    The worst battery

    • Written by from Chicago

I've had my MacBook Pro for a little over 3 years and I'm going through my second battery. This one, with only 30 cycles, has a 55% "health" rating. In other words, it's trashed already (and it's proved it is). In three years, I now need to get a third battery.

I wish Apple would get decent batteries for their MacBook Pros.

    Another one bites the dust!

    • Written by from Winter Park

My battery just went this afternoon. I hadn't realized until reading here, but the mouse and some of the keys were sticking and/or not responding when pressed, until I took my exploded battery out. I had been concerned about the nuclear-hot base of the laptop, and had quit using the computer on battery power for a few weeks, until today. thank goodness it doesn't appear to have damaged the memory. Why so many dying batteries, Apple?

    Battery Bulges and Comes Apart

    • Written by from Portland

My battery also bulged and popped open on one side. It is the original battery that came with the computer I purchased in December of 2011, so it is 3-1/2 years old. I see that several other people are having this problem, and I hope that Apple will investigate it.

    Battery explosion - MBP 2007

    • Written by from Belo Horizonte

I see that several others are having the same problem as me. The battery in my MBP started to swell to the point where it opened like a flower. One of the cells is so great that one has the impression that the worst is yet to come. I wonder, with colleagues, if there exists some justification reported for the apple.

    17 inch MacBook Pro Battery

    • Written by from North Hollywood

My computer just passed it warranty 3 year mark, and the battery is bulging out the back. I have complained in the last two years that the battery and/or computer runs really hot fast, so I got a fan for it to sit on, but the genius bar wouldn't do anything about the machine running too hot while it was under warranty. I hope the battery didn't ruin the computer!

    Sane bulging battery issue

    • Written by from New Milford

I came home after the memorial day weekend to find my 2007 17" MBP was rocking on the flat surface of the table. Turned it over to find the battery was sticking out and the case has split open. I removed it and it actually got worse overnight. Right now it the battery case is warped and one of the cells inside has swollen so the case is split open.

I came here to buy a replacement and see others with the same problem happening at the same age in the lifecycle. Apple can you investigate?

    Battle of the Bulge

    • Written by from Columbus

This bulging battery issue has happened to two of our computers in my department. Is Apple giving an explanation for this? I thought maybe mine had overheated in the cabinet where I lock it up at night, but my Lenovo PC lives in the same cabinet, and it is perfectly fine. Buying 2 replacement batteries now, and crossing my fingers that these don't explode. What happenend, Apple??

    Battery case splitting

    • Written by from Seattle

    Hi,

This isn't so much a review, but I just wanted to reinforce the comments about this battery. In my case, the original is going on 3 yrs old and no longer holds a charge, I'm fine with that, it's lasted through a ton of cycles. But, after reading all the reviews, I realized that the reason my MBP was rocking when on a solid surface was because the battery was starting to bulge like others have noted. I took it out and also realized that the case around the battery was starting to split. I have since ordered a replacement.

I'd suggest people inspect their 17in MBP batteries sooner rather than later.

    Bulging Battery from 2007 MBP

    • Written by from Olathe

Wow! I thought the issue was only mine and caused from overheating. My battery from my MBP, purchased in 2007, is also starting to bulge. A few months ago, the computer started shutting down when plugged in and battery being around 63%. Just a couple of weeks ago, it's started to bulge, and is only getting bigger. My wife said today that she had to remove it completely because the trackpad was totally messed up with it in.

I give the battery two stars because I was hoping it would last at least 4 years from my purchase date (sept, 07), which it almost did, and because when it worked, it worked well, but still, the warping issue and messing up the trackpad is kind of scary, and not lasting for longer when the battery health is still adequate is unacceptable. With all these bad reviews, one would think Apple would replace them for free, but I guess that's just wishful thinking. They did replace my faulty Nvidia vid card for free when outside of the 1 year Applecare plan, why not this when it is clearly Apple who is at fault here and not the end users.

    Dangerous

This battery in fact is dangerous. Mackbook Pro 17" was sitting on my shelf unused for a year, pulled it out for an upgrade and saw the battery busted open.

