Don't let it sit! Design flaw...

Left macbook behind for vacation. Returned three weeks later. Battery had died and will not charge anymore. Found out I should have taken it out before leaving. Didn't happen with my PC laptop...ups!

$130 for an Apple product is a good hit. Get your credit card ready. Meanwhile enjoy reading the five star reviews on this item...

    Bad batteries

I have owned two Macbooks for the last 2 years, and the batteries have died in both of them. No warning (gradual weakening), just death. The batteries refuse to charge, and even when plugged in, the batteries seem to drain sometimes. I have always been impressed with the quality of Apple products, but the batteries they use for their Macbooks are terrible. The icing on the cake is how expensive the batteries are too... 130.00 dollars for something that won't even go 18 months?

    Expanded battery

I hope that Apple reads these reviews, and fixes the expanded battery issue. The exact thing happened to my macbook, in under a year. Now, because of the magnetic power cord, I am forced to duct-tape my cord into my computer to make sure that my laptop doesn't turn off if someone trips over the cord. Very annoying, and it happened directly after the warranty expired.

    Price of Doing Business

Not a fanboy, but have always liked Apple interface and (usually) hardware, but this battery is clearly inferior to other batteries I've dealt with. Have had HP and Dell laptops and - while they can't compete with Apple's ease of use and stability - their batteries just work better. I have what is probably a pretty typical pattern of use. I plug in probably more than I should, but always want to be mostly charged if I need to travel. Dell and HP always put up with this pretty well, never degrading to the point where I couldn't get any charge at all, but my little white Apple lasted 13 months (seems to be a pretty common duration) before the battery flat-lined.

A suggestion: How about a "dummy battery" - battery meant to only act as bridge between AC ports lasting 1 hours at the most, but tolerating frequent charging. Meanwhile, a lithium charging in a dock that will not charge beyond a recommended point. If - God Forbid - this Macbook dies, and Apple has not made a change to a better-designed battery, I'd be pretty tempted to return to the dark side. 130 bucks every 8-13 months as a "price of doing business" is pretty steep.

I got my Macbook 13 inch white in NOVEMBER or 2007 thats 6 MONTHS ago. I love mac but the batter last 2 months and now the computer isn't even registering that theres a battery there. I'm not paying 129$ to get a new battery after shelling out 1500 for the computer 6 months ago. Apple needs to fix the problem free of charge. This is worse than my Dell. At least that lasted 4 years even though it did burn my legs if it sat too long.

Second battery lasted 3 months and 11 cycles!

These batteries are horrible. My wife's MacBook battery died suddenly just over the one year mark. Thankfully Apple realized there was a problem with these batteries and extended the warranty. The replacement battery lasted 3 months and 11 cycles. This product is a joke.

    Really short life span

My first battery (that came installed in the Macbook 13in from late 2008) lasted me just over four years. I bought a new one and had to replace the wall adapter as well back in February or March 2013. I has been just 11 months now and the battery is already saying 'replace now.' A charge lasts me only about an hour and a half if I have my Macbook unplugged and running on the battery only.
For $130 the battery should be a lot better than it is, though I am glad that Apple offers free shipping.

I've been reading good reviews and bad reviews. I would have to say that the battery life is super short and it is not worth the money. I've read all the instructions on how to take care my macbook including the part about battery. The battery is drained out just like Apple drained my money to buy their battery that doesn't even have a 1 year life expectancy. TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED.

    Swelling battery = Fire Hazard?!?!

Judging byt the amount of people I have talked to about this,it seems that about 3/5 of these batteries will (at some point) swell and cause the cover to come off.I'm not sure why apple isn't replacing this themselves instead of having the customer drop 130 for another battery that will either,
    A) do the same thing
    B) not nearly last as long.
very let down by this battery and apple.

A pretty good battery with an evil side

This battery is pretty good and it has lasted me two years. I however didn't use my computer for a week, and just left it shut off with the battery partially drained. When I next used my computer the battery was DEAD. it had 601 charges on it, and before I was having a 95% battery life. I learned that you need to update the software in the battery chip via battery update 4.1, but the software won't work on Snow Leopard. I did find out how to work around the issue but had I known about this earlier I wouldn't have had to buy a new battery.

