Apple.... FIX THIS PROBLEM!
Written by EL from Lancaster
Nov 10, 2009
It is not just this power cord that goes.. My husband had a mac book pro and his did the exact same thing. They work for a while then all of a sudden they stop. This one looks like it's burnt on the inside of the magnet...I am usually a big supporter of apple products, but this is ridiculous! And for 80$ a pop to replace it, it's enough to make me hopping mad!

Why Hasn't Apple Fixed This Problem Yet?
Written by EG from Lexington

I was excited when I saw the design of the new MacBooks when they first came out a couple years ago, in no small part because of the new charger. My old iBook went through 3 chargers during the 3 years I had it, and now my MacBook needs a new charger and I've had it less than 2 years. Every charger has the same problem: the wire gradually fraying and eventually breaking at the point where it meets the piece that connects to computer. I have never been rough with my computers, though I will admit that the new magnetic connection does get pulled out of my laptop more often then the old iBook chargers did, mostly because anything that slightly brushes any part of it (like one of my cats walking by) seems to make it fall out immediately. I am not pleased that I'm going to have to spend 80 dollars on another one of these dysfunctional chargers just to have it break again in a year or two, but I guess if I want to keep using my perfectly functional computer that's what I'm going to have to do. Thanks a lot, Apple.

Fire hazard

I too have had the cord melt and in fact start a small fire on my floor. This isn't cool at all, especially since you can't use your MacBook without one!

I'm happy with it, despite crummy plug piece.

I have had my Macbook for 2.5 years and have had none of the problems described here with my power adapter. For everyone who is experiencing wires disconnecting where the cord enters the brick, I would recommend (on your next adapter) not wrapping the cord around the prongs that flip out of the brick. They are a cool idea, and useful sometimes, but the continued stress of bending the cord 90 degrees or more everyday when you pack up your laptop is definitely not good for it. It's the same thing that happens to video game controllers when you put them away by wrapping them up in their cords. For the people whose cords caught on fire ... yikes. I hope you are using the product with correct laptop.
My only problem with the product is that the two-prong plug piece that connects to the brick is pretty flimsy. Mine gave out after about a year of plugging and unplugging, it just came apart, so minus one star. You can replace it with a plug piece from another adapter, like your iPod adapter or with one from an international adapter kit, or you can just do what I do and carry the three-prong cord extension around. Unfortunately, Apple does not sell this piece separately.7 of 13 people found this useful

Incredibly frustrating!

The cord of my first charger had the end burnt after a year or so of usage.
Charger #2 suddenly stopped working and cannot charge after barely a year of usage despite being religiously plugged in a safe outlet and following instructions as on the manual and from reviews here so as not to repeat the errors of Charger #1.
As it turns out, I'm not the only one who complained about this. Lots of people who wrote reviews here experienced the very same thing!
Dear Apple people, if a lot of people already experienced this, why not change your product? Do you want to earn from us loyal Mac users this way?
Because of this, I'm thinking of switching back to a PC and telling the world about it in my blogs, forums, etc. If it can't be fixed it's goodbye, Mac!19 of 19 people found this useful

Worst Apple Product

After 1 year of use (I treat my mac like a baby) the connection failed like so many people have explained. I assumed I had an isolated case and fixed the cord myself. Another month later the wiring within the box broke. Unable to fix this I bought another charger... Same thing happened. Now on charger #3. Very disapointed Apple.
Added note: Why is a replacement charger so expensive!?!?!?21 of 21 people found this useful

Melt Down
Written by JS from Irvine
Oct 28, 2009
This charger has been nothing but a headache. Working on my MacBook one evening I kept getting a faint scent of something burning, like chemical (plastic). I found out that narrow cord where it connects to the magnet connector was brown discolored and melting. The wire completely melted and rendered the charger unsafe and useless. After speaking with the Genius Bar they replaced the MacBook batter (saying it was faulty) however, they did nothing when I presented them with the melted power cord which could have possibly lead to the battery failure…

Terrible Terrible Terrible!!!

I have had my MacBook for just over a year. This power adapter is a dangerous piece of garbage! It wasn't until I saw the sparks flying that I realized the connection between the block and the skinny cord that plugs into the laptop was almost completely severed! I have been extremely careful with this power adapter after the horrible experiences I had with my old ibook power adapter. I certainly didn't think Apple could do worse than that when designing a new adapter. Apparently I was wrong. I think that if your power adapter almost sets your house on fire Apple should redesign the thing and, at the very least, replace the adapter for free. $79?? C'mon!!!

Not the quality I expect from Apple....

I have a MacBook and have just bought my third adapter in a year and a half. After the original one broke I did some reading to figure out what I had done wrong. I suspect that I was not careful enough in unplugging from the computer as it was the part the junction between the magnetic fitting and the cord that broke. When I got my second one I was meticulous, I always made sure to grab the plug itself to remover from the laptop but this time the cord melted on the end next to the brick from it getting so hot. I saw that somebody suggested getting the 85W one. Maybe I'll try that in 6 months when this one is dead. I also find it ridiculous that no other brands make these because of the patent on the mag safe technology. At least with the old adapters you had the option to try something else. I've never found an apple product that had so little thought put into the design. I thought Apple was better than this.

Sure way to start some sparkles
Written by GS from Dublin

I can not believe the price of a replacement charger. Mine is crackling and sparkling after very little use and without any damage whatsoever. Or, it just stops charging without any reason, until some wiggling and bending and pushing it kick starts it again. Surely this is a lowly part of a "Think different" concept, but it is a tremendous letdown nevertheless...

I've had numeous problems with my Mag "Safe" power adapter. The brick gets extremely hot (at one point burned me) and for the past 6 months i've had loose connection problems in the magnetic connecter which goes into the computer and have had to play with the cord to get it to work. Now finally it does not work at all and apple will not replace it because i am 9 months out of warrenty. Now i have a 1300 dollar macbook i cannot use without spending even more money on these low quality adapters just so i can have it break yet again.

I have had my MacBook for 3 years and each year I have to purchase a new adapter. In this day and age, surely Apple can come up with a better product. The price is ludicrous and insulting. I have had Macs forever but this adapter is not up to standard. I have spent the last month jiggling the wires to get a connection. Come on Apple, apply some of your staff's great brains to this little problem.

MacBook power adapter weakest link in an otherwise wonderful laptop
Written by SM from Tupper Lake

I purchased my MacBook early in 2008: I am on my third power adapter and I rarely take it out of my home. The cord twists and frays where it connects to the power box at the plug-in end. They are very expensive to replace and there is no 3rd party product that works as well or better. I have had Macs since the early 1980's and always liked the quality of the product: NOT SO WITH THIS DEVICE! When I get my next adapter in the mail in a few days I am going to tape the cord where it enters the box, coil the cord several times and tape it to the box. I hope this makes it last a bit longer. This is such a disappointment to me! Apple you have failed us!
