makes me strongly question mac quality

    • Written by from Hancock

My first battery died after 309 cycle counts. I was a student at the time and using it unplugged almost every day on campus I hit 309 cycles after having it just over a year. Tech support said the batteries are only designed for 300 cycle counts. 300?! And the support specialist continued to tell me that 300 counts in a year is "extremely heavy use". Heavy use? For a student using it every day on campus and in class that equates to a year! The $130 price tag is completely ridiculous as well, when almost any other computer battery on the market is ~$50. And also the fact that it died after 309 cycles? That's not a huge margin.

My second battery, I was very cautious with. I always plugged it in, and I also graduated and used it less since I had a work computer. After a couple years I'm at about 200 cycle counts. However, I have found that it has started swelling which I discovered when my track pad stopped working. I realized the swelling battery was pressing on the pad from the underside rendering the track pad non-functional (or randomly engaging in a continual selected state which caused more trouble than it not working at all). I have also heard that a swelling battery could be a fire hazard.

You would think you could take a battery out and run a laptop off wall power alone, right? Not with this mac. I do so and within a few minutes of use the screen goes black and/or the computer shuts down. Apparently under normal use the computer uses the battery as a backup when it can't get enough power. When it doesn't have the battery as a reserve it shuts down.

I refuse to spend another $130 on another low quality battery and I am seriously considering giving up macs all together. (Other issues have included a disintegrating keyboard, peeling/cracking plastic around the keyboard and screen, airport card malfunction, a broken wall charger and now a second battery going prematurely.)

I'm starting to think that apple is coasting on a reputation and not backing it up with quality products.

    Disappointed

    • Written by from West Melbourne

My original 13-inch MacBook battery lasted 3 years and a 3 months.

I bought a replacement and expected it to last about the same.

The replacement lasted one year and two months (just beyond the warranty).

    Great battery if handled correct

    • Written by from Umeå

Bought my first Macbook 2006 and my battery needs to be replaced now almost 5 years later!
I have used the laptop as a laptop by using the battery and charge it when it needs power and not letting the charger be connected all the time, if you do so you do not need an laptop. The reconditioning process they have for keeping the battery alive for a long time seems to be working just fine.
I've been using a few PC laptops but none of them held this long...

    52 months - 1698 cycles - 95% capacity

    • Written by from Maple Grove

I occasionally calibrate the battery. Maybe every 2 to 6 months.

I use it 2 to maybe 6 or more hours a day. FULL brightness. Always wireless. I think I get short of 3 hours off a full charge. But I'm not sure. It was more in the beginning so I'm loosing time. But not bad.

I plug it in whenever. After shutdown - 10% left - 1/2 charge; sometimes when almost fully charged. I unplug, whenever I need it, even if it's not charged all the way. I leave it fully charged and plugged in for hours. I've even left it plugged in (or not) for days while out of town.

    There is definitely a pattern....

Those who are happy with their battery.

And those who "ALWAYS (whatever) and ALWAYS (whatever); yet, I have problems." Is it them? The laptop? or the battery?

I was thinking of buying a second one soon. On the other hand, after reading a bunch of reviews, I might not need one.

P.S. How does ANYONE own a laptop for 4 years and only cycle the battery 400 or so times?

    Early 2006 Macbook

    • Written by from Cuyahoga Falls

I haven't plugged in my macbook for about 2 months (recently got an ipad 2 and sort of abandoned it). When I finally did tonight, I was told that my battery wasn't charging and that I needed a new one. At first, I was ticked off! 129.00 for a new battery!? But that I started reading the reviews and realized that I was one of the lucky ones! I got my macbook in 2006, and I got 1120 cycles out of it. I hope my new battery works that well because the rest of my computer is fine. That'll do, little battery, that'll do....

    Excellent

My battery lasted almost 5 years, then started swelling/bulging and losing charge too fast, needing to be replaced. Not bad for a laptop battery! Just keep an eye out for the swelling before it causes damage.

Suddenly deformed itself to death after 3+ years

    • Written by from Yreka

My battery was still working well until the past week, when it suddenly deformed itself to the no-longer-functional point and has practically come apart. Of course my warranty expired about 3 months ago, so I guess I have no alternative to getting another one.

    BAD QUALITY

    • Written by from Scarborough

The original macbook battery is bad. The battery is deforming after 3 years, it ruined my plastic cover on my macbook and I can't click my mouse.
I calibrate the battery 3 times a year thinking calibrating may extends my battery life but it does not. I don't have any problem with the maximum charging capacity, it is still 3 hours and 15 mins. It is just deforming and it gets so hot. I may think it will blow up one day.

