Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Great idea, fair execution.

I am *brutal* on these things. Have about 5 of them (no, only because I keep forgetting them at home :) )
I work in factory conditions, and my prob is the magnet on the 'puter sucking in the tiny metal balls a CNC laser generates. This causes the plug not to go in far enough to make contact. (and its a bear to clean out! a flush design might have been better or put the magnet on the cable end, but that could lead to shorts) I'll be machining up a little cover for it. (though been saying that for about 2 years now :) )
I yank on the mag end of the cable, bend it tightly etc. None have failed yet (other then the recliner mechanics chewing up the cable.)
Guess I've been lucky. 3.5 years and it just starting to have a bad connection (but got a new MBP n the way)
I just can't figure out why the AC cable is 3 prong yet the fold away plug is 2 prong.1 of 2 people found this useful

I'm happy with it, despite crummy plug piece.
Written by CW from Cambridge

I have had my Macbook for 2.5 years and have had none of the problems described here with my power adapter. For everyone who is experiencing wires disconnecting where the cord enters the brick, I would recommend (on your next adapter) not wrapping the cord around the prongs that flip out of the brick. They are a cool idea, and useful sometimes, but the continued stress of bending the cord 90 degrees or more everyday when you pack up your laptop is definitely not good for it. It's the same thing that happens to video game controllers when you put them away by wrapping them up in their cords. For the people whose cords caught on fire ... yikes. I hope you are using the product with correct laptop.
My only problem with the product is that the two-prong plug piece that connects to the brick is pretty flimsy. Mine gave out after about a year of plugging and unplugging, it just came apart, so minus one star. You can replace it with a plug piece from another adapter, like your iPod adapter or with one from an international adapter kit, or you can just do what I do and carry the three-prong cord extension around. Unfortunately, Apple does not sell this piece separately.6 of 12 people found this useful

Lasted almost 3 years

The charger for my MacBook is finally burning up after almost 3 years. I say finally burning up because it is always VERY HOT! I am not complaining because it did last 3 years but it is extremely pricey to purchase a new one. I do have to say that I travel a lot and the power cord is always being used and put away several times a day. Overall I think the product has been quite durable as I do not always store it the way it should be stored.

I have read all of the reviews on this site about the power adapters for the MacBook Pro, MacBook, and MacBook Air. I was very surprised to discover how unhappy people were with them. Mine has always worked well for me. However, (and I say this in the nicest way possible) the thing isn't an armored vehicle or anything. You have to treat it like what it is: an expensive, delicate piece of equipment, because that's what it is.
The real thing i wanted to say here though was that whoever it was that posted how you could use the 85W adapter for Macbook Pro on the MacBook is wrong. You would burn up the battery after an extended period of time and possibly a few other components associated with the power system as well.15 of 21 people found this useful

Power Cord

I bought a Macbook for college last year. Today for the first time the Power block stopped working. After some messing with the smaller cord I was able to get it to start charging again.
The cords will be able to take a beating, but be careful you do not get cuts, twists, or kinks in the thin cord or else your screwed.19 of 25 people found this useful

Order of connection is important!
Written by GM from Blevins
Jun 3, 2009
For those of you who find that you only get power/light the magsafe connector every once in a while when you plug-in (but while you're plugged-in power remains constant) here's a tip.
The order you plug in the adapter is crucial. Yes, it's stupid. Yes, it's annoying. Yes, you can't find it documented ANYWHERE. Never the less, the order is key.
OK, without further jibber-jabber, here's the magic:
1. Connect your AC adapter to a wall outlet. Do not have the Macbook side (the "magsafe" connector) connected when you do so.
2. Connect the magsafe connector to your Mac. You will get a light on the magsafe connector.
There is a slight caveat. If you connected your power brick in the wrong order, you will have to perform the following steps:
1. Unplug the power brick. The order does not matter, but you will need both ends disconnected. Wait approximately 15 minutes or so. I have not timed it exactly when I have made the mistake of hooking up the power adapter in the wrong order, but around 15 minutes is what it takes. It may take longer for a Macbook Pro since it has larger capacitors.
2. Hook the power brick back up in the correct order listed above.
I theorize that the little brain in the power brick (the one that lights the green light when the battery is charged and the orange light when it is not) gets confused when you plug the adapter up in the wrong order, and to reset the brain you must let the capacitors in the power brick drain. Capacitors will hold an electrical charge for a decent amount of time, which is why you must wait a few minutes before plugging back in. Once the power is drained the brain resets and you can try again.
Hope this helps.

I have two, one for home and one for the office. I am very abusive to the home chord and have been yelled at for yanking it out of the outlet from a few feet away. I have never had a problem. The block does get a little hot but I now use it as a coaster to keep my drinks warm.
Side note:
I am also one of those people who have an ipod and has never replaced the battery.11 of 18 people found this useful

easy to fix
Written by RH from LONDON

I have read all the negative comments. Yes it is very " unMacish " to have something break b4 it should. That being said.... This thing has saved my MacBook Pro several times. When it finally did break... at the magnet part... it was so easy to fix... A little solder... and a little shrink wrap.... Voila! Only two wires to deal with... Much easier than the old four wire thing.

