Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
Another meltdown
Written by DD from Iowa City
Jun 8, 2009
The cord melted where it goes into the adapter. It looks to me like this is happening to a lot of them. Mac users should be warned and the adapters replaced. You cannot find them at the resellers. Response?

Starting to go ....

Mine was fine for 2.5 years, but its now starting to get hot where the cord meets the brick, and battery flickers from charging to discharging.
(So to all you smug people who say "no problem with mine" ... your time will come!)26 of 108 people found this useful

I'll join the rest in the rant of "TOTAL MELTDOWN"
Written by JF from fall river

I bought my Macbook in the spring of '06 and I guess I can consider myself lucky that it just now melted and malfunctioned at the base of the brick??? It actually sparked at me today before it completely burnt out (I had previously taped the wire a certain way to maintain the connection!) I do love my Macbook dearly but I find it a little ridiculous that there are so many people clearly not happy with these chargers and Apple still has not addressed the issue AND now I have to spend another $100 or not use my machine at all. Come on Apple!

Love and defend my Macs at every turn, but the power chord on my less than 2 year old macbook just bit it with the melted/exposed wires on the mag end. It is dangerous and outrageous that to replace it will cost 100$

I Have taken good care of my macbook pro, and had no problems until now that the junction of the MagSafe tip and the cord to the main power unit has begun to melt and fray. I have no way of recharging the unit!!!!!

We all use Mac Book Pros; I've probably bought 15 or so of these for use in different office and home settings at my company and they seem very well designed and solid to me. I can only suspect that the people with fraying problems are really abusing them.

Has worked fine for years

I've had my adaptor for three yrs, w/ no problems whatsoever. (As another review points out, I disconnect the adaptor by gently tugging the cord upward or downward, *not* pulling it straight out, which requires much more strength, and I could see that doing so would eventually pull the wires apart.)
I do *not* use the clip-out prongs for wrapping the cord around. That inessential part probably wouldn't stand up to excessive wear.96 of 104 people found this useful

I'm on my first one, and am going to replace it now as the cord has frayed. It started by the magnet, and then into the adapter. I've used it pretty hard I guess.. I suppose this could be better. $100.00 seems a bit pricey.

No one I know has a shoddy cord

I found it really odd seeing all the bad reviews with melted wires. I've never had issue with mine. Actually I love it compared to the really horrid plug they used to use in the older powerbooks -- I went through 3-4 of those and destroyed my power connected inside the computer.
I also know dozens of people who own macbooks and none of them have had an issue with melting cords. I'm not saying that some aren't having problems, but it does make me wonder if it's not just a vocal minority.89 of 103 people found this useful

I am now about to buy the THIRD power cord for my worthless Macbook Pro.
The wires become exposed, and then melt. I'm lucky my house hasn't burned down yet.

85W mag safe power adapter works fine.

My wife and I bought new Macs around Christmas time 2008. One 15 inch MacBook Pro one 13 inch MacBook. We use the Macs many times throughout the day. We have one adapter upstairs and one downstairs. They mostly lie on desks until we plug in the Macs.
I just checked both adapters and they look fine, esp. the insulation and the mag safe end. Never had one get hot.91 of 102 people found this useful

Great computer, love all my Mac stuff past and present. I started with using an Apple and several since (Power Mac, Power PC, iMac, G4, and more). I love Mac always will, but why can't we get a power source that lasts at least two years? The product works great until about 13 months into the operation and the covering starts to crack and fall apart. Another 80+ bucks.

Another poorly designed Apple product! I got the laptop for my wife 16 mnds ago and just noticed now at the end of the AC adapter's cable with magnetic connector it has melted down the cable and power no longer goes to the laptop. I can see the wires inside the cable and it all smells of melted rubber. I need to buy a new one but instead I think I just get her to sell the laptop. I don't feel safe with this, and paying for a faulty designed AC adapter $100!!! This is crazy!

Nearly lost my home as a result of its failure
Written by CB from Codorus
May 24, 2009
I plugged in my Macbook Pro while I was getting dressed this morning. When I walked into my room, I smelled something overheating. I found the cord's bare wires (at the Mag end) emitting sparks and burning the plastic insulating the power cord. The plastic had melted to my bed and begun to burn my comforter. There had been no prior indication that that cord had been compromised. Needless to say I am very lucky to have my home and very displeased by this product's performance. Is there another option?

Wire connecting to adapter is poorly designed!
Written by ES from Waupaca
May 19, 2009
It doesn't take much for the sheath covering the wire to weaken and come apart where it attaches to the adapter. Love my Mac but think this is a major flaw. Apple should really replace these at no cost with an adapter that is designed much better!

Weak outer sheath between Power Supply and Macbook
Written by NB from COBH

I have also experienced the same problem of outer sheath failing along with a slight failing on the inner sheath and some arcing. Have had to purchase a very expensive replacement.... not very impressed.
A heavier cable is needed, if not a complete redesign.
The magsafe idea is great.... just needs a new cable. As Apple is a premium product this should be looked at asap!56 of 136 people found this useful

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
Needs sturdier plastic
Written by CF from Monmouth
May 11, 2009
I have a macbook pro which is 2.5 years old, and my first power cord lasted about a year or so. It developed a short right behind where the magsafe connector attaches to the cord. I am responsible for fourteen 3-yr-old teacher macbooks at our school, and we have had 4 cords fail by the plastic splitting and exposing the wires down by the brick. From other comments, it appears that my first cord was a fluke, but the cord needs to be reinforced down where it enters the brick -- when wrapping the cord around the flip-up holders it makes a sharp bend, and that eventually breaks the plastic.
But, anyway, I feel bad complaining at all! My previous laptop was a compaq with a right-angle power plug, and the force of plugging and unplugging broke the solder joints that attached the connector to the motherboard. So, after just 20 months of use, the PC was useless. We have now fixed it, after a couple of trips to the Radio Shack, completely taking apart the computer (always a bit hair-raising with a laptop!), some redesign and some jury-rigging with speaker wire, soldering on a new connector, building a new power cord...
The magsafe connector is a fabulous invention that doesn't just protect the computer from being yanked off of a table, it also protects the power connector from being wriggled off of the motherboard -- a huge achilles heel of all other laptops. It just needs a little redesign where the cord inserts into the brick, and probably up where it inserts into the magsafe connector, too. A tenth of a penny more in plastic, and it will be a cord worthy of the brilliant connector it is attached to.29 of 108 people found this useful
