Mine melted today!!!

I've had my MacBook for almost 3 years, and never gave the power cord a thought. Then today, I noticed it wouldn't light up, and then I noticed the frayed plastic near the magnetic plug-in. I was shocked! I was checking online to buy a new one, and not only was I shocked at the price, but the other reviews. Before today, would've thought others were rough with theirs, but I KNOW I haven't been.
I agree, it should be redesigned. If I wiggle around with it, it will light back up, but now I'm going to unplug it before bed tonight, as I'm afraid of the fire hazard.

The original one died after a year - cable started fraying.

I duct-taped the second one's cable firmly to the magetic tip so that yanking on the cable wouldn't be an issue. This extend the life by 4 months. It stopped working last week and the magnetic tip was getting real hot- borderline fire hazard. When I removed the tape to check- the connector was still in mint condition. It fried from the inside.

Now onto my third. Not Happy!

Good, but melted itself eventually

Pros:
Does what it should, powers computer.
Magnet is nice, that does what it should too.

Cons:
It ran hot enough long enough to melt its own cord, right where it goes into the "box" part of it. Like others say, this can happen, and if and when it does, you have to get a new cord. You might avoid this by running it off the battery, but after four years, my battery life is about an hour, often less.
New cords are kind of expensive at $80.

I have to say I have now replaced my power adapter also twice in 2 years. I love Mac products and I am disappointed they have not improved the design. I do not believe it is covered under the apple care package. It seems like there is nothing else to do but purchase a new adapter again for $80 plus tax...:( anyone have suggestions out there?

Too hot to handle

This is the second MagSafe Power Adapter I have had to replace in the past year due to melting. The adapter gets so hot during charging that it melts its own cord. The Genius at Mac told me not to run my computer while plugged in, however, the battery does not last a full work day so it is necessary to at times run it while it is charging. Be cautious about running your computer while plugged in. I love Mac software, but this situation is unacceptable.

Apple needs to Redesign This!

This is the second one we've replaced for my wife's Macbook in 2 years. I also have to replace mine for my Macbook Pro that is just over 1 year old. I have been an avid Mac user for 13 years now and have gotten quite a few others hooked because I've raved over the quality of Apple products, but this is unacceptable. I love the magsafe plug, but apple needs to redesign the flimsy cord to make it more durable!

Power Cord

I bought a Macbook for college last year. Today for the first time the Power block stopped working. After some messing with the smaller cord I was able to get it to start charging again.
The cords will be able to take a beating, but be careful you do not get cuts, twists, or kinks in the thin cord or else your screwed.

the darn power adapter like everyone is experiencing is junk! i've had my laptop for almost 5 months and i cant believe it that i have to replace the adapter already. the insulation from the brick separated and the wires inside are exposed. it was still charging my laptop for 2 days then, i noticed it stopped charging and the adapter was sooooo hot it burned my hand when i touched it. luckily, Apple replaced it for free. im scared now after reading all these other reviews that i will have to replace it again and again. where can i find $80?

i've had mine for about a year and 3 months and just started experiencing problems, so i'm pretty disappointed. i'm reading these other reviews and see i'm hardly alone. this problem is not acceptable. we pay a premium to own a mac- they should have reliable equipment and products. step up, apple- how about a recall??

loss of clickiness

my charger is losing its clickiness of the retractable folding plug and also the retractable wounder has the same problem. it also gets very hot and burns me a few times. there needs to be more insulation and sturdier clicking mechanism.

HORRIBLE!

I have taken very good care of my macbook, but out of nowhere while it was plugged in and charging it completely stopped working, while it had already been charging!! I thought that maybe it was the plug, but nope! None of the plugs at my home or work worked. I just changed the battery which was expensive and now I have to get a brand new adapter? Lower the prices or make a better adapter thats worth the price.

The adapter got soo hot that it melted the connection points. Apple needs to work on this issue or lower the price since replacing it is bound to happen. thermodynamics???

Order of connection is important!

For those of you who find that you only get power/light the magsafe connector every once in a while when you plug-in (but while you're plugged-in power remains constant) here's a tip.

The order you plug in the adapter is crucial. Yes, it's stupid. Yes, it's annoying. Yes, you can't find it documented ANYWHERE. Never the less, the order is key.

OK, without further jibber-jabber, here's the magic:

1. Connect your AC adapter to a wall outlet. Do not have the Macbook side (the "magsafe" connector) connected when you do so.

2. Connect the magsafe connector to your Mac. You will get a light on the magsafe connector.

There is a slight caveat. If you connected your power brick in the wrong order, you will have to perform the following steps:

1. Unplug the power brick. The order does not matter, but you will need both ends disconnected. Wait approximately 15 minutes or so. I have not timed it exactly when I have made the mistake of hooking up the power adapter in the wrong order, but around 15 minutes is what it takes. It may take longer for a Macbook Pro since it has larger capacitors.

2. Hook the power brick back up in the correct order listed above.

I theorize that the little brain in the power brick (the one that lights the green light when the battery is charged and the orange light when it is not) gets confused when you plug the adapter up in the wrong order, and to reset the brain you must let the capacitors in the power brick drain. Capacitors will hold an electrical charge for a decent amount of time, which is why you must wait a few minutes before plugging back in. Once the power is drained the brain resets and you can try again.

Poor connection

I was crossing my fingers that I would have enough power to go to the Apple site to see about ordering another adapter, because I have also been having trouble with the cord. I was hoping that there would be some reviews and maybe someone else was having the same trouble as I. I have had my computer about 2 years, so I guess I have been lucky that the cord hasn't malfunctioned before now, however it is definitely a flaw in the production of this piece of crucial equipment. If you can't charge up your computer you are screwed, Apple, please do something about this. I can't afford to keep replacing the adapter.

Power Adapter Failure

I have owned my MacBook for only 5 months and my magsafe adapter has started to malfunction. It goes on only 1 out of about 15 times that I plug it into the wall socket. I don't understand if it will burn out completely, if it has some kind of protection against uneven voltage that blocks its functioning for a few hours or what. My main problem is that I live in Bolivia and aquiring a new one is a big problem and I was feeling certain that I had bought a fine piece of equipment until this adapter started giving me problems.

It's nice that the cord is magnetic, but a HUGE nuisance that, like most of the other reviewers, my adapter is coming apart where the cord meets the magnetic part. This wouldn't be such an issue if the replacement power adapters were cheaper than almost 80 dollars. Apple really needs to do something about this - either making the adapters more reliable or lowering the price of the replacements.

Very unhappy

I've just blown my THIRD power cable for my Macbook. The 'block' gets so hot that the thin wire running to the laptop will melt and pull out of the 'block.' This is the third time this exact same problem has happened to me. Apple should really look into a more heat resistant material for making components that the know will be under a lot of strain.

i love apple macs, but i HATE these stupid weak, flimsy, and overpriced chargers! I have had my laptop for a year now, and now it doesnt even charge my laptop because the cord is like messed up/ bent and loosened so now it doesnt charge at all! thanks apple, now i cant use my 1000 dollar laptop. i hate it. if you can avoid apple for this reason, do so.

mac needs to make some changes and lower the price. most people with macs go through at least 3 every year... for the price, you'd think it would have much better quality.
