Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Connector Great, Cord Material Awful
Written by CT from Titusville
Aug 29, 2009
First of, let me say that I love the Magsafe interface!! It's a brilliant idea, and the connector, itself, works great!
However, Apple has chosen a really awful material to make the cord (between the AC adapter and magsafe connector) out of. It is just too thin and flimsy.
Like many users, my cord eventually frayed after only a year of normal use. I have never had any other cord do this.20 of 20 people found this useful

Dim green light flickers and wont stay lit
Written by KM from new albany
Aug 28, 2009
I replaced the default cable to my mac near december of 2008 about a year after i got my original macbook pro, The only reason i really replaced it was because the cables were parting company with the brick. However there was nothing else wrong with it so i stored it just in case of emergency, im so glad i did now! A week before i attend a convention im faced with my replacement cable flickering on and off, not charging and my computer going dead only because the cable discontinues its charge even though its plugged it and theres no visible signs of defect. I'm going to try re-taping the old one and taking that one with me to the convention and getting a new cable when i return. But i dont understand, after a few weeks of use both cables stopped giving me the "amber" charge light when charging and instead gave me a very dim green light that i could barely see unless i covered the connector with my hand? Is this normal? When i plug the replacement in now, the dim green light appears and then flickers very very rapidly, (youd have to look close to notice it was doing this) and then flicks off, and the charge drops. I'm a poor art graduate who had to scrape her money together to buy this laptop and I love my mac but seriously? $80 for replacements is highwat robbery when according to the reviews here only last a maximum of 6-7 months IF your lucky like I was... This needs to be recalled and the price reduced if there is no alternative.

Bad Charger Bad
Written by JR from Wilmington
Aug 26, 2009
My original Macbook charger lasted almost three years, then the pin springs broke leaving the pins stuck inside. The replacement broke in 3 weeks. And now two months later the second replacement is dead. All three of them with the broken spring problem to the pins. To top it all off, the warranty went out two weeks ago.

Cord Separation and Hazardous Heat
Written by ZA from LITTLETON
Aug 25, 2009
While my charger lasted an entire year and a half (I'm guessing), it has just given out because the cord between the adapter box and the Magsafe plug has separated. Unlike most complaints I've heard of, though, it hasn't separated from the plug, but from the adapter unit itself - I never yanked the plug off, instead applying upward or downward pressure to disconnect.
This is the first ever power adapter I've had (from ANY company) to separate in such a manner.
Also - the heat generated from this adapter is far higher than that of any other adapter I've used, and it has caused thermal damage to almost every surface I've placed it on. I've resorted to placing it atop a mat (one of those ones meant to go under hot dishes) to prevent further damage around my house.18 of 22 people found this useful

Low quality - not up to par for Apple
Written by PR from Warren

I have had this charger for 3 months with my Macbook Pro and, like others, the cord has separated at the magnetic connector. I feel that it is inevitable that I buy a replacement which is a real bummer. After spending $3000 on the computer, I'd rather not buy an $80 replacement charger every 3 months. Come on Apple, we all expect more from you.

I have read everyone's reviews, and I have to agree. The product is unsafe. The plastic started to burn, and of course now it does not work anymore.

Melted.
Written by NN from Santa Monica
Aug 20, 2009
I loved having a power cord, and it's an ingenious idea to make it magnetic; however, my cord melted itself last night and now I only have 30% of my battery left.
It is a fire hazard in my opinion. It's been overheating my computer and only when it actually melted itself did I realize how hot it was getting. Wow.
I'm taking it into an Apple Store to get checked out. I love Apple products, but I'm sad that this one isn't working so well.14 of 15 people found this useful

Lasted almost 3 years
Written by MG from Broadview Heights

The charger for my MacBook is finally burning up after almost 3 years. I say finally burning up because it is always VERY HOT! I am not complaining because it did last 3 years but it is extremely pricey to purchase a new one. I do have to say that I travel a lot and the power cord is always being used and put away several times a day. Overall I think the product has been quite durable as I do not always store it the way it should be stored.