    537 Cycles with 98% Health!!!

I have been reading all of the negative comments on the macbook battery, but mine has performed very well. I have only had my macbook for 19 months, but my cycles count is 537 because I never turn my computer off. After having a full charge, I never plug it back in once I disconnect the power cord until the battery is almost dead. Often I even run it down to the point that the screen shuts off. I always let the computer fully charge before I unplug it if possible. If I do have to unplug before a full charge, I let it run all the way down again before I plug it back in.

    Battery Information:

    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No

Battery much worse for Macbook than Powerbook

    • Written by from Westport

56 of 65 people found this useful

My powerbook battery lasted a long time - a long time per charge (4 hours) and a long time in usage - 3 years. The Macbook battery started getting weak after a year, and now it barely can stay on for an hour, even less if I have airport and a DVD playing. I'm very careful with my battery usage - letting it charge, then letting is discharge fully before recharging fully. What's wrong with the technology?!?

    Also had problems early

    • Written by from WASHINGTON

My battery stopped working well after a short while. Actually my Macbook had all kinds of problems and I just recently had them all repaired under warranty but they didn't replace the battery which lasts for 30 minutes or less. I should have brought it in sooner but didn't get around to it. What bugs me is that they don't last long and the cost of a new battery is excessively expensive.

Lasted 3 years, but falling apart?!

This is ridiculous, Apple. I've replaced the charger 6 times, and now the battery is swelling to the point that the plastic cover is being pushed out of the computer?! I have to buy a new one because I can't stand this anymore/it's uneven when placed on tables/it's potentially dangerous, but it's a little ridiculous that I have to pay this much money for a new battery. Just ridiculous.

I have had this battery for 1 year almost exactly. The darn thing has already crapped out!! Now, I have to buy a new one.

One good thing is how long the battery lasts without having to be recharged though.

My Macbook is 2.5 years old and my battery is DEAD and needs to be replaced. I was going to just buy my replacement and move on - but then I read the reviews which talk about the battery being AMAZING and GREAT if you only do blah blah blah.....
To say that having users do battery maintenance is a good feature or great product is laughable... it's time for Apple to drink some of their own Koolaide. If you want to give us a product that requires specific charging and draining to keep it functioning - then the software should either automatically drain and charge the battery without requiring user action to initiate the process OR, at the very least it should prompt the user to take specific action when it is required. We get a MAC so that we can make a movie, record a podcast, read email, listen to music ... not battery maintenance - I have a PC for that.

I have the upgraded black Macbook with the 160 gig hard drive. I've had it for 2 years & the battery is still holding a charge. If you want you batter to work properly you have to run the battery down frequently until the screen shuts off. When you do this the battery can receive a full charge. Once you laptop is charged, use it on the battery, don't leave it plugged in.

    Great but....

    • Written by from Fort Worth

67 of 89 people found this useful

You have to do complete discharge and charge cycles or the battery wont hold a charge long and the battery dies.

This is caused because this is a rechargeable lithium polymer battery.

Rechargeable lithium polymer batteries suffer from the memory effect. This is when gas bubbles grow between the walfers and limits the charge. This can be overcome by doing full cycles but that takes to long.

Apple guarantees cycles NOT years of use

    • Written by from Albany

49 of 54 people found this useful

IF you bought your laptop battery from Apple, it is guaranteed for a certain number of cycles NOT for a certain length of time. If your battery has problems, take it to the Genius bar and have it checked out. If you have a real Apple battery and it has fewer than the rated number of charging cycles then they will give you a new one for free. (Does NOT matter if your AppleCare has expired.)

I have an old MacBook Pro and an old MacBook (both bought in 2007). Have replaced the Pro battery twice. The MacBook still has the original battery with 2168 cycles. iStat Pro says "Health: 87%", but I am going to replace the battery because it has begun dying too quickly at low charge.

I keep the electrons flowing in laptop batteries by using the laptop without the power supply and then plugging it in when not in use. I never leave the power cord connected when fully charged.

The battery life is not great. I got about 4 hours in the first year of using my MacBook and have gotten about 2.5 hours since then.

The Pro battery is not good, but if you get it to a Genius at first sign of a problem, you might get a free one. The MacBook (non-Pro) battery is great if you treat it right.
