    Stopped working shortly after purchased

    Written by MR from Portland

A few months after buying my macbook the power adapter started failing: won't charge when plugged in unless I spend a significant amount of time wiggling the cables. For the hefty $80 price tag, this quality is unacceptable. From other reviews, it's pretty clear that it's not just me being unlucky.

    Extremely Unreliable and Overpriced

While the MagSafe Power Adapter is innovative, thin and sleek, it is not durable. This is my third MagSafe in the span of only a little more than two years. This is completely unacceptable and even insulting given the hefty price Apple charges for a product so cheap to produce. The MagSafe has potential but only if Apple focuses more on substance than looks. There is a reason most laptop manufacturers have much thicker power cords.

I've had my Mac Book for a year and a half and have experienced no problems with my power cord. My daughter has had her's for two years at college - no problems either. One tidbit of advice - the power cord SHOULD be plugged into a power strip, not the wall outlet - to protect your laptop from power surges during electrical storms. This also eliminates the "falling out of the wall" syndrome some people experience (although mine has never slipped out).

I won't argue that Apple should not beef it up a bit, but just like their iPod headphones, Apple seems to like using very light gauge wire whenever possible. Maybe a more rugged "traveler" model could be introduced...with heavier wiring and a better fit when using a wall outlet. Apple are you listening?

I'm writing this review with 6 minutes left on my laptop. i've had this laptop for less than a year and the only problem with it is the adapter. It just stopped working. I have to purchase another one at their ridiculous prices. I think I should buy another backup just in case this wants to break down at another important time.

Lawsuit waiting to happen...worst apple product ever.

I bought and received my macbook pro (13 inch) four days ago. I think I've maybe used it for a total of 10 hours, including the time the power's been plugged in.

Well, today I noticed two areas at the end of the power cord (thin section leading up to the magnetic thing) where silver wires were exposed. The laptop had stayed on my desk the whole time, so nope, it's not "wear and tear." I called customer service who said they'd ship me a replacement overnight, but I'm not really at ease since this is obviously a major product defect with a good chance of recurrence.

Apples' achille's heel is definitely it's power adapter devices. I've been using Apple products for nearly 20 years but basically every computer post ibook era has seemed to have defective power chords. My titanium powerbook (pre magsafe era) had a power chord that eventually frayed and snapped at the end. And now this.

What's worse, the defect is a MAJOR fire hazard. It is basically caused by wires overheating, and the plastic casing melting as a result of that. I'm surprised no one has gotten seriously injured as a result of this defect. They need to recall this product or they'll lose customers.

    Deficient Adapter

Written by MM from MERION STATION

It is so annoying that this adapter does not stay in the wall socket. Also, this is my third power adapter since getting my MacBook Pro because the back simply falls apart. The cost of the replacement is terribly high. It would seem with all the complaints I've noticed on the Internet that Apple would take care of this problem.

I'm writing this review on my fast dying 13' macbook. The wire has come apart on my charger where the cord enters the white plastic brick. I just came on the site to price a new one when I noticed all the other review's. I'm more than a little ticked off, I'm out here in an 18-wheeler, can't just drive up to the apple store for a new one! And the $80 price is just shocking. I rely on this computer to track my day trading online, and feel very let down by poor quality, at least beef up the cord a bit. But the reason I'm really writing is to respond to a snide comment (tip) about not tugging on the cord etc. and won't have the problem!!! dude, no one, I repeat no one, is more careful with their stuff than me, I don't yank it, I wrap it up n' pack it with TLC. So let's just be honest and admit it's substandard.

I can't afford to buy ANOTHER charger. The part where the cord leads into the magnetic end broke yesterday. On the actual block there's a small crack (from overheating?) I swear I'm not gonna keep buying it from here; it's too expensive. If I can find a 3rd party charger I will, because this is ridiculous. I've replaced it already and the battery too. Lately it's been overheating to the point where it burns to touch it. I'm in college now, I can't keep throwing out money for something that won't last. Yes, it charges, but it's seriously bad because of all this. And what's with the cable wrapper built in? I think it just damages the cable faster.

I have had my Macbook for about a year and the connection stopped working, and the price of a new one is ridiculous! I have owned bottom of the line PC laptops that had way better power cords and lasted way longer. Between this and my screen going black unless it is tilted at a certain angle, I have to say buying my white macbook was a huge waste of money. We all like Apple products because of the great quality over a cheap PC... I guess the gap in quality between the two in closing fast.

    APPLE- PLEASE FIX THIS!!

