    Dangerous

    • Written by from Northfield

My battery swell about 1 inch outside of the carcass and it is also making the touch pad not to work. It looks like it is about to explode after one year of use.

    Overheating causes warped battery

    • Written by from Phoenix

The notebook gets so hot you can't even hold it, and the battery life is horrible, won't last more than 10 minutes without being on a charger... the battery also is warped caused by the overheating and doesn't fit in properly, which also might be why the battery life is so awful! I love Apple, but for such a pricey piece of technology, am very disappointed...

    MacBookPro 17" Battery is dangerous

    • Written by from Bruxelles

First battery bulged after 1.5 years. Even out of warranty, Apple changed it for free because they confirmed it was not normal. Fair enough.

Now, after 4 years, the second battery bulged for 9 mm. I detected it before the explosion and removed it from MacBookPro.

I fully understand that battery has a life cycle, but it is absolutely NOT normal that the battery bulged until explosion.

    This product is dangerous.

Too expensive to last only 4 months

    • Written by from Gainesville

I thought Apple spent alot of money in R&D but apparently they forgot to check the battery. Brand new it holds only 4 hrs of charge and gets so hot it burns your lap. 4-6 months later, it starts to bulge and basically becomes useless. I guess if I want something this reliable in the future, I'll save my self a couple grand and buy a PC.

    Love Mac . . . BUT

    • Written by from Westmoreland

I have been using macs for around 20 years. I teach graphic design in a public school. I have always used and been happy with apple products. Probably seen over 100 different units in my classrooms and personal use over the years. Love them and the apple care. But, this product has been a failure from the start. I have had 4 different batteries in 6 years. Even when the batteries are new the charge time is not good. Only about 2 hours. And the back of the laptop gets so hot you can barely touch it. Apple has replaced the battery a few times, but clearly there is a problem that may include the charging system. I know of others with other models who have had no problem. This unit was over $3,000.00 new. They should have replaced the entire unit knowing problem would reoccur.

    Defective product - avoid!

    • Written by from San Mateo

I have owned many laptops and many batteries over the last 15 years, and NONE but Apple's would fail by bulging to twice their size and nearly ripping my Macbook apart from the inside. Naturally, I incorrectly assumed Apple would recognize the failure and replace it, just like any half decent company would. Imagine my surprise when the "genius" smiled and said, Oh you need a new battery, and that this was perfectly normal behavior. I guess they assume all Apple users are clueless. I'm sorry, this not perfectly normal, and has never happened to any Dell, Sony or Toshiba laptop that I've ever owned (or bought for my company).

If you need to buy one of these batteries, search around and go with any cheap clone knock-off battery that you can find for the MacBook. It can only be better (and cheaper).

    Bulging battery

    • Written by from Wenatchee

I'm on my 2nd. I wish someone would invent a new ( or compatible) battery design for the macbook pro 17" as I love my computer but am tired of having to watch the battery so closely to see when it starts to overheat and then bulge. I would never recommend this battery to anyone. I am afraid of it.

Is there a lower star than 1?

    • Written by from Louisville

This battery is terrible. In less than a year it was no longer taking a charge, you would think that Apple would see the defect in the product and at least fix it's mistake and re-engineer it. I'm a lifelong Apple buyer, but am very dissatisfied with this particular product. There doesn't seem to be a different option to take through a 3rd party (to my knowledge) so I guess that we are over a barrel as consumers. Another battery purchase will be my 3rd battery in a few short years, PLEASE START MAKING NEW BATTERIES or I will be broke.

The worst battery ever. This is my second one and I've had it for a little over a year and it has died just like my first one. Its a shame that we spend 129.00 for something that works so poorly.

    • Written by from Chicago

What is the problem with this product? today I woke up and guess what? the battery died again, for second time. Now I have to pay another $130 to get a new battery. This is my third time that I'm gonna buy it. I hope this time it lasts at least more than 2 years. Please if you know this product is a disaster you shouldn't charge $130. Please lower the price!

Two bulging batteries - at the same time!

    • Written by from Lancaster

I work with Macs on a daily basis to make a living. I'll give the two laptop batteries credit for not bulging after six years of pretty hardcore usage. In 2006, my company bought two 17" MacBook Pro's. Six years later the batteries in both laptops are bulging - one to a much greater, and disconcerting, degree than the other. Since they are both out of warranty, I guess I don't get half my paycheck this month... Thanks, Apple, for making me waste my rent money on a battery that should have been recalled.

    Low life span

    • Written by from Boulder

I've had three of these batteries in the last few years for my Mac book pro. I'd expect them to last much longer than they have. The battery gets fried and warps like crazy. I do leave it on most of the time but I'd still expect more.

    Horrible Product

    • Written by from Sylvania

You spend over $3,000 on a top of the line laptop and you expect things to work well. While the computer is great, this battery is garbage. Apple replaced my first bulging battery but after that, the next 3 continued to fail the exact same way. This is unacceptable and I can only assume that Apple hasn't done a product recall for these batteries because their 17 inch model is the least popular choice for mid-level consumers and therefore the amount of complaints are relatively low.
If you're someone like me who 6 years after buying their laptop still uses it, you're basically forced to shell out another $129.00 every year to keep the thing functional.
Maybe it's time I bite the bullet and buy one of those new shiny 15'' retina display models. Oh wait, it's $199.00 to replace that battery!

    Satisfied customer

    • Written by from antelope

I have had my MacBook for 5 years and recently started to have the swollen battery issue the impeded the function of my tracking pad. Compared with other laptops with rechargeable batteries I got a good life span on my battery. The only disappointment was the cost of the replacement...but I guess that comes with having a Mac.

    Terrible product

    • Written by from Canada

I've purchased three batteries for my 17" macpro and on every one of them the heat sink has failed. The first one last three years, while the second lasted two years, and the final one lasted only a year. This is by far the worst quality apple product I've encountered and unfortunately it is essential.
