second one to convert to a sandwich

    • Written by from Wetzikon

I've bought my MacBook Pro four years ago. Never had a problem with the Notebook itself. after using it for two years my battery convertet to a sandwich. having warranty Apple replaced my battery but another two years the same thing happens. Apple says it's normal that a battery swells up to a sandwich and refuses to replace it. I don't think it's normal so if I could give less than one "star" I would...

    BATTERY BULGE DEFECTIVE

    • Written by from Herndon

Batteries bulge swell put pressure on track pad and not able to click. Had 2 batteries and both have done this with less than 250 cycles of charge!!!!! Overheating must cause this to happen and Apple will not warranty this!!!! How many devices out there use Lithion batteries and don't see this problem, just about every cell phone and ipod.

    Horrible

    • Written by from SUNNYVALE

I gave this rating a 2 stars only because there was no damage to my laptop. I noticed my battery wasn't holding its charge and realized, after checking the cycle count, that it was over 300. I knew I was due for a new battery so I removed the old one and strictly used the power cord until I could get a replacement. A few days later, I went to grab the old battery and noticed it had inflated and separated the casing of the battery. Luckily the thing wasn't installed. The replacements aren't cheap either! You'd think that if you paid over $140 after taxes, that the stupid thing would at least stay intact!

    Deffective Batteries? Dangerous? Need Recall?

    • Written by from Belfast

Same story here. (MacBook Pro 17 In, battery Manufactured in 2006). I inspected my computer closely and noticed that the battery pack had swollen considerably. I took it off immediately.

I've read many complaints on the Internet about these batteries, yet I don't see Apple recalling them for 17 inches Mac Book Pros. I have had many computers including PCs - Batteries don't swell unless there are defective and/or unless it has something to do with mac book pro overheating in general?

I hope Apple is aware of the issue and will offer a free replacement even though I'm out of warranty because it was working just fine until two days ago. I also hope the swelling/overheating didn't create any other issues.

    I'll let everyone know.

    warped 2x on me

    • Written by from New York

I had the battery warp when I first bought the machine which they replaced for free. Now it's done it again. Same thing, trackpad won't work with the battery in and the computer doesn't sit flat. Went by the apple store in NYC and was basically told tough luck.

I'm sorry but defective junk is defective junk, doesn't matter how long it took to happen, Apple should stand by their products and replace them no questions asked.

Looking for a cheap one online at the moment

    Me Too!

    • Written by from ALBUQUERQUE

I am on my second battery and now have the bulge and the inopportune shut down problem again. After all the R & D with the new products one would think a battery that would not quit in fewer than 2 years could be developed. I love apple products and will not switch but I am disappointed. Please fix this!

    Battery Bulge

    • Written by from Denver

Battery worked fine until a month ago. Suddenly battery life dropped. Two weeks later mousepad stopped working properly. Removed battery and found it warped and bulging.

Reading these reviews it seems like a lot of people are having this same issue with Late 2008 Mac Book Pro batteries!

    macbook pro 17" battery

    • Written by from Miami

second battery that pops out, and renders my computer "charge only" until I get a new one. It wont be from apple this time. I refuse to pay extra for another Apple battery; paid enough for my computer once.

The horrible quality of these batteries has made me regret ever buying my MBP. What a piece of cow pie... It's a terrible shame that Apple can make such poor products and get away with it. S my d, Apple. Never buying a laptop from you guys again.

    MacBook Pro 17" battery

    • Written by from New Britain

Just took my MB Pro out of the bag and there is this bulge underneath. I turn it over and my battery looks like it's about to explode. There is this bulge running down the middle where the silver pin is, all the way to the other end. I do a Google for the battery and there, lots of other folks are having the same problem. My MB Pro gets very hot too as though it's overheating. Is that from the battery? Anyone has further information on this to pass along?

    another bulging battery!!!

