Excellent battery, great lifetime. 523+ cycles and still going!

    Written by NR from Ottawa

    Jun 25, 2008

I have had this battery for almost 2 years, and have used it every day.
I have over 523 full charge cycles on it and am just now starting to notice my battery life degrading. When it was new I would get anywhere from 5.5 to 6 hours out of it. Prior to hitting the 500 cycle mark, I would easily get over 3.5 hours out of it while doing some pretty intensive stuff like games and HD movies. After the 500 cycle mark however, my battery life is dropping to about 1.9 to 2.1 hours. Since most Li-ion batteries are limited to 500 cycles or 3 years, I am rather happy.

Unfortunately Sony shipped some defective batteries to Apple which is why some people are complaining about expanding battery cases, if that happens, you should contact Apple immediately.

    BATTERY BUCKELS

Written by DM from South Portland

    Dec 28, 2007

I purchased my 17 inch MacBook Pro in the summer of 2006.....this week I have noticed the battery is buckeling. Called Apple and was told that they could do nothing. I would have to purchase another battery. I questioned the service rep if Apple had read the comments regarding this battery on their web site and that obviously the battery is defected. Apple rep just keep telling me that there was nothing he could do. So, now, I am going to have purchase another battery...which will probably prove to be defective as well. I am extremely disappointed with Apple.
This computer is costly; it is hard to fathom that Apple will not replace defective batteries.
Maybe it is time for Congress to look into this China made defective product along with the lead toys and poison pet foods coming from China.

    Fat Battery

I bought my mac book pro on june 2006. Its been great until one day i found my battery all swollen up. It still worked though, but it lasts less. Couple of days before the incident the battery didnt last all the time it was supposed to last. The mbp suddenly shutted down because of powert failure. im confident that apple will work on this and give us new batteries.

    I think there's a problem...

    Written by KH from Ajax

Based on the reviews on this site, I'd say Apple has a problem with batteries.

I have a Lenovo at work, and the original battery gives me 6 hours of use, and that's 2.5 years after purchasing it. New, it was about 7 hours.

My apple is down to 20 mins, and it's only 18 months old. It's been declining steadily since it was about a year old, and now it's toasted. Blech

Not a problem and decent life time and capacity

Written by JB from San Diego

    Jan 20, 2009

I've been using this battery since DEC '06. No bulges, or any other problems. At first I got a 3-4 hours/charge. After a couple of years this is down to 2-3 hours. I think that's pretty normal.

BTW I made the mistake of "calibrating" the battery several times in a rort. I mistakenly thought that might improve the charge capacity. In fact it reduced it "a lot" like maybe 30-60 minute. SO don't do that!

    disappointed

After 2 years, I now have a bloated battery. The bettery is really out of shape and I am a bit scared to use it. The computer now shots down when the battery level is still >10%, not like before there was a signal showing the battery level as a reminder.

I guess I don't have any other choice but to buy a new one, expecting a lifetime of maybe 1-2 years. That doesn't make me feel good.

Is there a program for replacement?

    MacBook Pro 17 inch battery

Written by KW from Pompano Beach

Just after 1 year, I noticed my battery cannot hold a charge. Of course the warranty says if it is a damaged battery, it will be covered. So I was told by customer service, it will not b/c I had it plugged in to long. Okay my fault. Still the battery should last longer than one year and hold a charge. When it is hot, it is scary. I am a flight attendant and I see how the lithium polymer batteries in any computer overheat. They are dangerous and can start fires. In training, we put out one with a halon extinguisher and the flame keeps reoccurring! I am probably more scared of the damage the battery can do than it keeping a charge. The last thing I want to do is be faced with putting out lithium batteries on airplanes as my business passenger's computer is ruined. Still the battery life and the overheating really do need to be looked into.

    Why won't they fix this?

    Written by TP from Shelby

    Sep 28, 2007

My macbook pro 17inch had about 3 and a half hours usable time when I got it three months ago. I followed instructions and cycled the battery on schedule. That I think is an excuse, or rather "busy work" for the client, to keep from addressing the problem. Already, I have less than an hour left on a full 100% charge. A replacement battery is the same thing. SO, if you buy the 17inch, remember that you will spend hundreds of dollars on batteries, if you don't have the luxury of keeping it plugged in everywhere you go.

