wow it hasnt even been 8 months!
Written by JR from Winnipeg
Apr 3, 2009
so id like to send my condolences to the macbook pro adapter family. the passing away of my 7.5 month old 85W magsafe power adapter died quietly last night while i charged my macbook pro. seriously? apple common, im a devoted apple customer, do not let me think twice about converting back to windows... please, either you guys aren't paying the engineers responsible for creating adapters or you're hiring the wrong people! FIX THIS PROBLEM ONCE AND FOR ALL, SO YOU CAN FINALLY WITNESS A 5 STAR RATING FOR ONCE, that is all, and just to let you know, im accountable to pay for a new adapter (which will probably last for another 7.5 months or less :( ) and shipping charges! THANK YOU APPLE! :S

Get it some love...
Written by EK from Valley City

Wow, according to the reviews I am unique in that I love the power adaptors for the Mac Book Pros. I have had my 15" Mac Book Pro for almost 3 years and am just now ordering a new one and to list the abuse my first one took would take pages. The MagSafe is a feature I would not live without and the overall build is sturdy and takes abuse from my 3 year old and my dog. I only dropped one star because of the heat it gives off, but it isn't that bad. I work with other Dell's and Lenovo laptops all day and comparing power adaptors, Macs are by far the best!!

Apple misses on power adapter
Written by MN from lebanon

Sadly, the MagSafe Power Adapter is a "miss" for Apple. Now on my third adapter, I'm finding it hard to pay $80 for a replacement. The first adapter lasted almost two and half years. The second adapter, less than an year. The first cord broke at the MagSafe port, the second frayed at adapter. Apple definitely needs to re-engineer this product!

We bought this Mac Pro less than 2 years ago as a graduation gift. It is great but the power supply is WAY too fragile for the VERY STEEP price.

Very disappointed

Had no other choice, I had to buy a new MagSafe. But after 2 weeks, the new MagSafe broke-down and had to be changed!!! A product this expensif should at least be a little resistant, and not crash after 2 weeks.

2 Power Adapters in 6 months
Written by HL from Nacogdoches

I've had two of these power adapters break in six-months, and now I'm on my third. One became frayed at the power output and the other one had a meltdown and quit working. These things are poorly made and unsafe.

Power cord need reinforcement
Written by DW from SAN JOSE
Mar 22, 2009
I travel often between home and school (work) and have to have my adapter with me at all times. Thus, I have to plug and unplug and wrap many times. The thin wire from the adapter to the mag connector is becoming detached from the adapter. Apple needs to address this.

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
needs a redesign
Written by NN from Nørresundby
Mar 22, 2009
I'm on my second power adapter, now and I see it is failing too.
I'm very disapointed with this product. I expect more from Apple. It needs a redesign with a power cord that doesn't come lose from the adapter or the magsafe connector.
And i would be very cool if it came with a two pin euro 45 cable plug for Denmark. Since in most places three pin plugs aren't available.12 of 54 people found this useful

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
Great idea, but frays and overheats
Written by GG from Studio City
Mar 18, 2009
I'm also very careful with my computer and power cable (pulling the magsafe connector itself, not the cable, when unplugging, etc), and, as others have reported, I'm looking for a replacement because the connection between the cable and magsafe connector has inexplicably frayed, causing it to become *very* hot, and to fail to provide power if the cable is at the wrong angle. The only reason I've given the product 2 stars (instead of one) is for Apple's usual good design of the adapter itself, with convenient collapsable hooks around which to wrap the cable, and the magsafe connector itself. But, if it's going to fall apart with careful use, none of that matters much.

meltdown
Written by JG from Santa Fe
Mar 17, 2009
yeah, after almost a year... my power adaptor has all but quit working and shows signs, ie: hot as a firecracker, of melting down... still works intermittently for now, though. the whole mag connector is a lame design in an attempt to fix a non problem. go back to the old powerbook adaptor, which, coincidentally i'm still using on my 5 year old powerbook g4.

The Mag connector cable...
Written by JH from Monticello
Mar 16, 2009
I see that lots of people have problems with a thin cord melting. I just bought a 2.66Ghz MacBook Pro and the cord between the computer and the transformer is much thicker than previous Apple notebooks. It seems thicker than the cable in the image even, which makes me believe that they did fix the problem some people were having. The cable on the adapter for my old iBook G4 is about half the thickness, and even though it used less power, it still seemed flimsy. The thicker cable makes it only slightly harder to wind up, but the durability more than makes up for it.

No problems over 3 years
Written by CM from Ottawa

I did not have any of the problems reported in the reviews despite doing a lot of the things you should not do (yank it off the computer, tripping over the cord, etc). Don't see any wear on the magnetize connection either - looks pretty good to me so far. If you are rough enough, I am sure you could damage it but in normal everyday use, it is standing up very well.

