Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Industrial design flaw with adapter
Written by CL from Acworth
May 2, 2009
No one can argue that we pay a premium for the design, elegance, and reliability of Apple products. This sets an expectation that the product is well designed and supported.
I have not found this the case with the 60w adapter for the MacBook that I own. I have had issues with heat (that little white bugger gets hot enough to burn you). Now I have an issue with the demise of the adapter. No amber or green lights now, just dead.
So here is to another $80 for a part that has failed due to poor engineering.
The company has admitted a design flaw with the keyboard cover and the cracking issue, when will they own up to this issue?18 of 26 people found this useful

Dell Quality for Twice the Price
Written by ED from Murray
May 1, 2009
After a couple months, the magnetic part separated from the rest of the cord, so it was difficult to get the power to stay connected. After I got it replaced under the warranty, the same thing happened with the second cord. I lived with it until today when it sparked and stopped working altogether. Of course, now the warranty has expired, so I get to pay $79 for another likely poor quality cord.

reliable and well designed

I have used my power supply with little to no regard for its care and it hasn't failed me in over 9 months. The ease of connecting the mag safe connector in the dark when power begins to run low, and the ease of wrapping the vord for storage in my backpack are big pluses!

Durability Matters
Written by AD from Baltimore

Ok I have had my Mac Book for about 2 months and already the charger is beginning to fall apart in although it works when I put tape all around it. I think that is really unnecessary and maybe instead of making the charger look so nice and cool they should focus on the fact that it is very easily broken.

Not too pleased...
Written by JD from Cheshire

I've taken very good care of this adapter, being careful to wrap the cord and place it back in my bag after each use. I took it out to plug in my MacBook this morning, and to my surprise, the plastic coating around the wires at the base of the adapter had melted, and the thing started smoking. Good thing I never leave my MacBook plugged in when I'm not home. I would have burned down my house! I'm stuck, so I'll have to purchase another, but I'm not at all pleased.

Power charger of MacBook
Written by FT from Gif sur Yvette
Apr 13, 2009
I bought a new MacBook for my daughter July 2008. After 9 months, it does not charge the battery. She can work with it with the main but the battery is not charged. I did all the usual disconnecting, removing the battery and resetting, etc. No good.
There is no sign of physical failure anywhere. The amber or green light simply does not come on.
The battery charges with my MacBook pro charger, so it is not the battery or setting. After so many complain about the charger, it is a shame that Apple still sells faulty chargers. I hope I can get it replaced under the guarantee.18 of 27 people found this useful

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
time for a redesigned 60w macbook power adapter
Written by TK from Portland
Apr 9, 2009
Like a lot of Apple products, there is a lot of stress on form of the product placed above function of the product. The designers need to remember that the function of these power adapters should be reliable and consistent. After problems with my unit failing because the thin cord wore out (1 inch from the junction to the converter box) I read lots of the reviews and see that many people are upset with the lack of durability. There is no reason for Apple to not offer a better constructed, more durable model. Everyone needs to write to Apple to encourage them to redesign this flawed product. It also is ridiculous that replacement units cost so much money ($79.00). The cost is far above the value of a poorly designed product which performs weakly.

I have found no problems with the MagSafe Power Adapter. I was looking to buy a second one for my home use and saw that it was only rated 2 stars. I have to say that this is the best power adapter I have ever used and I am buying a second one so I have ready power at home and in the Lab, (office for those who don't work in Labs).

Cool Idea, Poor Execution
Written by DS from Regina
Apr 6, 2009
The MagSafe idea is cool, but the cord wrap on the adapter is no good. It's convenient, but puts a LOT of strain on the skinny cable as you wrap it. This is the part that has failed on my power adapter and I knew from Day 1 that I should watch our for it. It needs more protection like the fat cable that extends the adapter's length.
Also, for those of you who have had issues with the part that connects with the computer, make sure you remove the connector by tilting it up or down or side to side to disconnect the magnet. The Magsafe adapter was designed to be pulled from the sides rather than straight out from the computer. the magnet's strength is most powerful when pulled straight away, and with very little to hold onto, you're GOING to tear the insulation and ruin your cord. Tilt it and it comes free easily.31 of 38 people found this useful

Dissappointment.

