Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Good Adapter
Written by JF from Claremont

I love the MagSafe adapter, because I see so many people pull their computers onto the floor because someone trips over the cord. I, like it seems very few others, have had no problems, and I don't take particularly good care of mine. I think it's possible Apple may have a production problem, rather than a design problem.

2yrs no problems here

Am I the only one who hasn't had a problem. I have had mine for two years now and no problems. I'm looking at the reviews because I need to buy a second one for traveling. Yes the transformer (the brick) gets a little warm which is normal and doesn't effect my use. Love my MacBook!!! And despite the bad reviews I will be buying a second power cord.

Great Powerbrick
Written by WA from Carson City
Mar 3, 2009
I have 2, from 2 different computers, i have had them for about 2 years now, and both are fine. I love the magsafe thing, and would never buy a computer without it (unless it was something nostalgic like an old apple laptop). but it would seem that most of everyone else has problems. I use my charger so much, and use it in places like backyards, etc, and it still works fine! So I don't know why everyone else is getting these problems?

60W Power adapter very flawed
Written by BP from Santa cruz
Mar 3, 2009
I have to go buy my 3rd adapter in just over 2 years. I thought it was due to wrapping the thin cable up maybe too tight, so with the second one I was very careful not to stress the little cable. Everything ok until today when having the computer plugged in for 2 days (no stress on the cable) it is so hot that the little cable is melting and failing right up against where it attaches to the adapter box.
Everything is so good about Apple - how could they miss this and not FIX it 2 years ago???? They really need to fix this or in the ads say "Only $80 per year you pay for new power chord". It's VERY un-green as well, since the little cable cannot be replaced.
You guys really need to fix this.28 of 33 people found this useful

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
7 months and it doesn't work
Written by JL
Mar 2, 2009
This power adapter seems good at first being able to come right off if someone kicks it.
But the magnet is so strong that it will stretch the wire out. Now i have twist and turn my chord for ten minutes to get it to charge and then it doesn't even charge for more then 10 seconds. The chord is 80 dollars and people don't have time to keep replacing it ever 6 or 7 months. 80 dollars is a lot of money. To much for that.16 of 21 people found this useful

Hit or Miss
Written by MB from Ashland

I've had my MacBook since the week they came out and only now- three years later- have I started to have the slightest of problems with my adapter.
My problem is different than the other users I've seen- it seems the connection doesn't always fully connect and I have to play with it a little to get it to charge. Not a big deal, but still annoying, and I assume it will get worse (although I've decided to upgrade to a MacBook Air now so I won't be able to confirm future cable problems)
Considering I'm on my computer almost 24 hours a day (I do keep it on 24/7) I think this cable has lasted remarkably well. And I can't count the number of times that the magnetic connection has saved my laptop from devastating destruction by a dog walking through the wire or a fellow passenger at an airport nearly being tripped by not paying attention to where they are going. In my opinion the benefits of the wire far exceed the problems.
My husband however has not been so lucky with his MacBook Pro. He bought his laptop a year after I got mine and is on his third power adapter. The first two were official Apple and frayed almost right away, the third one that has lasted was an aftermarket product that has a opaque plastic boot over the plug and the first inch of wire preventing it from moving around at the plug and fraying. Maybe Apple could learn from their aftermarket imitator and apply this obvious improvement to the product they are charging seventy bucks for. Just a suggestion.17 of 19 people found this useful

Excellent PowerSupply
Written by WK from Rockville

I had done helpdesk in an enterprise gov network for several years and worked extensively deploying and troubleshooting user PC's & Macs. I think many of the bad reviews for this were b/c of mistreatment. These powersupplies are excellent! Compare them to a standard PC laptop PS, its no contest. These are small, easy to store & the magnet thing is innovative! I have had 4 Macbook Pro's since they went Intel and never had a single problem with these PS units.

Apple should be ashamed of this shoddy (yet vital) powerbrick.
Written by PD from glendale
Feb 25, 2009
Like the first reviewer said, when the cord frays you have to replace the whole brick. Not very green apple. I travel a lot and have had to replace the brick twice in the last 18 months. If you wrap the cord up at all when you pack - this "cheap link" will last only months before you cough up yet another charger.
I even went to home depot and got some plastic strengthening tubes. That maybe added a few months to its lifespan but was in the end 'lipstick on a pig'.
STRENGTHEN the 2 ends of this cord that ALWAYS break, apple. Stop nickel n dime-ing the extras.35 of 43 people found this useful

Let me just, this is the third power cord I have had to purchase due to fraying. I like that it is magnetic. I like that it has an extension, but I wish the darn thing would last. It doesn't hold up to travel well at all.

