Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Great design

CLEARLY other people who reviewed this product don't have the slightest knowledge of maintaining technology. When you take the plug off the laptop DO NOT pull by the cable. INSTEAD grab the plastic connector and tilt it up or down until the magnet loses attraction. Other reviewer proved they think that cables are made from solid steel chain on the inside, never to break. Electrical components should never perform the tasks of mechanical components.

Potential Fire Hazard
Written by RM from Rockville
Mar 26, 2009
While the concept of the magnetic cord is functional and conceptually sound, the product in execution is very, very dangerous based upon my recent experience.
I have had my MacBook for just under a year, and it is used in my family room as a general purpose computer for the family. The cord is disconnected 3-4 times a week in general use. Several days ago, the cord started to separate from the magnetic connector, and heated to the point that is was hot (as opposed to warm) to the touch, indicating that wires within the cord were exposed/subject to shorting. I do not know what safeguards the MacBook has to protect it from damage should the wires cross, but that is a very real possibility based upon my recent experience. In addition, when I examined the cord, wire was open and exposed.
As Apple does not provide any alternatives to the current design, caution must be exercised to prevent damage to the cord.15 of 28 people found this useful

I have had a mac book pro for just over a year and use it heavily. The power adapter 'popped' and made a weird smell and now does not work at all. Now I have to spend $70 on a new one? This is ridiculous!

Very Irritating

Well, at first, I thought all these negative reviews were crazy! The original power adapter that came with my mac lasted 3 years! I replaced it in December 2008. I just had to order another one! What is the deal? I love my mac and all my mac products. I even love the fact that it is magnetic...genius engineering; however, it is very disappointing that it has obvious flaws that apple needs to correct.

Not Happy

I have had my MacBook for 8 months and take very good care of everything and now my power adapter is not working like so many other peoples. This makes me very upset seeing as how I have always used Macs and NEVER had a problem for 20 years now...seriously apple, you need to go back to making quality products and not just pumping out junk to the masses...

I have had my 2008 aluminum Macbook for nine months, I don't know why everybody is having so much trouble with their Magsafe power adapter. This is a very convenient power adapter! This is truly the best power adapter I have ever used!

I am going to have to buy my THIRD cord...the first one, I admit, I didn't take very good care of, but after having to replace that one, I have been incredibly gentle to the new one! But, to no avail. I have to replace this one too. I must say, I am extremely disappointed.

Power adapter - the only reason not to buy a MAC
Written by WD from New York
Mar 12, 2009
When I purchased my first MAC I was told by many friends not to do so because the power adapters constantly broke and cost over $80 to replace. Now that I have finally experienced it - 8 months after buying the thing - I am now trying to pass the advice on to you.
I had my adapter in my bag along with a book that weighed maybe 4 ounces. When I got to a friend's house I pulled out my computer and noticed even though nothing seemed wrong with the adapter, the computer wasn't recognizing that it was plugged in. I noticed two of the four pins in the plug had been pushed in a bit. Because of this the entire adapter was useless. Even though the adapter can easily be separated by the manufacturer into three parts, its not, its in two, but even if you wanted to only replace one of the two parts, they don't sell replacements like that. So if the smallest thing goes wrong with your adapter you have to pay $80 to replace it and wait weeks for it to arrive.
If you are not rich and can't afford to waste $80 every six months - which is when they break do to overheating, frayed chords, having the socket section of the cord loose its spring due to everyday use, or just not wanting to work - don't buy a MAC. In three years it will cost you the same price as a regular PC laptop. Donate the extra money to charity, buy your wife a nice scarf, it is a better investment.

Good Product with One Flaw

Like many others I love that my macbook will not be broken if one of my roommates steps on the cord, however the cable melted where it meets the magnetic end and came off. Now I am left trying to get the money for a new adapter before the battery runs out and I can no longer do my school work. To me the price seems high seeing as school takes up almost all of my time and food takes up my money but, I guess that it is needed to make a profit.

Good Adapter

I love the MagSafe adapter, because I see so many people pull their computers onto the floor because someone trips over the cord. I, like it seems very few others, have had no problems, and I don't take particularly good care of mine. I think it's possible Apple may have a production problem, rather than a design problem.