My wife's Acer laptop battery is better in quality, I bought her a laptop 3 years ago, the battery still holds the charge and it is not deforming.

My next battery will not be from Apple, 3rd party battery is far less cheaper and longer warranty.

Quality product, better than any other computer batteries

    • Written by from Grand Rapids

When I had a dell, after a year I would have to have my computer on the charger to be able to work. With my macbook, I have had it for three years and my battery life is just starting to be less. When I say less, I mean it lasts at least 3 hours on optimal usage settings still. So all in all, compared to other computer manufacturers I think that this is a great product!

    actually pretty good

    • Written by from Myrtle Beach

i’ve had my macbook for almost 4 years now. for those of you who know what it means and care, it has 413 cycles on it and it’s going pretty strong. i used to get a full 4 or so hours out of the batter when i first got it. 4 years later? i’m down to an hour and a halfish to two hours depending on what i do. if i stream, then i’m down to about 10 minutes. i didn’t usually follow the thing where you charge it fully and then let it die. when i did, it did help. most likely going to get a replacement battery soon.
just remember it’s how you treat it that helps it’s longevity. if you go and beat your car up, yeah you’re going to need a new one sooner or later. these things aren’t supposed to last forever.

It will die, at least mine did.

    • Written by from San Ysidro

I bought this on April 18th, and it died today, it didn't even last 3 months. We've been using Apple's products for some years now, and it is the first time we have a defective one, I'm hoping that it was an isolated case, anyhow, I'll be heading to the Apple Store tomorrow.

    Best battery I've seen

    • Written by from Oshkosh

I have used many many Li-Ion batteries. In fact I'm a trained chemist who researches in Li-Ion battery area and have to admit that this is by far the best Li-Ion battery I've seen in any commercial product. I'm still using the original that came with my white macbook (early 2009 model). After testing it professionally, it is at 101% capacity even after 200 cycles and more than 2 yrs later. I easily get more than 5 hrs of output.

    Quickly loses capacity

    • Written by from Vantaa

I have a 32 month old battery with 272 cycles, and only have 25% of the battery capacity left, translating to about 30 minutes of battery life. The battery has never been exposed to extreme temperatures or handled otherwise carelessly, so these numbers are highly disappointing for a battery with this kind of price tag on it.

A pretty good battery with an evil side

    • Written by from Orinda

This battery is pretty good and it has lasted me two years. I however didn't use my computer for a week, and just left it shut off with the battery partially drained. When I next used my computer the battery was DEAD. it had 601 charges on it, and before I was having a 95% battery life. I learned that you need to update the software in the battery chip via battery update 4.1, but the software won't work on Snow Leopard. I did find out how to work around the issue but had I known about this earlier I wouldn't have had to buy a new battery.

    1400 cycles+

    • Written by from Madison

Maybe I have a low expectation of batteries these days, but I'm giving this battery 5 stars for doing exactly what it promised to and then some. I've had my Macbook for nearly 4 years now. My first battery died after two; I put this laptop through it's paces. It's turned on virtually as long as I am. I keep the screen brightness high and don't use a screensaver or energy saving software.

The capacity has definitely lessened, but I am at over 1400 cycles after two years of use and can still get a solid 2 hours off my battery while running multiple programs and streaming video. All I've had to do is stick to their suggestion of powering all the way up and not beyond that and then allowing the battery to completely drain. Considering Apple would've told me to replace my battery 800 cycles ago, I can't complain; I'd happily buy a replacement battery now but I can see this one easily lasting another few months or a couple hundred more cycles.

Lasted 3 years, but falling apart?!

    • Written by from El Cerrito

This is ridiculous, Apple. I've replaced the charger 6 times, and now the battery is swelling to the point that the plastic cover is being pushed out of the computer?! I have to buy a new one because I can't stand this anymore/it's uneven when placed on tables/it's potentially dangerous, but it's a little ridiculous that I have to pay this much money for a new battery. Just ridiculous.

    Rechargeable Battery- Be aware

    • Written by from TALLAHASSEE

I had this computer for 2 and half years. Over the years the battery would hold less and less, but never had a problem since I left the laptop unused for 10 days. Even thought the computer was charged and the charger not plugged in, at my return from my vacation the battery would not hold the charge, not even for a second. The charger gives me the green light, but the battery just does not hold. After reading some of the reviews, noticing that a lot of people had the same problems I wish I would have known better. I suggest anybody to read reviews on how to take care of their battery, or that Apple would warn their consumers. I also agree with other people about the high cost of the battery. Overall, in my experience PC laptops last much longer. When my battery died, my mouse pad broke too. That NEVER happened with my PC.
