Apple In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic
Your mileage may vary
Written by LS from Vancouver

Despite very modest expectations, I was disappointed. No bass at all.
I'm an audio engineer, so I know the difference between exaggerated bass and realistic reproduction. This wasn't a case of me wanting boom and the headphones delivering only neutrality. The bottom was just plain... missing.
Having spoken to others who noted the same lack of bass I concluded that they must just be junk, but then I saw that other people, including another audio engineer, have written very positive reviews here. That means either the quality control is poor and some units sound good while others sound terrible, or, more likely, the shape of the earpiece works well with some ears and poorly with others.
I would suggest that you listen before you buy if you can or make sure you buy them from a dealer with a decent return policy.132 of 168 people found this useful

No Tip Replacement
Written by LT from Castro Valley
May 14, 2009
I have an Iphone so something with a mic really appealed to me. However, when the plastic tip from the ear bud slipped off somewhere, as they do easily, Apple does not sell replacements. With heads as pricey as these they should just mail you the $.03 part.

Silicone "ear-tips" not available, lose one and you have to buy new set.

How is it that I have to give such a great product one star?
I'll change my rating as soon as I can buy replacement ear-tips.
One of my ear-tips fell off and is lost. Currently Apple doesn't sell replacements.56 of 62 people found this useful

Good for sitting perfectly still, walking slowly
Written by KP from Santa Monica
Jul 24, 2009
I am the kind of user that Apple dreams of -- a non-athlete who one day is so inspired by her iPod & Nike+ that she decides to start running, just to see if she can work up to a marathon. Unfortunately, the remote on these earphones is NOT EVEN REMOTELY waterproof. As soon as I worked up to three miles, I began shorting out the remote with my own sweat. I'm not even that damp -- this is run/walking along the Pacific Ocean, in 70 degree weather. But the remote is stopping my workout every 30 seconds now, forcing me to stop, restart the workout and then resume running. Terrible design? I don't even see how you can call it design when you haven't bothered to waterproof the controls on earphones that go with a device you *advertise* as a workout aid.

Good for normal use

Great for basic use and very comfortable. Purchased for running and the remote malfunctioned during my first race with them. They don't seem to handle any type of moisture which seems to be the what other reviewers say.

BE WARNED: No replacements for silicone earbuds
Written by JC from RIDGELAND
Jul 11, 2009
I loved these headphones until every single silicone earbud fell off and was lost. It didn't take long for this to happen. APPLE DOES NOT OFFERN REPLACEMENTS! Now I can't use these expensive headphones and I'm a very unhappy customer. In no way have I gotten my money's worth. BE WARNED!

Fabulous product, disappointed with support though

I love those earphones. Great sound for the size. However, those silicon buds come off really easily and you'll eventually loose them and you cannot reorder them, meaning you have to buy new earphones.

Do Not Buy - Can't get replacement rubber ear pieces and they slip off
Written by NK from Edmonton
Aug 13, 2009
These headphone would be great, however they have a fatal flaw. 3 of us own these headphones, on all of them the rubber part that goes in your ear EASILY comes off. And for some bizarre reason Apple doesn't sell replacements of the likely 1 dollar part. Losing these parts makes the headphone useless.

DO NOT BUY IF YOU PLAN TO WORKOUT WITH THEM!
Written by BG from North Royalton
Jun 29, 2009
If you plan to workout with these headphones you are throwing your money away. I used the headphones for 1 week before the controls stopped working. Literally, 1 drop of sweat on the control switches can cause them to start changing songs, volume, playlists. It's terrible and apple needs to do something about it asap.

what a waste!
Written by DC from Brooklyn

Bought these headphones after an Apple store employee ranted and raved about them as the answer to the bose in ear headset. I was immediately disappointed with the cold tinny sound of every song I listened to. Did they actually make these things with absolutely no bass? I think so.
To boot! The volume control did not work!?! I went away for 3 weeks and had to live with these awful headphones.
Luckily when I went to return them, the Apple store was more than accomodating. The employee completely agreed about the poor poor sound quality. Let me return them without penalty and sold me some vibe duos.. Kinda clunky but much better sound quality.
Better luck next round, Apple60 of 89 people found this useful

Bad for working out
Written by JH from Astoria
Jun 22, 2009
Love the fit. Love the sound. But now after less than a year I'm going to be returning them since they are unusable while working out. Not sure if it's the movement or an issue with sweat getting in there but after a few minutes of working out my ipod starts to spontaneously pause songs. Tried other headphones with my ipod and did not have the same problem. If you're going to use these while working out stear clear! it's a shame, they're great in every other way.

junk! don't waste your money
Written by RM from Astoria

I bought these headphones about 6 months ago and they no longer work.
The rubber connecting the earbuds to the cord has come lose, exposing the wires. The microphone and remote function stopped working weeks ago and now only the right ear bud is working. They were great while they lasted but I won't buy another Apple headphone product for a long, long time.38 of 52 people found this useful