Hit or Miss
Written by MB from Ashland
Mar 2, 2009
I've had my MacBook since the week they came out and only now- three years later- have I started to have the slightest of problems with my adapter.
My problem is different than the other users I've seen- it seems the connection doesn't always fully connect and I have to play with it a little to get it to charge. Not a big deal, but still annoying, and I assume it will get worse (although I've decided to upgrade to a MacBook Air now so I won't be able to confirm future cable problems)
Considering I'm on my computer almost 24 hours a day (I do keep it on 24/7) I think this cable has lasted remarkably well. And I can't count the number of times that the magnetic connection has saved my laptop from devastating destruction by a dog walking through the wire or a fellow passenger at an airport nearly being tripped by not paying attention to where they are going. In my opinion the benefits of the wire far exceed the problems.
My husband however has not been so lucky with his MacBook Pro. He bought his laptop a year after I got mine and is on his third power adapter. The first two were official Apple and frayed almost right away, the third one that has lasted was an aftermarket product that has a opaque plastic boot over the plug and the first inch of wire preventing it from moving around at the plug and fraying. Maybe Apple could learn from their aftermarket imitator and apply this obvious improvement to the product they are charging seventy bucks for. Just a suggestion.17 of 19 people found this useful

Be Rationale in Your Expectations
Written by AG
Feb 24, 2009
I'm writing this due to the large number of "the brick heats too much", "my children aren't gentle & the cable breaks", or "it's so expensive!" etc style reviews.
First: the transformer / rectifier circuit is a piece of power electronics, even on much bulkier blocks of similar wattage, you get a lot of heat. Compress it in size, you get more heat. I don't know about the rest of the world, but when I bought a Macbook, it was on the theory that I wanted something lightweight, small and portable. Heat from the transformer (a given for any laptop) was not a concern.
Second: If we're talking under the age of thirteen, a laptop is the *wrong* *computer* to be using with children. I don't care who made it, children are not laptop friendly. What you are looking for is an iMac or a Mini (assuming you're a dedicated Mac user).
Finally, a price tag of 79 dollars, when you consider the rare earth magnet and the extremely compact transformer / rectifier circuitry, you better realize that it isn't going to be a twenty dollar product. Miniaturization costs $.
The arguments regarding the inability to isolate the transformer from both cords does hold merit (though I'll note that this is typical of most AC/DC adapters on the market). As to fraying / melting within 6 months, I've had mine since early Sept 08 & not a single sign. I regularly abuse my cord & it has held up like a pro.
Try something: google "65 w power adapter" and notice how many adapters have the cord hard wired on one side, and how the price tends to stray to the 50, 60 dollar range (72 for an HP laptop 65w adapter). Also note that the brick size is simply massive by comparison.19 of 39 people found this useful

It's not indestructible...
Written by JS from SCOTCH PLAINS
Jan 26, 2009
While this article is mostly in praise of the MagSafe adapter, which anyone has to admit is better than the old ibook adapters that were just terrible, i don't admit that it feels a bit flimsy. I bet it has to be due to the terrible plastic mac has been using since the transition from the "bullet-proof" material they used in old ibooks. it's thinner and obviously cheaper but have 4 macbooks in my house and have had NONE of the problems that people are talking about. I have heard of these things happening to people who mistreat their equipment by yanking out the cords or from friends whose kids have "gotten a hold on them" but aside from those two demographics I haven't heard of so many instances of faulty electrical equipment that hasn't resulted in a product recall. I am the first person to admit that my romance with apple products has been shaky over the years, but not to the extent where I can't admit my own carelessness with my expensive toys. Accountability people. If you rip the charger out of the wall like it's a turnip it's going to break over time; it's not indestructible.

My adapter is over a year old and I have had no problems with it. I take my computer with me every day to class, so the adapter gets plenty of use as well as the cord being constantly wound up and thrown into my bag. I have had no problems with the cable fraying, or the light not working, etc. As with most apple products, I am very pleased. As a general rule, as with all things electronic, I would still be gentle with the power adapter and not swing it around over your head or other such activities. But based on normal wear and tear, the adapter has held up great.

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Works as Described
Written by PC from Houghton
Dec 1, 2008
Despite what some reviewers will have you think, the MagSafe is as good, if not superior, in design to all previous power supplies I have had going all the way back to the PB190 c/s.
There are a number of things I like about this adapter. The first is that it is nice and compact like my G4 adapters, and the magsafe really works. If I put a little too much pressure on it when moving around the cable pops off and I am free to go. I also like the way that the magnet just snaps into place rather than wiggling the cable around as I did with older adapters.
There is really nothing I do not like about it, although the way that the cable attaches to the magsafe plug and the brick looks like it could be a stress point likely to failure. This has been a constant issue with all power bricks regardless of their design. The constant flexing at a single point cannot help but cause failure. There is no way around this without changing the way cables are handled when wound around the brick.
As with all my notebook computers, I buy two power supplies and keep one at my two main locations (home and work). I also get Applecare because notebooks take a beating and I've had a couple of power supplies and batteries replaced under this.

I do love the portability of this product and the magnet is awesome. I have just had to replace mine after 2 years of my first one working perfectly. The only thing that bugged me is that the clips to wrap the wire around broke off in about a year and a half, making it much less portable. Good job Apple.