Be Rationale in Your Expectations
Written by AG
Feb 24, 2009
I'm writing this due to the large number of "the brick heats too much", "my children aren't gentle & the cable breaks", or "it's so expensive!" etc style reviews.
First: the transformer / rectifier circuit is a piece of power electronics, even on much bulkier blocks of similar wattage, you get a lot of heat. Compress it in size, you get more heat. I don't know about the rest of the world, but when I bought a Macbook, it was on the theory that I wanted something lightweight, small and portable. Heat from the transformer (a given for any laptop) was not a concern.
Second: If we're talking under the age of thirteen, a laptop is the *wrong* *computer* to be using with children. I don't care who made it, children are not laptop friendly. What you are looking for is an iMac or a Mini (assuming you're a dedicated Mac user).
Finally, a price tag of 79 dollars, when you consider the rare earth magnet and the extremely compact transformer / rectifier circuitry, you better realize that it isn't going to be a twenty dollar product. Miniaturization costs $.
The arguments regarding the inability to isolate the transformer from both cords does hold merit (though I'll note that this is typical of most AC/DC adapters on the market). As to fraying / melting within 6 months, I've had mine since early Sept 08 & not a single sign. I regularly abuse my cord & it has held up like a pro.
Try something: google "65 w power adapter" and notice how many adapters have the cord hard wired on one side, and how the price tends to stray to the 50, 60 dollar range (72 for an HP laptop 65w adapter). Also note that the brick size is simply massive by comparison.19 of 39 people found this useful

Unfortunate Design
Written by TT
Feb 20, 2009
Our MacBook is the favorite computer in our family. There are four of us; two adults, one teen, one pre-teen. This computer gets moved all over the house, and the kids, while not "reckless" certainly do not "baby" the power cord. Cool concept, poor execution. Totally agree with prior posts on lack of strain relief at the backshell of the magnetic connector. The cord is a unit design with the stepdown transformer, which means when the insulation cracks, the cord AND transformer BOTH need to be replaced, to the tune of $79.00 PLUS shipping. That means trashing a perfectly good transformer to replace a cord & connector that should not cost more than $20.00. (Not a very earth-friendly design) There should be a computer-to-transformer cable, that plugs in to the transformer. In all other things, we LOVE this machine and the capabilities, but this power cord design was not thought through, and I can't imagine that it underwent appropriate testing in real world conditions. It would be GREAT if Apple was able to retrofit these transformers with a new removable 12 vdc(?) cable assembly. The transformer DOES get hot. Hollywood, Maryland

Junk

Like in so many of these other reviews, my power cord has frayed away from the magnetic connector several times in the past few months. I never mistreat the cord and only ever disconnect the power cord by tilting the magnet. On top of it all, the price for a new power adapter is outrageous! We are being ripped off!

My hand is cramping from holding the cord
Written by SR from Houston
Feb 19, 2009
My hand has a cram from holding the power cord all the time. I got my macbook in August of 2008, it is now February 2009. in 6 months my cord is dead. unlike most other people, my cord is not melted or cracked, the only problem I seem to be having is a short right where the cord plugs into the magnet. the only way it charges is if i push the cord in. my cord does not do much travelling, once a month to my mothers house and every now and then if i am going to a friends house. other than that, it stays in my room.

The Windows Me of laptop power adapters
Written by MS from Zacatecas
Feb 18, 2009
I love my Macbook, but these power adapters are abysmal. Actually that's not quite it. The power adapter part is OK, it's the shoddy cable that's the problem. The grounding shield starts to fray inside the outer insulation with just normal flexing of the cable over a few months - it doesn't matter how much you baby it, sooner or later it gets down to just a couple of (barely) unbroken conductors that then overheat (especially if you're recharging a completely discharged battery) and melt the insulation. And let's be frank, you shouldn't have to baby it. Really it's so chintzy it reminds me of the quality of the plastic toys you find in a 99 cent store. First it starts with the pilot LED going out all the time, then the next thing is you find the wire melted either at the magsafe connector or else at the power brick itself where the cable comes out. Really, Apple, for $79.00 these things ought be MUCH more durable. I have audio patch cables of similar diameter that I have used and abused for 15 years that have never frayed apart like one of your power adapter cables. How do I give it a negative two stars?

Definitely not kid proof
Written by JJ from Birmingham
Feb 16, 2009
Be warned this is not a kid friendly adapter. If your child pulls out the cord then puts it in their mouth its gone. Also the thing gets so hot. And the cord to base and connection are so flimsy and weak. The MacBook Pro's cord is slightly thicker making it better suited to handle wear and tear. Even though the wattage is designed for a larger computer it seems to work out much better in the long run.

I think that this product is really great. Especially with the MagSafe feature, its just waay more than i thought it would cost. The problem is that you cant use your computer without one.. so you pretty much have to buy it.

Works Fine for Me
Written by DG from Oak Hill
Feb 8, 2009
I've had mine for a year now with no problems. The magnetic connection is, if anything, a little too sensitive since I often using my MacBook where the power cord can be strained, I appreciate a safety feature that always avoids having the computer thrown to the floor or the cable damaged.
Anyone who compares these adapters to the big old, heavy Dell portable adapters, hasn't been forced to buy one-after-another of those things. They fail regularly as they burn out, or the cable breaks. Early on, the Dell adapter was recalled after it was found to have the potential to cause fires.
The Apple adapter is light, has a feature to allow compact packing for travel, and does all that it is designed to do in your Apple system.12 of 25 people found this useful