Am I the only one who hasn't had a problem. I have had mine for two years now and no problems. I'm looking at the reviews because I need to buy a second one for traveling. Yes the transformer (the brick) gets a little warm which is normal and doesn't effect my use. Love my MacBook!!! And despite the bad reviews I will be buying a second power cord.

Great Powerbrick

I have 2, from 2 different computers, i have had them for about 2 years now, and both are fine. I love the magsafe thing, and would never buy a computer without it (unless it was something nostalgic like an old apple laptop). but it would seem that most of everyone else has problems. I use my charger so much, and use it in places like backyards, etc, and it still works fine! So I don't know why everyone else is getting these problems?

60W Power adapter very flawed
Written by BP from Santa cruz
Mar 3, 2009
I have to go buy my 3rd adapter in just over 2 years. I thought it was due to wrapping the thin cable up maybe too tight, so with the second one I was very careful not to stress the little cable. Everything ok until today when having the computer plugged in for 2 days (no stress on the cable) it is so hot that the little cable is melting and failing right up against where it attaches to the adapter box.
Everything is so good about Apple - how could they miss this and not FIX it 2 years ago???? They really need to fix this or in the ads say "Only $80 per year you pay for new power chord". It's VERY un-green as well, since the little cable cannot be replaced.
You guys really need to fix this.28 of 33 people found this useful

7 months and it doesn't work
Written by JL

This power adapter seems good at first being able to come right off if someone kicks it.
But the magnet is so strong that it will stretch the wire out. Now i have twist and turn my chord for ten minutes to get it to charge and then it doesn't even charge for more then 10 seconds. The chord is 80 dollars and people don't have time to keep replacing it ever 6 or 7 months. 80 dollars is a lot of money. To much for that.16 of 21 people found this useful

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Hit or Miss
Written by MB from Ashland

I've had my MacBook since the week they came out and only now- three years later- have I started to have the slightest of problems with my adapter.
My problem is different than the other users I've seen- it seems the connection doesn't always fully connect and I have to play with it a little to get it to charge. Not a big deal, but still annoying, and I assume it will get worse (although I've decided to upgrade to a MacBook Air now so I won't be able to confirm future cable problems)
Considering I'm on my computer almost 24 hours a day (I do keep it on 24/7) I think this cable has lasted remarkably well. And I can't count the number of times that the magnetic connection has saved my laptop from devastating destruction by a dog walking through the wire or a fellow passenger at an airport nearly being tripped by not paying attention to where they are going. In my opinion the benefits of the wire far exceed the problems.
My husband however has not been so lucky with his MacBook Pro. He bought his laptop a year after I got mine and is on his third power adapter. The first two were official Apple and frayed almost right away, the third one that has lasted was an aftermarket product that has a opaque plastic boot over the plug and the first inch of wire preventing it from moving around at the plug and fraying. Maybe Apple could learn from their aftermarket imitator and apply this obvious improvement to the product they are charging seventy bucks for. Just a suggestion.17 of 19 people found this useful

Excellent PowerSupply

I had done helpdesk in an enterprise gov network for several years and worked extensively deploying and troubleshooting user PC's & Macs. I think many of the bad reviews for this were b/c of mistreatment. These powersupplies are excellent! Compare them to a standard PC laptop PS, its no contest. These are small, easy to store & the magnet thing is innovative! I have had 4 Macbook Pro's since they went Intel and never had a single problem with these PS units.

Apple should be ashamed of this shoddy (yet vital) powerbrick.
Written by PD from glendale

Like the first reviewer said, when the cord frays you have to replace the whole brick. Not very green apple. I travel a lot and have had to replace the brick twice in the last 18 months. If you wrap the cord up at all when you pack - this "cheap link" will last only months before you cough up yet another charger.
I even went to home depot and got some plastic strengthening tubes. That maybe added a few months to its lifespan but was in the end 'lipstick on a pig'.
STRENGTHEN the 2 ends of this cord that ALWAYS break, apple. Stop nickel n dime-ing the extras.35 of 43 people found this useful

Let me just, this is the third power cord I have had to purchase due to fraying. I like that it is magnetic. I like that it has an extension, but I wish the darn thing would last. It doesn't hold up to travel well at all.