Don't even think of taking these to the gym!
Written by PY from Palm Desert
Feb 12, 2009
I sooooooooo wanted these to work out for me but I'm afraid I am returning today. The first problem was as others are saying...lack of bass. This was fixed however by placing the buds properly. AKA deep in the ear canal. If you can't hear the bass, then these buds are not for you. It's there, you are just not putting the buds in correctly. To test, just put a little pressure with your finger on the bud to push a little deeper in your ear canal and then you can hear the bass.
But the BIG problem for me is that the thump thump thump of the cord hitting your body is coming through to the earphones making a very disturbing sound and really is unacceptable. AND I'M JUST POWER WALKING...HEAVEN FORBID IF I WERE JOGGING! I bought these for the gym and power walking so I'm going to have to return. Do yourself a favor and don't even think of getting these if you plan on doing and body movement. SERIOUSLY!35 of 48 people found this useful

Absolute Junk, not recommended for strenuous activity.
Written by PM from Auburn
Dec 8, 2009
I bought these to use with my I-pod shuffle 3rd generation, mostly for working out. I do a lot of running and cycling and experienced problems right from day one. The first time I used them the remote stopped working after an extended run, I assumed from sweat getting in. The problem continued to re-occur after each workout and eventually the up volume button stopped working altogether. The sound quality wasn't as touted on the Apple website; I found them to sound marginal at best, even after trying all three sizes of ear buds. The replaceable tips also kept coming loose. For $80.00 headphones I certainly expected much better quality than this, especially from Apple. I've been forced into now purchasing a remote adapter (from Belkin, appears to be built to a much better quality) and Kllipsch S-4 head phones that sound exceptional. I read other reviews of these that indicated similar problems but felt as though Apple would have kept up with what was happening and addressed the issue(s) but I was apparently mistaken. Never again...

Sound great but...
Written by TV from Chicago
Sep 29, 2009
These headphones sound great, especially considering the good price.
They work well with the iPhone. The features of the headphones work except for volume up/down.
But one significant problem: The steel mesh broke off in my left ear and painfully pressed against my ear drum. The replaceable assembly didn't unscrew into my ear, though it does loosen quite often. The mesh alone broke away from its replaceable assembly. This mesh is only about 1.5mm in diameter, and has sharp edges.
I am lucky that my ear drum was not cut.22 of 23 people found this useful

Doesn't work!
Written by CD from VANCOUVER

I'm on my 5th set of in-ear headphones and they still don't work. I finally settled for being able to adjust the volume and switch from song to song but the voice over feature gave up long ago. I also got tired of shipping them back and forth. The sound quality is great (this is the only plus)I just wish all of the features would work.

The Pits!!!
Written by BR from San Marcos
Jul 8, 2009
I have never in my iLife had to complain about an Apple product. There is a first time for everything I suppose. My GF bought these for me when I purchased a new 120 GB Classic. The good before the bad: 1). Finally, a design that fits my very small ear canal. That's it!!! Now , the bad: 1). Almost no bass response unless the signal is artificially enhanced. 2). Noisy signal when connected to Macbook Pro, iPod Classic 120 GB, iPod Classic 160 GB and iPhone 3G S. 3). Unresponsive controls from the headset. "Sometimes I click three times to skip a song and the lag in communication causes the device to skip three songs". The stock headphones that came with my iPhone 3G S sound much better and do not exhibit the negatives I have described. I am thoroughly disappointed in Apples engineers for producing such a a shabby product.

No bass!
Written by AM from SAINT LOUIS PARK
Feb 15, 2009
I'm going to repeat what many people have already said: these headphones have no bass response at all! At first, I thought that I might have changed the EQ setting on my nano to something with minimal bass, but even after adjusting it to a bass-heavy setting, there was still absolutely no bass response in the headphones.
In fact, they sound far, far worse than the ones that were packaged with the 4th gen nano in the first place.
The mic works fine, and I'm glad to have it. But if you're in the market for a quality set of in-ear phones, then go look elsewhere. These are awful.45 of 70 people found this useful

Horrible Headphones
Written by CE
Mar 6, 2009
I recently bought a pair of these headphones and I immediately noticed the lack in bass. It sounds better than the regular headphones included with an iPod, but these are definitely not worth 80. The older apple in-ear headphones were so much better-- what did they do?! However, they improved in the isolation of the surrounding noise. I wouldn't recommend these headphones.. too bad I can't return mine.

Static Shock. Beware.
Written by CC from Harbor City
Jan 19, 2009
I'm not sure if it is because it is winter and the air is dry but I have been shocked 5 times now.
I purchased the headphones on 12/26/08 at South Coast Plaza Apple Store. I was shocked 1x in the right ear within the first 2 days. I thought maybe it was the packaging and that it was a fluke.
2 weeks later (1/7/09) I was shocked 2x in a row in the right ear. Inspected headphones and unscrewed metal grill, no ear wax, completely clean.
On 1/15/09, I was shocked again while plugged into a laptop. Right ear. I assumed that maybe it was defective so I exchanged them at the Apple Store on 1/17/09. The service was excellent.
1/19/09 got shocked in the left ear. This is the brand new pair that I got 2 days ago.
The shocks are particularly painful since they are in the ear canal. My friend that purchased a pair at The Grove has also been shocked 1x in the right ear.22 of 26 people found this useful
