Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Terrible
Written by TM from cincinnati

Horrible adapter. The power cord broke out of the plastic casing right where the power cord comes out of the adapter (brick). So wires are exposed and cut. Does not charge anymore and left with no option but to shell out 79$ for another one, which who knows how long it will last!
Spoke with customer service and also a supervisor who said that this product is "fine" and that "wire splaying occurs if one wraps too tightly around the hinges". Thats a pathetic lame excuse APPLE! The hinges are provided for wrapping around them and I dont wrap it "tight". Hello!!
Look at the 1123 reviews (before my review), and if you are patient enough to read them, you will see that there are major complaints with this product including "melting" of the cord, the magnetic part coming off, wire splaying etc etc! How can apple customer service not be reading all this or taking drastic measures to improve the quality on this product!!
Am a big apple fan and will continue to be despite the fact that this is the first time am left unsatisfied!
Disappointed with the product and customer service. Thought Apple was "BETTER" at it compared to others!2 of 2 people found this useful

Horrible Adapter

This adapter is horrible. My first one broke at the movable piece that tucks into the adapter. I purchased another one and after unplugging it from the outlet, the same movable piece snapped and broke off. Now I am really disappointed because at 80 bucks a piece it's not even covered by warranty.

Absolutely horrible!

Sorry, Apple. I usually love your products, but this power adapter is atrocious. I have owned 6 of these cords (two of which were replaced by Apple), and 5 of them have failed, with two of these having frayed at the MagSafe connection. That's close to $400 in wasted product, and an 83% fail rate. I now have the new MagSafe power cord (that I paid for myself)-- let's hope it works a whole lot better!

My charger (and Macbook) are about three years old now, and are used everyday, for hours on end. I guess Apple expects people to take care of their things, at least to a college student's level. I will admit that it get's quite hot at times, but they all do :-P

I love how its magnetic..but I have gone through 3 chargers in 3 years because of the wire splitting right where it plugs into my computer.

Great design, but a bit flimsy

Love the design. Travels better than the adapters that came with my PC's. But, my PC adapters were far more rugged. Right now, the wires are pulling out of my Mac adapter and I need to buy another one. I never replaced an adapter on a PC.

Melted wire
Written by JG from lake in the hills
Nov 29, 2009
I have to purchase a new ac adapter now, cause my wire that's near the brick must of over heated witch caused the wires to melt and melt the rubber plastic around it. I don't think we have to purchase a new one if its a manufacture defect. I use the same outlets around my house. And not one of my electronics have malfunctioned or melted. I will go to the apple store tomorrow and see what they have to say about this after I show them what happened. It is clearly visible that it was not my fault. I will be more than happy to send you a picture of it. Just ask...

Dead after 1.5 years.

As a longtime user of Apple products I am disappointed with this adapter. It has been slowly failing for about three months (and is now failing to charge over 50% of the time). This happened with the previous version (pre-mag-safe) as well. With all of the industrial design talent they have on staff, and the overwhelming number of disappointed users posting here that Apple would address the issue. At a bear minimum cover the cost of replacement under warranty. I would prefer to see them get it right, rather than dumping these in the landfill.

Why does Apple ignore this problem?
Written by HT from League City
Nov 27, 2009
I had my MacBook Air for less than 3 months when the housing of the magnetic head came loose and popped off. I now have to tape it down, since the charging connection still works as long as the tape holds the housing together.
I hate that my sleek Air has tape on the side holding the connection in. I have to carry a roll of clear tape with me everywhere. And I'm just waiting for the day when the whole thing goes up in smoke.
Apple should be appalled at the lack of quality, and they should be deeply embarrassed that they have failed to live up to their own reputation for quality. Perhaps they are distracted by their falling stock prices, and can't be bothered to maintain the customers they already have.
I would think that satisfying their current customers would be a great start rebuilding faith in their products and GOOD WILL.4 of 5 people found this useful

I really like most all my Apple products. But these adapts are junk. Everyone I know that has one has had to replace it. The design flaw must be known by Apple. Why doesn't Apple fix this flaw?

This adapter is HORRIBLE!! It has come apart at the magnet plug in thing after only two months. It's not covered under the warranty either, but it should be because it is DEFECTIVE if it breaks after two months of NORMAL in home use. The cords have never been coiled, bent or abused.

I am *brutal* on these things. Have about 5 of them (no, only because I keep forgetting them at home :) )
I work in factory conditions, and my prob is the magnet on the 'puter sucking in the tiny metal balls a CNC laser generates. This causes the plug not to go in far enough to make contact. (and its a bear to clean out! a flush design might have been better or put the magnet on the cable end, but that could lead to shorts) I'll be machining up a little cover for it. (though been saying that for about 2 years now :) )
I yank on the mag end of the cable, bend it tightly etc. None have failed yet (other then the recliner mechanics chewing up the cable.)
Guess I've been lucky. 3.5 years and it just starting to have a bad connection (but got a new MBP n the way)
I just can't figure out why the AC cable is 3 prong yet the fold away plug is 2 prong.3 of 7 people found this useful

I have had my macbook for just under three years, and I haul it around everywhere. Two years ago, my kitten's razor claws sliced through the power cord in several places exposing the wires. I wrapped the cord in electrical tape and have continued to use it all this time with no problems. I am thinking of replacing it now because the tape is coming off in places and collecting bits of lint and hair, looks bad in study group. But the cord is still working fine!

I will write today's "my power cord hath died" review
Written by SR from Hendersonville
Nov 16, 2009
My not-yet-a-year-old MacBook was plugging along today when the light on the magsafe went out. No warning, no power surge, just *blip* and gone. I have to take the whole thing over to the Apple Store tomorrow where the very nice apple expert has assured me they might replace the part, maybe. I bought this computer when I discovered that the power source on my G4 had detached from the motherboard, and because of the age of the G4 decided to get myself a nice shiny new MacBook. Now more power cord issues. It sits on a DESK. It's not carted around. This is terribly disappointing and probably my last mac.

i, like the million of other people that have left reviews here, have had nothing but trouble with my power adapter. first one i had, melted away. i called apple and they sent me a new one. well thats all fine and dandy. but now its maybe been almost a year since i have had this one, and already its starting to do the same things! you would think with all these horrible reviews something would be DONE about it.
i just dont get why this review page even exists if they arent listening to what we have to say..........
i dont feel like i should have to cough up $80 every year just so i can use my computer. thats so insane.

MagSafe end is fragile!!!
Written by MG from Brazil

I've gone through 2 of these things in 3 years. With both, then end wore out and either shorted out or the connection broke. at 80 bucks a pop, I got by with rigging it with some tape and solder. Bottom line, the magsafe feature is a good conceptual idea, but it hasn't stood the test of time.
