Oh my god, what a money sucking hunk of...

Written by TB from East Brunswick

Alright, well I have had the pleasure of owning two of these wonderful devices and I have to say that I am thoroughly dissatisfied. For what I think is a rather high price, these chargers seem utterly unreliable. They keep overheating where the charger meets the mac book and breaking down. Apple seriously needs to come up with a solution to this problem. Now my battery is at 39% capacity and I guess that'll have to last me till a new charger comes in the mail. No doubt I'm going to look for a more reliable product on the website.

I as well have experienced the MagSafe adapter failure. My adapter overheated and then it stopped working. It no longer charges my laptop.. I wonder if there is a recall of this piece?

Very weak connection to magnetic piece and wires easily fray. Too expensive

Written by CC from SAINT PAUL

    Aug 5, 2009

I received a Macbook via my school, and I've had it for less that a year. Already the charger has stopped working. I noticed a while ago that the area where the wires meet the magnetic piece that plugs into the computer started fraying and falling apart. This angers me because now my laptop's battery is dead and I am not able to charge it. Eighty dollars is a lot of money for a brand new charger when the original charger should be made a bit sturdier. Other people I know who have the same type of charger have also had this problem. Spending eighty dollars on this product should not be a necessity right now.

    I'm lucky so far

    Written by JS from Southaven

    Aug 5, 2009

I have read all of the reviews on this site about the power adapters for the MacBook Pro, MacBook, and MacBook Air. I was very surprised to discover how unhappy people were with them. Mine has always worked well for me. However, (and I say this in the nicest way possible) the thing isn't an armored vehicle or anything. You have to treat it like what it is: an expensive, delicate piece of equipment, because that's what it is.
The real thing i wanted to say here though was that whoever it was that posted how you could use the 85W adapter for Macbook Pro on the MacBook is wrong. You would burn up the battery after an extended period of time and possibly a few other components associated with the power system as well.

The guy who told you to get the 85w power cord for a MacBook that clearly needs a 60w cord is a idiot. If you do that you could hurt zap you MacBook. Use the cord that apple designed for you laptop. Besides, if you use them correctly they should not brake for years to come. If a school can use these cords and not brake them you can too.

No Problems with 60W Power Adapter

    Written by TW from Bellevue

    Aug 2, 2009

After reading some of the reviews on the 60W MagSafe Power Adapter, I am surprised and should consider myself lucky. I've had mine since September of 2006 and have not had any problems or issues with it. I do have to replace it now only because my puppy chewed it - that is my own fault for leaving it within her reach :o)

    It's awful.

Written by SA from Trabuco Canyon

I've have my Macbook for just over a year, and I've just ordered my third adapter. While the magnetic plug-in is a great idea, it's ineffective, because the cord itself is weak, and after a few months of use, the components stab through it. The wires don't just bend, they break. And there goes another $80.00.

Mac Book 3 weeks old Mag Safe already FAILED!

    Written by JB from Oxford

    Jul 30, 2009

I recently purchased a second Mac Book just 3 weeks ago and the Mag Safe adapter already failed. In reading the reviews I am amazed / disappointed Apple hasn't done anything to improve this critical component by now.

Trying to replace it isn't easy either. I have to make an appointment with a Genius to evaluate and determine if I should get a new one. (I'm using my other Mag Safe from my other Mac Book to power right now it doesn't take a Genius -- Apple or otherwise -- to comprehend the problem.) I am very disappointed in Apple this time.

3 weeks of gentle use and then failure is an unacceptable life expectancy &/or poor quality control. This component really needs to be improved asap.

    Falling Apart WAY too fast

    Written by AF from Coraopolis

    Jul 29, 2009

Apple is to be the best of the best - not when it comes to the magnetic power cord. While the magnet part is really awesome the area where the cord connects to the led/magnet is lacking. This is my second cord to fall apart in this area.

I've had this MacBook for less than 6 months!

On my third one in 2 years and I take very good care of it but it just breaks. Both times I got loose wires and it over heated as well. The magsafe is a nice idea but its poorly constructed.

    too easily broken

    Written by DF from Chappaqua

The power cable into the magnetic plug housing is not nearly durable enough. The wire sheathing pulls away from the plug housing, and causes the connection to fail. We have four MacBooks and are replacing a third power supply, at $80 a pop, because of this design deficiency. DISAPPOINTING.

I too have the frayed magsafe connector

    Written by KK from Redding

    Jul 26, 2009

I will soon be ordering my third magsafe power supply for my MacBook though this time I think I will probably go with a generic version to save money. Like many others, the problem is in the magsafe connector itself. The cord is separating from the connector.

My suggestion... The cord to connector has improved (this power supply did last longer than my previous one). But it is a waste of Mac owners' money to have to buy a new power supply for such a common failure. Apple: How about having the cord connect to the power supply with a quarter turn fitting. Then we only need buy a new power supply to Magsafe cord with one goes bad and the look will be nearly the same. Sell it for say $12 and everyone is happy... well, happier.

    Overheats and wore out quicklky

Written by MN from Mercer Island

    Jul 26, 2009

My charger overheated which seems to have melted to plastic around the cable causing it to fray quickly. It has no stopped working all together.

Without the extension cable it is very short, but there's no convenient way to wrap up and store the extension cable.

Magnet connection is very good though and I like the red vs green light when it's charging.

    Overheats, yet passes all tests?

    Written by SH from Blacksburg

    Jul 23, 2009

My adapter, like many others, has overheated, causing it to smoke and the outside of my adapter to turn a light brown despite being less than a year old. However, despite the overheating, when I took it to my apple authorized repair person, they said it passed all of the tests and so it couldn't be replaced. It then overheated again after I had been reassured it was fine. I refuse to buy another one when apple refuses to fix my faulty one. These really do need to be recalled. It was smoking! You can't tell me that is an ok, working piece of equipment.

magnet is great, but the cord is very flimsy

    Written by AY from Stow

    Jul 22, 2009

The magnetic connection is great. However, I am now buying my third cable, the first two having worn out and frayed at the connection points even with careful use. And for such a high price, it should not be a disposable item.

    Need to recall this product.

Written by DB from Farmington Hills

    Jul 21, 2009

Mine is less than a year old and the cord is coming apart right where the led light is, apparently just like many others. Still works and I was going to put off buying another but I never considered that it could be a fire hazard. Yikes! Guess I'll find my nearest Apple store and see if they can help me out. Glad I read the reviews.

Written by MA from NORTH RICHLAND HILLS

They still haven't recalled this product? I'm outraged to find this is a reocurring issue. I set my macbook on my bed as I left the room. Walking back in I smelled the distinct sent of burning and started searching everywhere. Behold, I come to find my cord SMOKING and melting RAPIDLY before my eyes. I pulled it off as quick as possible at what I assumed was a reasonable distance from where it connected only to still burn my fingers. This was all in a matter of minutes. If I had not returned, because of forgetting something, I have no doubt my bed would have been in flames!! I expect fire hazards from thousands of christmas lights being left on a christmas tree for days NOT an APPLE product. It's almost a joke. Especially for how much they charge. I wish I was exaggerating just because I can't even believe how ridiculous this is. I have just moved to Mexico from the US where the closest Apple store MIGHT be 4 hours away. Ha, maybe something I should have considered in my decisions to relocate. I love you mac, but my love only goes so far.

    ZERO STARS.