I got my charger four months ago and one day it just stopped working. In a closer inspection I noticed that the wires had pulled out of the head of the charger. I had been treating my charger quite well. I am extremely disappointed.

i love the mac book! i just hate the cord! the plastic started melting and got EXTREMELY hot... it made my battery hot, too! the wires are now all exposed and the plastic melted almost all around already within an hour. this is where you attach it to your computer... horrible! i called the store to see if there is any recall, what a fire hazard and she said unless i have apple care, they will not replace it. there needs to be a recall for this... it's a fire hazard!

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
flimsy, expensive to replace
Written by JN from Langhorne
Aug 14, 2009
the power adapter that came with my unibody macbook is quite simply the most poorly made apple product i have experienced yet. after a mere four months of owning my macbook, the power cord decided to stop working. the only way i could get it to work was if i pushed VERY hard against the section where it met the computer. luckily, the genius at my local apple store gave me a replacement for free. mine had no visible defects, so i think i'm lucky. however, i could easily see wires becoming exposed, and apple really needs to review their adapters' integrity. i'd rather have a clunky, dell-like adapter that WORKS and doesn't BREAK and BEND after four months than another pretty, communist-white apple product that is inferior. also, $80 for a new one? no thanks.

Fire Hazard
Written by RF from Nokesville
Aug 12, 2009
It's unfortunate that there's no lower rating than one star. I'd heard rumors of these adapters catching themselves on fire, but I always attributed that to poor care by customers.
Two nights ago, the 60W MagSafe adapter for a first gen MacBook I own began to smoke. The cable shielding just outside of the reinforced section attached to the power brick had melted, showing bare and singed wire beneath. While this adapter isn't new, it has been well cared for. Furthermore, most reports I've read indicate that these tend to burn up on the MagSafe connector end. This is the first time I've seen one burn through at the brick. I'm lucky, as is everyone else in my house, that this happened while the MacBook was in use. If this had happened during a bathroom break, this could have led to a house fire.
It's unfortunate that a product I love so much comes with an adapter that, from what I've been reading online today, has a long history of fire incidents. In the future, I am going to have to remember to unplug all of my Apple notebooks whenever I leave them unattended, no matter how quickly I plan to get back to them.

Oh my god, what a money sucking hunk of...
Written by TB from East Brunswick

Alright, well I have had the pleasure of owning two of these wonderful devices and I have to say that I am thoroughly dissatisfied. For what I think is a rather high price, these chargers seem utterly unreliable. They keep overheating where the charger meets the mac book and breaking down. Apple seriously needs to come up with a solution to this problem. Now my battery is at 39% capacity and I guess that'll have to last me till a new charger comes in the mail. No doubt I'm going to look for a more reliable product on the website.

Very weak connection to magnetic piece and wires easily fray. Too expensive
Written by CC from SAINT PAUL
Aug 5, 2009
I received a Macbook via my school, and I've had it for less that a year. Already the charger has stopped working. I noticed a while ago that the area where the wires meet the magnetic piece that plugs into the computer started fraying and falling apart. This angers me because now my laptop's battery is dead and I am not able to charge it. Eighty dollars is a lot of money for a brand new charger when the original charger should be made a bit sturdier. Other people I know who have the same type of charger have also had this problem. Spending eighty dollars on this product should not be a necessity right now.

I'm lucky so far
Written by JS from Southaven
Aug 5, 2009
I have read all of the reviews on this site about the power adapters for the MacBook Pro, MacBook, and MacBook Air. I was very surprised to discover how unhappy people were with them. Mine has always worked well for me. However, (and I say this in the nicest way possible) the thing isn't an armored vehicle or anything. You have to treat it like what it is: an expensive, delicate piece of equipment, because that's what it is.
The real thing i wanted to say here though was that whoever it was that posted how you could use the 85W adapter for Macbook Pro on the MacBook is wrong. You would burn up the battery after an extended period of time and possibly a few other components associated with the power system as well.15 of 21 people found this useful

The guy who told you to get the 85w power cord for a MacBook that clearly needs a 60w cord is a idiot. If you do that you could hurt zap you MacBook. Use the cord that apple designed for you laptop. Besides, if you use them correctly they should not brake for years to come. If a school can use these cords and not brake them you can too.