Written by SB from Fort Wayne

    Sep 16, 2009

Apple makes the best products! I wouldn't buy any other brand. However, in the year that I have had my Mac I have already been through 3 chargers. And this problem is not only with me. All you have to do is read the other reviews on here to see that people love their apple products but their power cords are junk! To go through three in one year is ridiculous when in the past I have only ever needed one for every other laptop I have owned and they lasted multiple years. And $70 is a lot to pay to replace something three times a year. I don't know why apple can make the best computer products but when it comes to something simple like a charger they make something that is cheap in quality but not in price!! Please fix this problem Apple! I know I am tired of reordering chargers!!

Attention Apple: MacBook power adapter needs to be RECALLED

Written by EB from Middle Village

    Sep 15, 2009

My MacBook is only 1 year old and the power adapter cord end, the magnetic end which is plugged into the MacBook fell apart. It started to smell like something was burning and I noticed that the wires were exposed. Obviously, from reading all the reviews here there is a big issue with the power adapter. I thought these things only happened with Dell Computers (I'm an ex-Dell customer) and new to Apple. A slight redesign of this product would solve the problem, by having a separation point from the actual adapter part that plugs into the outlet. I hope someone from APPLE reads these reviews. It certainly would help them in the future and that's what it's all about the future of Apple...........good reviews......more Apples in every household..........lol!

yep - I'm also disappointed that my 3.5 MONTH old macbook no longer can get a charge from its charger... and I'm floored at the cost of a replacement - by the way, why do I have to get an entirely new charger if only the one part is no longer working (wires going into magnetic plug are curling!) I agree with earlier posting of making this more green.

but what i found so funny was when I was going through all the recent review comments that every once in a while there would be a flutter (usually three in a row) of people that loved their adapters... could these be "plants" from the manufacturerer......... hmmmm

    pros and cons

    Written by NV from Rexburg

    Sep 13, 2009

    Pros:
    - Easy ability to wind the cord for travel.
    - Magnet breaks away when it should, doesn't break away when it shouldn't.

    Cons:
    - The unit is to heavy for a lot of my outlets. It stays in for a while, but falls out very easily due to weight. This fundamental design flaw is a huge annoyance, enough to outweigh the good features of this product for me.

My love for my MacBook borders on the inappropriate so I was quite upset when my power cord started to fail. The performance of my MAC has been so consistent I was sure I was to blame somehow, until I read the reviews. MAC definitely needs to resolve this issue.

smoking cord bullies me out of my lunch money

    Written by CH from Hyattsville

    Sep 2, 2009

like the recent reviewers before me, i too am suffering from a smoking/smoldering power cord.

I wish this cable was on recall. $79 to buy a new one is an unfortunate unexpected purchase for this (nearly broke) student and a hassle to get one before my computer battery completely dies!!

I'll be more careful to delicately wrap the next cable up - but still, the adapter should have lasted more than the two years i've had it. The macbooks are tough and can endure a lot, why can't the cables???

The magnet idea for the charger is awesome but my charger began shorting out after about a year and a half of use. After that it stop working completely. This problem is surprisingly common and needs to be addressed. 80 dollars for an seemingly inevitable repair is saddening.

    Power Adapter for 13" MacBook

Written by GT from North York

JP from Portland - your Adapter must be from the same batch as mine. Smoke and burn today where the thin wire meets the brick.
Is this a recall problem like the discoloured keyboard?
This laptop is a gem - it has been a reliable workhorse until the HD died last year and now "the brick."
Anyway we can keep it going until a Snow Leopard tablet arrives??

    please address the cord connections

    Written by JP from Portland

    Aug 31, 2009

I am watching my Macbook charger cord slowly smolder and smoke. Where the cord connects to the brick, the covering has desintegrated, the wires are fraying, and the connection is intermittent, requiring a careful placing of all the parts just so, or no charging.

Yes, I frequently wrap my cord to travel. Yes, I am careful to not strain the material. A company as great as Apple should either:
    a) fix the mechanics
or b) fix the wiring of my (and hundreds of others) chargers at no cost. I LOVE my mac, but am frustrated by this problem.

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook)

Written by OV from Fort Hood

    Aug 30, 2009

The Apple 60W power adapter is very bulky and heavy. Because of it's bulkyness and weight, the charger fails to stay plugged in the wall and more often than not, unhinges itself. As a result of constantly unhinging, the charge does not stay and causes a shortage in the wire. It's very annoying and very expensive to replace with a hefty price tag of $79. Apple designers and developers need to come up with a much more smaller and portable power adapter for the MacBook and its sister books.