    • Written by from San Francisco

I thought Apple had resolved the bulging battery issue, after having to replace my previous laptop battery not once, but twice in recent years. Now, my MacBookPro 17", about three years old and *just* checked at a Genius Bar a few weeks ago has a bulging battery! Trackpad seemed to be going (acting wacky) and the 'puter shutting off unexpectedly all of a sudden. Well, tonight I happened to turn my very hot laptop over (also seemed to have been overheating a lot lately) and lo and behold, ANOTHER bulging battery! I'm off to the Genius Bar once again for a free replacement - NOT paying for a replacement on an obviously *defective" part. This is the 3rd time I've had this issue with an Apple battery. One of these days someone's going to get seriously injured by an exploding battery, and Apple is going to have a whole heap a' trouble on their hands! I cannot believe how many other folks are once again having the same &$#@ problem. FIX IT ALREADY, WILL 'YA, APPLE?!?!?!

Good Life Span - but poor low-power exception handling

    • Written by from Sioux Falls

The Apple Battery for the 17" MacBook Pro (I'm on my Third now) is actually been a pretty good performer for me, compared to what I've been used to on laptops like the Dell Latitudes. The Upside is that after two years of constant usage (usually plugged in, but three-four hours a day on battery) I continue to get about 2 to 3 hours of usage on the battery - truly excellent, and more than I would expect.

The downside is that this (and the last two batteries I've purchased from apple) have a problem wherein when the power runs completely down on them, it takes, on average, anywhere from 45 to 60 minutes (and never less than 15) to get them "charged enough" so that the Laptop will boot up.

What this means is that even though I have a battery capable of running for 2 1/2 hours, that if I let it run completely down, the laptop may be offline for as much as an hour - rendering the battery completely useless.

On the pro side, the first Laptop Battery I had bulged out, and Apple replaced it for free (part of the Recall List) with very little hassle.

I'd probably rate it closer to 2 1/2 stars than 3, we'll see what direction I move this review after my fourth battery has a year or so of use.

    Battery Died - Not covered

    • Written by from BURLINGTON

I have had my Macbook Pro for just over two years. Same as the rest of the posts, it started with unexpected shut downs then bulging. I was unable to use the Macbook with the battery. I called apple expecting a replacement, only to be told not enough people had complained about the problem to extend the battery warranty. I was told basically that I should have bought the extended warranty and I have to buy a new one. As a longtime Mac Customer with many products, I am really disappointed with having to invest more money into an already expensive product after just two years.

    Needs a Redesign

    • Written by from Pataskala

Just picked up my 2nd battery in 2yrs yesterday. Same issue both times, unexpected shut downs leading to a bulged battery that is useless. For the price we pay for these computers I'm thinking a good battery isn't asking too much. I really don't want to have to do my graphic work on a $500 pc laptop but I have more than a few friends with the latter and their computers have ran flawlessly through the years of college. Oh and their batteries never blew up either....

    2nd battery blew up

    • Written by from Coalhurst

I have had my 17" Macbook Pro for just over 2 years and I am now replacing the battery for the second time. This battery works great until it starts expanding and leaking fluid. It is a known issue and I also urge Apple to offer free replacements due to defect, the first time this happened to me a year ago Apple replaced it, now to find out if they will stand behind their products again.

Here's to hoping Apple comes through again for a loyal Apple customer . . .me.

    Battery Life

    • Written by from Columbus

I have gone through 2 batteries in the past 2 years. After my first died, I called apple and purchased another. While I was ok with the cost, I was NOT expecting to have to again purchase another in less then a year. I called tech support after a few months of the purchase as it was not lasting past 2 1\2 hrs. The tech had me go into the properties and suggested that with the amount of usage it was on track. Not once did they ever suggest anything about a calibration. I would have done so, and if it is true that it saves battery life by unplugging and not over charging, I certainly would would have done so. Unfortunately, it is too late for either, as my battery indicator is showing "Condition:Replace Now". I do not have a date in front of me, but it has been within a year of purchase.

I will say that while this is frustrating, I LOVE my MacBookPro and will NEVER go back to a PC. It took me quite a long time to switch to a Mac, and I am a bit sad that I lost out on so many years with this AMAZING companion....LOL.... But, really, it has been an incredible transition and have been able to do some pretty significant things with my students and groups.