I've gone through two of these Adapters in less than 2 months. The first one frayed at the magnetic head on the end of the cord and now my second unit just doesn't work (no visible signs of damage). I love Apple and OS X, usually being very satisfied with their products but the MagSafe 60 Watt Adapter has failed. A redesign is warranted I think.

fixit

When the adapter fails, try pulling out the 3 middle pins (2 larger and the smaller middle one)on the magnetic connection with a needlenose pliers. Carefully! Make sure they do not go past the length of the outer 2 pins (There are 5 total)This has saved many from buying a new adapter. With continued use, the pins gradually sink into the plug, preventing the contact with the Mac. Good Luck.

not of fan of the magnet
Written by LS from New York

in 20+ years, i have never lost a laptop because i tripped over the wire and it yanked the device off a desk. Now, i have this magnetic thing that is constantly falling out, everytime i move the laptop. its a laptop, it should work on a lap and yet, the slightest realignment on a non flat surface, i.e., said lap, makes the adapter fall off, disconnect, not charge... This is the first complaint i have ever had about an apple product and i am dissapointed.

Bad design

This is the first laptop I had problems with a power adapter, I am a heavy laptop user and this is my 8th laptop, I already change this adapter twice!!, the first time Apple care took care of it, now this second time, the laptop is out of warranty so I finished paying for it. I love the laptop but the design of this power adapters are obviously bad!, Apple, please just bite the bullet and recall this adapters, I am sure that your smart engineers can come up with something better...

Owner Beware
Written by AO from winnipeg

Like many of the others who are not satisfied with this product I noticed two of the four pins in the plug had been pushed in a bit as well. If I applied hand numbing pressure where it connects then it would hold the charge as i held it, sometimes i could even get away with letting go slowly while it still charged. Eventually, however, this didn't work and i was forced to order another charger. Apple definitely needs to fix this defect because i have had my charger for about a year and a half. A lot of the people who have written reviews seem almost shocked that it has lasted them 2 or 3 years, well... when you are paying good money for any product it should last you much longer than that. Instead of paying the crazy price online at the apple store i went on ebay and found it for 30 dollars... problem solved, sort of?

Problems with the connector
Written by AB from REXBURG
Mar 30, 2009
I have had my macbook for less than five months. Already I need to buy a new adapter, again! The original one lasted less than two months. My current one, which barely works, is only two and a half months old. In both cases, there is a problem by the connector. It gets too hot to touch, and the insulation on the wires becomes misshapen. It must have a short in it. This is unacceptable. I have taken every precaution to avoid strain, yet it still happens. As much as I love Mac OS, I regret getting my macbook because of the power problems.

easy to fix
Written by RH from LONDON

I have read all the negative comments. Yes it is very " unMacish " to have something break b4 it should. That being said.... This thing has saved my MacBook Pro several times. When it finally did break... at the magnet part... it was so easy to fix... A little solder... and a little shrink wrap.... Voila! Only two wires to deal with... Much easier than the old four wire thing.

Horrible Product
Written by CL from Pascoag
Mar 29, 2009
I am currently on my second MagSafe Adpater. The magnetic feature is convenient, but the rest of the design is very flawed. I had to buy another adapter after the original overheated where the wires attach to the magnet.
I now fear that my second adapter is nearing its end. The same thing is starting to happen, but on the other end (where the thin wire connects to the part that plugs into the wall or extension. I am extremely disappointed with this product.
I really do not want to spend another $80 on a new power adapter. I really hope that Apple improves this product in the near future... or at least comes out with another option.7 of 13 people found this useful