    So much for applecare...

    Written by JR from Mandeville

    Jun 26, 2007

I've experienced the same swollen battery issue after only a year of use and about 40 cycles (re-charges). The unit stays plugged in on my desk most of the time - so it wasn't damaged from "wear and tear" - just Apple's poor manufacturing and quality control. Even with my AppleCare coverage they refuse to replace.

i was working on my macbook pro and suddenly the mouse went crazy and it was difficult to type things right, then i notice that my battery was the problem... it kinda bend... so i took it off and i think it was somehow my fault so i was kind of mad with myself so i went to the apple store online to check the prices of the batteries and guess what was my surprise? its not the first time it happens... so i guess the macbook pro comes with a disposable battery... that's not "pro"

I switched from Windows to Mac (Intel) in 2006and my MBP is already the third MacBook that was replaced in only three years. Now my battery died. I had Toshiba notebooks, Dell notebooks even a no name with Windows.
NEVER ever had the problems that I have with Apple now.
I am more then disappointed of Apple.
Will switch back to Windows as soon as possible (money issue).

    Warping hot battery

Written by TC from Pointe Claire

    Dec 30, 2008

Just like the many reviews here that talk about their warping hot battery, mine did the same. I paid $4000 CAD for my souped up Macbook Pro, and now I am terrified to invest any more money into a computer that may run the risk of catching fire and destroying all my important data. I agree that rechargeable batteries need replacing after so many charges, but for the cost of this computer, a little more attention needs to go into the production of a battery to accommodate it.

    Great Battery

    Written by TH

    Jul 5, 2008

After 3+ years of use my 17" MBP battery bloated. I'll be buying another one ASAP. For 3+ years of daily use it has kept up and worked great. Nothing lasts forever so I'm not too bummed out about it breaking after so long. I put in 10+ hours a day and sometimes have my MBP on 24/hrs a day.

Use is well and calibrate it every month and you should have a battery that lasts you for years.

    Puny.

Written by CH from Round Rock

    Oct 3, 2007

Okay, I love my MacBook Pro but one should think a battery would last longer. Mine lasted 16 months - guess I am luckier than those of you who only had yours last for 13 months. Pulled out the laptop in the airport on the way home from vacation and noticed that it wouldn't start up - I turned it over and saw that the battery was swollen!! I plugged it in when I got home and tried it with the battery in but after awhile the tracking went crazy so I took out the battery. I am glad that I looked at the reviews to see that I am not the only one having this problem. Thanks to those who rate products! As soon as I get a chance I am heading to the Apple store to see if they will make it right.

Time for more Apple + China bashing?

    Written by MD from Washington

    Jul 6, 2007

Add my complaint to the growing list of Apple MacBook Pro owners with a "bulging battery" problem. This one was "assembled in China". Like others, I've owned my 17-inch MacBook for about a year. Like others, I've not had batteries be a problem with previous Apple products. My specific problem at about 11 months was with the touch pad and select bar functions. Things were clicking too quickly, also staying locked on to functions in ways that wouldn't allow me to release the function. It affected the mouse operations as well. The buldge was becoming more and more pronounced. I've pulled the battery, and am just running on electricity -- to see if, indeed, the swelling battery was what was putting pressure on the pressure switches. So, far the keyboard and touchpad areas seem to be working fine.

My concern is if Apple hasn't fixed its supply chain problem. I need to buy a new battery, but can I get one that doesn't have the same defective design??

Batteries around 7-12 months go bad (hope it got fixed)

    Written by JV from Bartonville

    Apr 16, 2007

Currently I am experiancing a problem with my 8 month old battery of shutting down the computer at 80% battery health. It gives no warning and the computer goes dead. Currently the MacBookPro is being sent in for service (1 year applesupport) and Luckily the service center only needs the Mac serial number for the warranty. 2-3 working days for shipping, hopefully a new battery will fix the problem and I wont have the issue in 8 more months.

    Beware of this product

    Written by MC from Centennial

I do not recommend this product. After several months of use, my 17" MacBook Pro battery started exhibiting swelling such that if taken out of the laptop, it doesn't fit back in. I have not abused my machine or the battery so I was surprised to see this happen. The battery appears to be encased on all sides with a metal but the swelling is powerful enough to bend the metal.
