Apple in ear electro shock treatment

    Written by JS from Pittsburgh

    Dec 4, 2009

I have always owned and been happy with the apple in ear headphones until now. I bought my current pair a few months back and since then. The small silicone right ear piece kept coming off and getting stuck in my ear, I put up with this as it did not bother me to the point were I wanted to take them back and it only happened on the odd occasion. But then came the cold weather. Now when I were them I get shocked at the slightest movement. I even had people in work plug them into their laptops and sit down and stand up and just holding them they also were receiving shock. Now my ears are throbbing from these things and I will never again put them in my ears. I will be taking them back and getting a new pair of noise canceling earphones that will not fry my brain and my ears. I am dissapointed because I loved the original release of these. If the apple store gives me any grief about returning after a number of months I will make them hold my earphones and move around the store. BOOOOOOOOOO!

PS: this is the first ever time I have felt let down by an apple product.

    Great while they last...

    Written by DT from Barre

    Nov 30, 2009

I have small ears, and cannot use regular ear buds. My husband got these for my birthday (mid-August) and I used them all the time. The remote volume control never worked from Day 1, but I was not concerned. They fit my ear at the smallest setting, and I was pleased enough with the sound quality, so I let the remote thing go. I was just pleased at finding earbuds that fit.

BUT, it is now the end of November, and I am shopping for a new pair. One side starting getting a buzzing sound, then cut out intermittently, then died altogether.

The fit is there, but the durability is not.

    Well, the remote works...

    Written by MM from Ventura

I was immediately disappointed with the lack of bass. I got used to that eventually, but when I put my old Sonys on I am reminded of all that beautiful bass I have been missing.

The worst thing I hate about these headphones are the tiny electric shocks to my ears on a dry day. I returned these once because of this and the second pair did the same thing, but on the other ear. This is intermittent but the every-ten seconds-or-so shocks destroy my ability to enjoy the music.

And the rubber ferrules where the wire attaches to the bud have become unattached and disintegrated. I reattached them with a dab of silicon glue, but the rubber continues to disintegrate.

Good try Apple, but these headphones are not good.

    Major let down

Written by SW from scotts valley

These headphones have terrible sound. I just bought them today and honestly, I would rather use the regular headphones that come with the iPods. There is bass, thought little, and the speakers do a good job of muffling exterior noise, but there is no treble or juicy bass. I also have the Bose in-ear headphones, but bought these for the remote. The Bose in-ear headphones are FAR superior...delicious bass and treble for $20 more. All the hype about these headphones is overrated...not worth $80...not a chance.

    Underwhelmed

    Written by PC from Longueuil

    Nov 16, 2009

Sound is pretty good, and they are comfortable. The silicon ear buds stay flexible and are good at blocking out exterior sound.

But I must say, the build quality of the cabling is pretty bad. The sheaths over the connectors all came unglued and disintegrated after 6 months. It wasn't long after that I lost sound in the right ear-bud. $90 for earbuds that last 8 months? I don't think so.

Good sound but pathetic remote reliability

    Written by SW from Hamilton

    Nov 13, 2009

I bought these ear buds back in the July mainly for the remote control and microphone. I have to admit that the sound and comfort are very good but within a month the remote stopped working and then a couple weeks later the mic stopped. I haven't returned these since I don't know what the warrenty is on the product. Apple - the remote and mic are great when they work, please make them last as they should for this kind of price.

    Overpriced & Underdeveloped

    Written by JP from Bradford

    Nov 9, 2009

The Good: better than the stock buds, nice mic, nice volume and pause control.
The Bad: Silicone buds fall off, no replacements available, friction noises are telegraphed through the wires, pricey, weak bass, boring white. How about some colors?

    Pretty Much Useless.

    Written by LC from calgary

I bought them thinking they were going to be wonderful pieces of technology (for the price and the apple brand). But there is not much difference from the ear-phones you get with your ipod. The only wonders are: The in-ear plastic buds and the small right ear control. The problem is that, in-ear they can be very uncomfotable (if none of the sizes fit) and the control is most of the time useless. I was very disappointed with the product, but truly for the outrageous price. If cheeper it would justify for its faults, but for what I paid, I expected more. Better Off buying headphones or just keeping the ones that came with your ipod, honesty your not missing that much.

    Forget it for Bass!!

Written by BB from Jakarta Barat

    Nov 2, 2009

I have Sennheiser MM50 iPhone before lose it in 2 weeks. After that I looking for a better headset for my iPhone 3G. I look in apple store, the feature quiet interesting, especially the dual driver and the case. I bought and use it only for 2 weeks and throw it away then buy another MM50 iPhone again. Why ?
    1. No Bass, forget about amazing bass response. Its FAKE!!
    2. Sound Isolation is too very very good, the silicone tip make you hear our own sound, don't use it for outdoor activity even when you walking. I think Apple choose the wrong material and design for the silicone tips. I already try different size by following the suggestion from manual book.

My sugestions, if you looking for AMAZING BASS, forget this. But if you looking for apple design and feature volume, buy this.

