I loved having a power cord, and it's an ingenious idea to make it magnetic; however, my cord melted itself last night and now I only have 30% of my battery left.
It is a fire hazard in my opinion. It's been overheating my computer and only when it actually melted itself did I realize how hot it was getting. Wow.
I'm taking it into an Apple Store to get checked out. I love Apple products, but I'm sad that this one isn't working so well.

Pros:
Does what it should, powers computer.
Magnet is nice, that does what it should too.

Cons:
It ran hot enough long enough to melt its own cord, right where it goes into the "box" part of it. Like others say, this can happen, and if and when it does, you have to get a new cord. You might avoid this by running it off the battery, but after four years, my battery life is about an hour, often less.
New cords are kind of expensive at $80.

loss of clickiness

my charger is losing its clickiness of the retractable folding plug and also the retractable wounder has the same problem. it also gets very hot and burns me a few times. there needs to be more insulation and sturdier clicking mechanism.

Cool Idea, Poor Execution

The MagSafe idea is cool, but the cord wrap on the adapter is no good. It's convenient, but puts a LOT of strain on the skinny cable as you wrap it. This is the part that has failed on my power adapter and I knew from Day 1 that I should watch our for it. It needs more protection like the fat cable that extends the adapter's length.

Also, for those of you who have had issues with the part that connects with the computer, make sure you remove the connector by tilting it up or down or side to side to disconnect the magnet. The Magsafe adapter was designed to be pulled from the sides rather than straight out from the computer. the magnet's strength is most powerful when pulled straight away, and with very little to hold onto, you're GOING to tear the insulation and ruin your cord. Tilt it and it comes free easily.

When the adapter fails, try pulling out the 3 middle pins (2 larger and the smaller middle one)on the magnetic connection with a needlenose pliers. Carefully! Make sure they do not go past the length of the outer 2 pins (There are 5 total)This has saved many from buying a new adapter. With continued use, the pins gradually sink into the plug, preventing the contact with the Mac. Good Luck.

I think that this product is really great. Especially with the MagSafe feature, its just waay more than i thought it would cost. The problem is that you cant use your computer without one.. so you pretty much have to buy it.

Successful Replacement of Defective Product!

Ok, I had a NIGHTMARE problem with my MagSafe adapter, it went totally south hours before a Skype conference, simply kaput. So I was ready to pitch a fit and demand a replacement even though it was no longer under warranty - after all, I'd never done anything weird to it like let my dogs play tug-of-war with it, or use it as a bungee cord. I made an appointment with a tech at an Apple "Genius Bar" in Portland (lucky for me, not lucky for others a bazillion miles away from an Apple Store) and he replaced it with NO argument what-so-ever; just swapped it out once he confirmed it didn't work. I did take the extra precaution of also buying a back-up so I never get myself into THAT jam again. I'd read all the many horror stories of MagSafe wires burning things, melting plastic cords, sparks, etc. I'm extremely pleased Apple seems to have come to their senses about "The MagSafe Problem" and is doing the right thing. I only gave 3 stars because I'm not entirely convinced the replacement I received is significantly more robust than the dead one, even though the tech told me the design has been improved; time will tell. Sorry about the long post...

60W Power Adapter

I've still got the adapter that I got with my MacBook when I bought it about a year ago, and it's held up well as far as charging my laptop- it does fall out of the wall very easily though- and finally yesterday it fell out of the wall (on its own) and the piece that snaps on with the prongs broke off- it still works but now it falls out even worse, and falls apart when I try to pull out the prongs. I wish it didn't cost $79 to replace!!! As a college student I can barely afford gas, let alone an adapter this expensive! But all in all, it's held up pretty well- especially compared to the stupid charger I had with my PC before!

A little scared of the brick...

I've had my Macbook for 11 months now, and so far I haven't had any troubles with the adapter...So far! I actually really like the design of it, the magnetic thing saved my computer from hitting the floor several times.

Unfortunately there has been a drastic increase in the adapter's temperature over the past few months. The "brick" becomes so incredibly hot that I cannot touch it for more than a few seconds. It's amazing that the plastic hasn't melted! If I hold it up to my ear while plugged in, it has a static noise to it. I'm actually scared to unplug the longer extension cord from the brick.... I feel like it will catch fire one day, or I'll get a bad shock or something from it. If I'm going to disconnect the extension I always unplug it from the wall.

