    OKAY. . . WHATS UP WITH THE FLIMSY POWER CORD? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Written by MS from Desert Hot Springs

    Sep 16, 2009

Let's make this SHORT and SWEET. . . every Powerbook & MacBook Pro that I've ever owned has had trouble with the Power Adapter disintegrating at the crucial point between the plug-in and the cord. What's UP with buying an EXTREMELY expensive (GORGEOUS) fine piece of craftsmanship, with a WIMPY power supply cord????? And the cost to replace it is FORBIDDEN! ! ! Sorry APPLE. . . you gotta treat us faithful oldtimers a little better than that. We expect nothing less than PERFECTION on these little things. Especially when we dont blink an eye on throwing money your way to use your products!

    No problems, works fine

I've had my Macbook Pro for about 3 months now. I've had no issues with the power adaptor and will be buying another one soon so I don't have to keep lugging it to work.

The adaptor for my Powerbook still works great after 3 years, never any problems at all with it.

    Bad cord

    Written by JW from Seneca

    Sep 14, 2009

The cord is separating from the magnetic tip now it says not charging half the time I plug it in. It is BS that a replacement costs so freakin much! Just because I bought an apple doesn't mean I'm made of money!

    Might as well buy 'AA's

    Written by WW from Victoria

I have had three of these since purchasing my MacBook Pro three years ago. It is a wonder how Apple can produce products so intuitive and user friendly and not understand basic logic. If you put a big heavy brick at the end of a thin, wimpy, cord it is going to pull the wires out of itself eventually.

In terms of function I will say this. It does deliver what it promises: it charges your computer, other then that, it is a glossy, overpriced wire. If I have to buy a new one of these every year, it could at least be under $50, but it is not even under $100.

    Worst apple hardware ever.

Works well, but not a quality product.

    Written by CS from Hattiesburg

    Sep 10, 2009

I love all of my Apple products, and am a very big fan of the company. I just purchased my first replacement adapter for my MacBook Pro after one year of ownership, not because my adapter quit working, but because the rubber around the cable that connects the MagSafe cord to the adapter is coming out of its connection... It's just sliding out for some reason. I can see the wires that are underneath the protective covering, and thought I should probably purchase a replacement before I electrocute myself. I've never had this happen to my PC charger, and this is something about which Apple should be quite embarrassed. They make superior products, but some "accessories" are quite sub-par in quality.

I have used two of these power adaptors for over three years with constant travel usage. I have not ever had any problems. Since the item is a magnetic port it is best to keep "paper clips and staples" away from area. I have many times tripped over the cord or had my son trip on a cord. Nothing bad happens and the cord just comes unplugged. The person doesn't even trip. This is a great invention.

I have three of the 85W supplies on my desk that have all failed. This is simply a bad design of the strain relief for these power cables at both ends.

    poor design

    Written by MM from Oakdale

    Sep 6, 2009

These power adapters are about as flimsy as can be. My first one stopped working within my warranty period with no signs of physical damage and Apple replaced it free of charge. Three months later the replacement charger has stopped charging as well. Apple really needs to fix this issue.

    No problems, stop whining

    Written by SW from Candler

    Sep 4, 2009

Only reason i give 4 stars is because overall the magsafe is not as durable and sturdy as it could be. Mine doesn't get hot, isn't frayed and is well over 2 years old. Everyone complaining sounds like the people who come into my cell phone store and say that they don't understand why their phones dont work after they dropped them in the swimming pool. Seriously! Baby Spit, a laptop sitting on a bed? If you are dumb enough to use your laptop on a comforter then you deserve to have a fried logic board, not just a messed up power adapter. Get real and get some reasonable expectations....Power supplys are a WEARABLE ITEM, not designed to last for years and years of daily use and travel. Stop complaining about a nice product or get a Dell.

    Warming

Written by DS from Mount Laurel

    Sep 2, 2009

The adapter itself occasionally gets very warm to the touch when I am gaming or watching movies with it in place. It has not interrupted service and I have not noticed any melting of any part, but I am aware of the potential when it's in use. When the computer is plugged in and charging, and not in use, it does not seem to get warm.

    Good design but questionable quality...

    Written by CH from Henderson

On the design side, I love this thing. The magnet has even saved me twice from sending my machine flying. So there's that.

That said, I'm on my third adapter for my Oct. 2008 MacBook Pro. Oddly, I never had an issue with the one on my original MacBook, but the ones on the Pro haven't been that great to me.

The Apple Store replaced them without a hitch so, in kudos to Apple on that. (I'm here writing this review because I was looking up the price as I probably have to purchase another one tomorrow since I left my nearly brand new adapter out of town. Bleh.)

    Inexcusably unreliable.