Not good for wearing to the gym

    Written by GM from orinda

    Oct 31, 2009

I bought these earbuds to replace the standard version that came with my iPod shuffle. They are reasonable sound quality, but not particularly great. You can get much better for the price. But, I needed the remote control unit to work my iPod shuffle, so I was happy enough buying them.

But, the first time I wore them to the gym the remote stopped working properly after I made the mistake of touching it with a sweaty hand. The next trip to the gym I was more careful, but the remote must have picked up some sweat from my neck, and it stopped working....permanently.

If you need earphones for wearing at the gym I'd buy the belkin remote (($19.99) and another pair of earphones instead.

    Disappointed

    Written by RG from Hickory

    Oct 31, 2009

After a month of use and trying real hard to like these, I must say I'm disappointed. I was hoping for much better sound, and a better fit. The construction and build is fine, as well as the inline mic.... but the sound and fit is sub par in my mind for $79.

The sound quality just isn't there, the best term I can come up with is hallow. I own a pair of $35 Sony's that sound MUCH better. The fit for me is only so so, I can get a seal... but in doing so they become uncomfortable after 15 minutes or so.

These headphones are going to be relegated for use with my MacBook when using Skype and iChat, as I'm just not happy with them for music listening.

This is $79 I wish I could have back for sure.

    Use with Kid-gloves

Written by GS from Santa Clara

The acoustic/electronic design is pretty good and comparable to other headphones in this price range. The industrial/usability design is probably one of the worst that has ever come out of apple. The soft rubber cushions come off constantly or stay stuck in your ear, they are easy to lose and so is the mesh ear-wax screen that attaches to the end. So if you run, bike, or do anything active or even sleeping and in the night your arm catches in the cord and pulls out the buds, expect to be searching on the floor for the parts of the headphones.

    Found Them Extremely Fragile

    Written by KS from Oceanside

    Oct 26, 2009

These headphones have very good quality sound and a great form factor. But despite how gently I've treated them, those tiny white wires on two pairs have just snapped with normal usage. At $80, I can't afford for them to only last a couple of weeks. And I've been very, VERY careful--especially with the second pair--and have not had this problem with any other headphones before. I'm a devoted Mac fan for 25 years and this is the first hardware quality problem I've ever encountered that seems due to design.

    Comfortable But . . .

Written by SG from GARDEN GROVE

•The most comfortable earbuds I ever owned!
•Love the + and - volume that was added to the clicker and mic.
    •They also sound terrible.
Tinny with no base. Like listing to a cheap AM radio speaker. Apple's $30 earbuds sound much better, but don't feel as good. (I still gave it two stars for the feel)
I was very surprised, I usually love everything Apple makes. I had my friends listen to them, (to make sure I wasn't crazy) they all said the same thing. I took them back to the Apple store and had the Apple guy listen to them, he agreed with me. We opened two other packages with the same result. At his suggesting, I came back a month later and bought another pair, same sound. A different Apple person this time suggested changing the EQ and pushing deeper into my ear but It wasn't going to change the way these earbuds were designed and sounded.
Apple did honor their satisfaction guarantee and gave me my money back. Apple gets credit for that.
I do like Apple's $30 iPhone earbuds, they fit good but I use them sooooo much I wanted something softer.
For now I'm now using SnuggBuds for the iPhone. Good sound at half the price. (and no volume control)
I guess I'll wait to see what Apple comes up with for their next version of their soft iPhone earbuds. Till then, I'm off to try out Apple's new Magic Mouse.

    Takes a Bit of Effort

    Written by JC from Chester

    Oct 16, 2009

Bought these headphones about an hour ago. Was expecting the usual Apple quality but was very very disappointed. No bass, very tinny (using them with the new Shuffle).

Then read some of the review and have worked out how to get them to 'work'. There is no science behind this but what I have done has definitely improved the sound quality.

    1. Make sure non of your music has been converted to 128kbps AAC.
    2. Push the earphones as deeply into your ear as you can get them and rotate the cable arm so it is pointing diagonally forward from your ear lobes.

Do the above and hey presto they sound good!!!

Now from a medical point of view I do not know how safe it is to be thrusting some silicon encased ear phones deep into your ear but if that is the price you have to pay to get good sound quality from £63 pounds worth of phones then so be it.

Seems a shame that Apple couldn't have just designed a pair of headphones that just work by being able to wear them comfortably in you ear but I am sure there must be some reasoning behind it.

In summary not that impressed and wish I had read the reviews before purchasing. I still say Creative make the best headphones for the money. Just about to go and to try the Apples on a bike ride - but based on the issues other people seem to have had when exercising with these headphones I am expecting the worse!!!

    Fair only

    Written by SP from Copley

Was looking for a higher quality sound than the standard issue earphones with the 3G; I don't find the sound that great with these, although they are somewhat noise isolating (making chewing gum or food not a good idea, as it's noisy). No volume control on the 3G; annoying that it's not compatible. I'm going to return them, as I'm not that impressed.

I like the look and feel of the hardware, but I am disappointed by the poor build quality and the incompatibility of several functions with the new iPhone. The earbud cable connection covers both detached after only a few months. Some of the new functions, like skip, don't work.