    Embarassingly Poor Quality

    • Written by from Oviedo

I bought one of these at an Apple retail store a few months ago to replace a buttery battery that had lasted me almost 3 years...

Apple's first-rate replacement didn't even last 9 months or 400 cycles before it started to quickly fade into total uselessness. It doesn't hold a charge for more than 3 min now so I will be forced to buy yet another one or ditch my MBP.

Judging by the rest of the reviews here, my experience is the rule and not the exception. I feel abandoned just like I did when I bought my 1st Gen Apple TV...

    What a shame.

    What the _ _ _ _ ?!

    • Written by from Stevens Point

I noticed my mb-pro was tipsy and it took me a few days before realizing the battery underneath was swelling. Call me naive, but I never heard of such a thing. Luckily I took it out and now I can watch it continue to swell as it sits harmlessly(?) on an old table. I contacted a local authorized service provider this weekend and will have to wait until Monday to find out if there's any warranty deal (apparently not after having read all these stories - mine actually made it about 3 years). So in the meantime I'm going to keep an eye on that swollen pile of electronic scrap to see just how big it'll get. Maybe it's just a coincidence but the swelling actually accelerated after I removed it. Cool. Reminds of Terminator2 where he's driving along with young John Connor, reaches into his chest, pulls out his atomic power unit, tosses it into the desert and it explodes into a mushroom cloud.... Hey... I'm not in any danger, am I?....

Apple batteries are of poor quality

    • Written by from La Canada Flintridge

I worry about possibly buying a new MacBook with an internal battery given that this is the second rechargeable battery for this computer and it has now bulged beyond safety. What happens if I were to buy a MacBook today and the battery isn't removable???

This is definitely the low point for my Mac experience...

Apple should not be selling these

    • Written by from woodbridge

Unbelievable garbage. They have decent performance when new but after a year of normal use, and not allowing the battery to drop below 20% capacity, my second battery swelled up to the point that it busted out of it's casing.

Meanwhile, the original battery on my 15" powerbook is still holding a one hour charge.

    bulging battery again

    • Written by from Alexandria

Got a replacement battery after about 4 years of having the computer, because it was swollen to about twice it's size. Now, only about a year later, and the battery is bulging again. ARRRRGGGHHHH!

    My 2nd Swollen Battery

    • Written by from Montgomery

I have now had two batteries in a row swell to the point I can no longer work the trackpad. In fairness, the batteries have lasted about three years before this happened. I have been a Mac user since 1984 and this 17" MacBook Pro is the only computer where I've ever experienced the swollen battery issue. My wife and our children use 12-13 inch size laptops and no problems with theirs. I give the battery a good rating for operating hours, but low rating because they are expensive to replace.

    Another Victim of Garbage Batteries

    • Written by from Madison Heights

I'm going on my third battery now and it has really made me think about getting a net book or pc. The only thing slowing my switch at this point is the amount of money I have invested in software. Oh could you please add rating star for less than 1.

Disappointed with MAC Dangerous Swelling Battery

    • Written by from Fallston

You know, after 22 years in the IT field and being a PC-Windows user I finally decided to take the plunge to MAC and bought a MAC Book Pro for myself as a retirement gift from USMC. How disappointed I am after only 18 months the battery began to swell. I did not realize at the time that the reason there was a slight uneven area on the bottom of the macbook near the battery that it was because of the battery.

I had it in for service each year, just for a tune up to a certified Apple associate and never once did they mention the battery was beginning to swell.

I took the battery out myself for the first time this week only to discover it is so bad it bulges greatly now. My husband advised against any further use as it could explode.

In all the years of using laptop I have never had something like this happen. This is a laptop that only I use and if anyone else want to use it (children), they are supervised. With that said other laptops I have had are used by many all over my home and in a mobile environment. All have held up great, but the MAC used 90% of the time in a home office does this.

At this point I am going to see if Apple will replace this free of charge as it is obviously a design flaw and a danger. As it stands right now, I don't think I will be buying a MAC again.