Written by KC from San Francisco

    Aug 30, 2009

In general, I love Apple products - I have an absolutely indestructible MacBook Pro that is still going strong after almost four years, various iPods, etc. However, I find the quality of this charger to be incredibly (and confusingly) subpar. I use my MacBook essentially as a desktop, so the cord gets quite minimal wear and tear. I am on my third charger in two years - two melted down and started sending off visible sparks, the first one shocking me. Despite being out of the warranty, an Apple store replaced the first one for free when I plugged it in in the store and it started sparking. However, I have now had to buy several, which adds up quickly, and I need another as the most recent iteration has now come apart at the meeting of the Magsafe and the cord, leaving exposed wiring that is also fraying. This is incredibly frustrating - if Apple cannot get this stupid charger right, they should license someone else to make one for them!

Used properly ALL the time - piece of JUNK

    Written by JB from Acworth

    Aug 28, 2009

The person who said that these things malfunction because people misuse them is incorrect. My MacBook Pro stays on my desk all the time on a stand. Never moved from that location. Plugged into the wall. Cord not jostled about. Don't have kids or pets messing with it. Nothing. Yet it melted and frayed at both ends of the cord - both by the magnet, AND by the other end of the long cord. It did this about a year after I'd had the computer. The big square "boxy" part gets so hot you can't even touch it. I have ordered a replacement as I am afraid to even use the darned thing anymore.

So...just wanted to clear that up about people supposedly misusing or abusing these adapters - because that simply isn't the case here. They just made a piece of junk and apparently haven't improved upon it judging from these reviews. I wish I had an alternative.

Good product, I love the Magsafe because I have needed it a couple of times

    Written by DS from Riverside

I have had a macbook pro 17 for about three or four months now. I have not had any problems with the charger that came with the computer. My Mother has had a Macbook pro 15 for over two years without any problems with the charger either. No problems at all. For the people that are having problems with their chargers I need to ask if you are leaving the block in a bag or somewhere it cannot get ventilation. The block can get hot and needs the air flow around it but other than that I have not found any problem with any of mine. The heat is the only reason I gave the charger four stars.

I have four of these charging blocks, One for each computer at home and one for each computer on the go. I have not seen any fraying or poor craftsmanship from these units.

For the people who do not see the point of the magsafe connection try using the computer on a couch with other people around ro at a public place on a table. It is very useful.

    Elegant but not sturdy

    Written by PG from ARLINGTON

    Aug 25, 2009

My 85W MagSafe power adapter hasn't failed yet, but it is so obviously just as flimsy at both connection points that I'm sure it will soon; I find it inexcusable that Apple seems still not to license third-party manufacturers to make a sturdier power supply for the MacBook Pro -- it's typical of the arrogant Apple approach to manufacture, which is to emphasize elegance at the expense of sturdiness. I have an older MacBook as well as my newer MacBook Pro, and so far I've had two 60W MagSafe power adapter fail -- and I've been very careful with them, and certainly never pull the adapter out of the computer rather than gently swiveling it out. After the first one failed, I bought an extra one as well as the replacement, so at any point I am sure to have a power supply when one fails. For my previous Mac laptops, I also expected a relatively high failure rate for the power supply, but at least then I could purchase a third party version that held up better as a replacement. For me, the MagSafe solves a problem I don't have -- in my 18 or so years of using laptop computers, I have never come close to having a computer damaged by someone tripping on the power cord. I really hate the MagSafe.

Another reviewer asked why everyone gave this either one or five stars ; there's a simple answer -- either you have had a power cord fray or otherwise self-destruct or you haven't. The lucky ones may still think of this power adapter as elegant, but the rest of us are unhappy with it.

    magsafe is good

    Written by LI from Hilo

    Aug 23, 2009

I have had my macbook pro and the original charger a little over two years now. It has not left my side once, which includes travel to Japan and the continental United State, I live in Hawaii. I also travel inter-island a lot. I constantly recharge my battery, sometimes three times a day. i am on my third battery already. My winder broke off about 8 months after buying the computer. The only other issue that I am currently facing is that the prongs don't come out anymore unless I bang them on the table. I know thats not the best thing to do but it still charges.

I think if you are experiencing trouble with your charger, double check with the online trouble shooting to see what could be the cause. Some things Apple will replace for free, especially if it is some fault on their end. I don't understand how the model charger I am using only lasts one year, because I beat my charger up and it is still going.

    Written by SM from MENTOR

I have had mine for 2 1/2 years with tons of traveling. I only have the original one and it goes back and forth to school and my classrooms all day long. My kids at home pull it around from room to room too. Still working great. I did have problems with the old ones getting yanked but this magsafe is great. I would be upset if I had to replace it but I think three years is acceptable and I haven't replaced it yet. Probably should be cheaper than $79 bucks. By the way is it me or does everybody just go 5 stars or 1?