No problems here after 3 years
Written by JH from Cary
Mar 13, 2009
I've read nothing but negative reviews on this. 841 at the time I read. Okay, so since most people don't record their experiences unless they're bad, I see around 841 of the hundreds of thousands sold. Not too bad. My current charger I bought with my first generation MBP is still working fine. Unfortunately, my 84 year old dad tripped over the cord yesterday and caused the cord to break (magsafe side was damaged since my cord was caught under my chair) - so yes, I will now need to replace mine, but not because of Apple. I have no hesitancy to order another one.

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
A good product bogged by a simple design flaw
Written by SC from White Pigeon
Mar 13, 2009
In the first weeks of having my computer I had 2 opinions of this adapter: the magnetic connection is a genius design. And within 2 weeks I knew the thinner length of cord would be a problem.
For the reviewer who stated these issues are from 'mistreatment', obviously you have never moved your MacBook. This is a *laptop* cord- the manufacturer must expect this cord to be wrapped up for transit and design it accordingly.
It's the common sense side of engineering/product design- and as an engineer and designer, the flaw is quite obvious. I only travel with mine occasionally, and have always, always left quite a large loop where the smaller section of cord comes out because it is such an obvous weak spot. For some it may be an abuse issue, but I suspect many of these reviews are not. I was lucky to have had my MacBook Pro for over 2 years before I had to replace this adapter- had it traveled with me I'm sure it would have happened much sooner. It is simply unrealistic to expect users to have their cords stretched perfectly straight in all conditions- and all it takes is a small curve over time to cause it to wear, the coating to crack and the cord to fray.
Worse, the fix is relatively simple- the ends of that portion of cord need to be supported. I am not upset that I needed to replace a computer component, but the design could be MUCH better- and that level of design is, I think, what their loyal users have come to expect.

Please just connect the adapter and cord together better. This is my third cord in a matter of months. It really is getting out of had. Now I have to buy a third cord for 79 dollars. I paid for my mac, I shouldn't have to pay almost 80 dollars every three months. PLEASE fix the adaptor and cord connection, they always break.

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
Absolute Junk!
Written by JL from Elgin
Mar 10, 2009
My computer is about a year old. It's bad enough that the dvd drive has gone out three times and the battery will only hold a charge for 40 minutes. At least that is covered by the warranty. But now the cord is garbage. It's extremely poorly built and has pulled out of where it connects to the block. There is at least a 1/2-inch of exposed wired and fraying metal strands. In addition, the magnet is about the weakest thing I've seen and falls out on it's own. I never roll up the cord. It basically sits on my desk or my lap. My old ibook was virtually problem free, but this new macbook pro is a complete piece of junk. I and I have two friends as well who are experiencing more problems than me! If these things weren't so expensive I wouldn't have a problem. I expect better quality when I pay twice a normal laptop. With all the problems I've had with this computer it will be very difficult buying another one. I love the operating system, good thing there are people out there who have figured out how to install it on a Dell. If Apple doesn't get their act together, I'm going to do the same.

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
3 Cords and another needed
Written by LJ from Kelowna
Mar 10, 2009
I'm on my third power adapter and need another one. I am very disappointed with the fact that it seems like such a simple fix by Apple....both ends of the cable should have a support piece, that limits the wear of the cable. The magnetic end of the cable on my first adapter frayed within months of purchasing my MacBook Pro (I also purchased two iMac's at that time!). The second was purchased shortly thereafter and frayed at the other end. I don't dare move the third from where it's plugged in because it too is frayed at the adapter end and is hanging on with it's last breath...i will have to get another, but I can't bring myself to purchase a fourth until absolutely necessary!!!!

Same Old Story - Burnt up (literally) - Prematurely IMHO
Written by MB from Alpharetta

$80 is not a terrible price for an AC adapter, but have you dismantled a bad one? There are GOBS of heat-transfer grease throughout the internals. The heat sink like copper wrapper is even soldered to the main logic board. Make it larger, add a fan, do something - this all beauty, no function attitude has got to go! Makes me question the power department in general - i.e. is that new battery in the 17" really half as good as it is touted to be?

Hey Apple! Ever hear of strain relief?
Written by KC from Riverton
Mar 6, 2009
All Apple needs to do is add a strain relief where the cord comes out of the adapter and I'd give their power adapter 5 stars. I went through 3 AC adapters on my iBook and am about to buy my second one for my 18 month old MacBook Pro. All of them came apart where the cord meets the adapter. Macs are so very well made. Why does Apple ship a piece of junk AC adapter with them?
