never a Problem.

We use these on our office lap tops. Never a problem. We are careful in handling our equipment though. (never just throwing an unwound adapter in a bag, yanking it out from the middle of the cord etc...) Although we haven't had any problems the unit does not look like it would take a lot of rough treatment, so maybe that's the problem some people are having?
They are warm when working, but not hot. One should avoid plugging an adapter like this into very light gauge cheap extension cords or overloaded plugs (same as power tools, great way to burn out electrical appliances)4 of 9 people found this useful

The best power adapter EVER!

I am absolutely in love with this power adapter. I love how it's magnetic so it pops out with a significant pull. Also, neither the computer nor the person falls down with the cord if someone trips on it. Moreover, the cord wraps neatly around itself. This cord is genius, yet another great Apple product!

My wife and I have three Mac laptops between us (2 MacBook Pro models and 1 MacBook) and we also have three 85W power adapters and one 60W. All work wonderfully and all are more than 2 years old. I have noticed that they do get hot, but this is usually when I'm working the computer very hard (and the battery is usually always fully charged when I notice the heat.) I think it's important NOT to leave your computer plugged into the power adapter all the time. When the battery is charged UNPLUG IT! Let your battery cycle through it will have a much longer and happier life. Also, treat the cords properly and they well last as long as the computer. I think a lot of the negative ratings for this product are due to failure of the product as a result of poor handling. Also, the MagSafe DC connector has saved me MANY TIMES.

I have an original MacBook Core Duo from 2006 and both the original power adapter and an 85W one I bought later as a backup/leave at home/work are both in perfect working order with no signs of the fraying or meltdowns mentioned in other reviews. I try to never stress the cables, I do use the cable storage ears but leave the cable where it exits the power block loose while I wrap the rest. I also don't pull the magsafe connector out but lift it free. Otherwise I don't take particular care, they live in the bottom of my backpack most between work and home and one or the other gets wrapped and unwrapped twice a day.

So long as you don't Wind it tightly. It works fine. Don't use the built in cable wind, but instead make loops and use velcro ties to hold it. This will put less pressure on the ends, thus saving the life of the cord. Also, when you disconnect, lift the magnet area up, it comes of easier. If you just pull you will ruin the end.
I have had mine for 4-5 years, with no problems. Just about to replace it for the first time!16 of 17 people found this useful

I've had my Macbook Pro for about 3 months now. I've had no issues with the power adaptor and will be buying another one soon so I don't have to keep lugging it to work.
The adaptor for my Powerbook still works great after 3 years, never any problems at all with it.15 of 18 people found this useful

I have used two of these power adaptors for over three years with constant travel usage. I have not ever had any problems. Since the item is a magnetic port it is best to keep "paper clips and staples" away from area. I have many times tripped over the cord or had my son trip on a cord. Nothing bad happens and the cord just comes unplugged. The person doesn't even trip. This is a great invention.

I have had my macbook pro and the original charger a little over two years now. It has not left my side once, which includes travel to Japan and the continental United State, I live in Hawaii. I also travel inter-island a lot. I constantly recharge my battery, sometimes three times a day. i am on my third battery already. My winder broke off about 8 months after buying the computer. The only other issue that I am currently facing is that the prongs don't come out anymore unless I bang them on the table. I know thats not the best thing to do but it still charges.
I think if you are experiencing trouble with your charger, double check with the online trouble shooting to see what could be the cause. Some things Apple will replace for free, especially if it is some fault on their end. I don't understand how the model charger I am using only lasts one year, because I beat my charger up and it is still going.46 of 50 people found this useful

I have had mine for 2 1/2 years with tons of traveling. I only have the original one and it goes back and forth to school and my classrooms all day long. My kids at home pull it around from room to room too. Still working great. I did have problems with the old ones getting yanked but this magsafe is great. I would be upset if I had to replace it but I think three years is acceptable and I haven't replaced it yet. Probably should be cheaper than $79 bucks. By the way is it me or does everybody just go 5 stars or 1?

These people must be treating their cords very roughly to have them break apart. I had my cord for over 2 years. Mine would be fine also if my puppy didn't chew through it. Must be some tasty plastic or something. I think the people that use cable winder on the side of the power brick have issues. I had a friend that this happened to. Once he got a new one he hasn't used the winder and has not had any issues.

I have had my 17-inch MacBook Pro for just over a year, and I've been using the same power adapter for that long. If it weren't for the fact that my puppy chewed through the cord, I would be using the same one still!