What I've been doing lately, is as soon as my battery's power reaches in the 90's, I unplug the power adaptor from the computer and the wall and let it cool off. I don't let the computer stay connected to the power source when it's at 100%. Some might say it's bad for the battery life, but I'd rather have my battery die out than the adaptor catch fire! It's a little annoying to have to plug it back in and unplug it, but at least I'm not siting there with a near-melting piece of equipment beside me. I also try not to unplug the magsafe plug from the cord itself, as I've read this can cause wear to the wires inside. The green/amber LED light works only sometimes, maybe it burned out (literally!). Sometimes it's very very dim.

Hopefully I'll prolong the life of my adapter by letting it cool off several times a day.... We'll have to see!

I have had my adapter for a little over a year (1 week over a year ) and over this weekend it stopped working. The actual adapter block will get very very very hot if plugged up but the light on the indicator will not light up and thus will not charge my laptop. Is there anyone else out there with this problem that can help me out? Is it my laptop or the adapter that is damaged... other than that this product is useful and works well until problems like this arise.

the 85W power adapter, is amazingly hot. and its true. these things will eventually melt down. BUT if you just need it for at home use, you should buy this one and give your computer a break. All of these will eventually melt down. it happened to mine on my MBP. and that was the one it came with!! but i suggest the 60W over the 80W only because, i really dont feel like buying a battery for my computer...AGAIN.

wire and insulation tearing off, power connection cutting out

The magnet at the connection point to the laptop is a great idea and good design thinking. But the designers must not have foreseen that the point at where that same wire is permanently connected to the to power adapter "brick" is very weak. I'm always careful with any electrical cords. I handle them gently, never tightly wrap wires or yank on them, etc. I think the damage happened while the power adapter was in my back pack. I had the wire in a safe position in there where it would not be pulled by something, but looks like somehow the wire got a little twisted against the permanent plastic connector that goes into the brick, and i now have a break in the power connection that goes in and out. I may try to repair the DC wire myself. Then i will make a special protective case for carrying around this adapter. If apple does not make such a case, i think they should.

I understand some people always keep some of the small wire wrapped around the fold out legs. Then it is less likely for the wire to be twisted away from the plastic connector going into the brick.

Apple 60w Charger Pros and Cons

++Pros++
+Will take normal wear and tear, in and out of backpacks, bags, etc... I've surely kicked it a couple of times under my desk with no harm done.
+It looks nice. Its Apple, of course it looks nice.
+The magnetic connection is a great idea, and the ability to use a grounded extension plug is great when an outlet isn't nearby.

--Cons--
-This baby is Hot, not just Hott. After charging your battery, she will heat up to a point where you get scared. I wouldn't recommend letting paper, dust, or cats sit on top of this charger.
-Had the original charger with my computer for 1.5 years before the cord frayed and nearly set a textbook on fire in my dorm room, sparks and smoke next to my bed got my attention. If i was out of the room, there definitely would have been a fire.
-So when your cord fails, and it will, these babies are not cheap to replace. $71 dollars to replace with a student discount, and they are not covered by warranty because Apple does not yet recognize this as a universal issue with all chargers.

+-Recommendations-+
Buy a Apple Laptop, treat it like how much it costs, and remember that you paid for that little white brick too.
It is a good idea to wrap the cord loosely around the entire charger once before securing it tightly around the cord holders. Will hopefully extend the life of your cord.

Overall, I feel that this charger is ok. It charges fairly quickly.
However, since I got it with a new MacBook for Christmas 2007, it has "died" on me three times. I wouldn't be able to charge my laptop for hours. I don't think a replacement charger should cost $80.

I really hope this product gets redesigned for the release of the Macbook Air. Like many other reviewers, my power adapter sent a blue spark and started smoking near the magnet.

However, all I can say is for now, get Apple Care. They replaced my power adapter right in the store. It seems to be the only solution for now!

One Year Replace

I have an issue with apple and these chargers , first my ibook charger had to be replaced because where it connects to the part to charge there was a short it was not connecting and now my macbook where the magnet is , is not connecting so I can charge and this is after a year. Seems like from all the reviews I read this is a common issue and I am not happy about having to buy a new charger after a year.

So like everyone said, mine broke right where the wire meets the magnet! That's annoying, cause since it's a magnet you have to yank it out, and that breaks it. new ones are so expensive too! no mo laptop fo sho...
