Is there a lower star than 1?

This battery is terrible. In less than a year it was no longer taking a charge, you would think that Apple would see the defect in the product and at least fix it's mistake and re-engineer it. I'm a lifelong Apple buyer, but am very dissatisfied with this particular product. There doesn't seem to be a different option to take through a 3rd party (to my knowledge) so I guess that we are over a barrel as consumers. Another battery purchase will be my 3rd battery in a few short years, PLEASE START MAKING NEW BATTERIES or I will be broke.

    2nd Bulging Battery

Kinda disappointed. The 2nd battery I got at the end of 2009 is starting to bulge. The first one had the same problem. Gonna have to get a 3rd one soon. You'd think this problem would've been fixed. Third time the charm, perhaps?

Original Battery defective and no longer fits

I need to replace my original defective battery but don't intend to buy one until I know it has been redesigned. Hard to imagine Apple would not stand behind its product and replace defective designs. Just glad the expanded battery did not explode or the sharp metal edges did not injure anyone.

    What a disappointment...

The charge indicator lights still show a full charge on my bulging battery yet it will no longer fit in the battery bay. What would appear to be an obvious manufacturing defect is considered by Apple to be a normal symptom of battery consumption. If you're still covered by Apple Care, they'll replace it. If not, tough luck. You're on your own for a $129 replacement.
After many years and thousands of dollars invested in Apple products and stock, I'm dIisappointed to say the least.

    I hate these batteries...

I have a 4 year old MacBook pro and this is the 3rd battery I have had to replace due to it "bubbling" after 1 yr of use. 129.00 is way to much for a battery that has an 18 month lifespan. I have replaced 3 batteries in my sons MacBook pro also.

I love my Mac, but this is ridiculous they should at least make it 3-5 years before they quite literally blow-up.

I have been trying to figure out what I am doing wrong! I am saddened to learn that Mac produces such a product, but relieved to know that the problem is universal. I have obtained another 15' macbook pro and so far i have not experienced these problems. Is it worth buying my third battery for my older 17' macbook pro?

    Sane bulging battery issue

I came home after the memorial day weekend to find my 2007 17" MBP was rocking on the flat surface of the table. Turned it over to find the battery was sticking out and the case has split open. I removed it and it actually got worse overnight. Right now it the battery case is warped and one of the cells inside has swollen so the case is split open.

I came here to buy a replacement and see others with the same problem happening at the same age in the lifecycle. Apple can you investigate?

    Started great, aged gracelessly...

Battery started with about 4.5 hour of power. After "324" cycles and following all the instructions, my computer randomly cuts out at about thirty percent and needs to be "replaced now." Oh, yeah, the metal is warping/bulging and the glue is coming undone on the battery. Was good while it lasted, but I'm not too impressed with the life on this one.

Getting the "Battery Bulge" on the 17-inch MacBook Pro.

Second time within a year that I'll have to replace the battery.

Lame way to get people to upgrade to the new MacBook Pro.

    Not cool.

18 months, 265 cycles. Not good enough, simply put. Even IF I never calibrated it properly and didn't pay much attention to taking care of that (which couldn't be further from truth) this is not acceptable when you consider the machine it comes with.

Mac 17 is great, but the only good thing about its (eventually and finally) bulging battery is that the trackpad seemed to come back to life soon after I took out the battery (as someone else had pointed out before!).

I love Apple, but please please please fix this. I do not want to pay over 100 of whatever currency to go through this again. Until then, I guess I'll be using an extension cord.

    Bulging battery warped my case

    • Written by from Dallas

Worse, is that I didn't notice it because i was using an elevated platform (Griffin) to raise it to the height of my desktop 23" monitor and to reduce heat buildup. By the time I saw the problem, the entire case was warped. I forcibly bent the case back (yes, I know that's pretty stupid but I've done worse things to a computer) and it works better now (at least the latch locks a tad better.)

Nonetheless, like most people today, I've owned tons of gear, toys, equipment etc that use rechargeable batteries and find it interesting that I've never had a problem like this. I've had acid leaks from old batteries but that problem was usually discovered only when I was digging through an old box of outdated and discarded stuff.

And, of those leaks, a little cleaning and 80 percent of the time the device would operate fine with new batteries. I'd be fine if the battery had just expanded but the fact that it warped my case is like salt on the wound. Oh well.

MY BATTERY IS SPLITTING AND IS WARPED, WILL IT EXPLODED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shocking to see your beauty go up in flames, after all spending money to buy this machine and have something like a battery destroy your computer. I freaked out when I saw my computer lopped sided and discovered the battery was cracking, I then lifted the computer up and unplugged the power and removed the battery. Seriously what is up with this battery issue. My computer felt like it was going to exploded due to the high intense heat coming through the keyboards. The backside of the keyboards was to hot to touch and the fan kicked in at temperature of 73 degrees... I can't even watch a DVD movie on this thing without heating up and the fans blasting. Seriously this blows, when I'm working on a heavy photo shop file the laptop gets really hotttttt.

I was researching to buy another battery and came upon this posting.

Argh! and I'm a life long Apple fan.

    Apple failure no. # 1.

Have no idea why Apple has not been able to fix this problem.
I now have to get my Battery number 4. The computer runs so hot that the Battery expands physically and pushes on the track pad so it doesn't work.
This must be Apple's lowest rated product, but Apple does not care, as it must give them a steady income. Well done Apple.

    Original bulged, Apple responded

My 2008-era 17" MBP recently suffered the same fate as many have described here: Battery simply stopped working -- even though all indicators showed battery was fully charged and still fully functional, it wouldn't hold a charge. After less than 3 minutes on battery power, the MBP would hard-shutdown with no warning.

A couple days later, the trackpad started to act oddly. A few minutes of online research had me checking the physical shape of battery: BULGING in the center. I made an appointment with the "genius bar" at the local Apple store the next day and preceded to dig up, and print out, all similar accounts of this happening. I highlighted all the cases where a local store replaced the battery for free.

Turns out I didn't need all that research. The Tacoma store genius manager was my first contact and after one look at the battery immediately said, "we'll get you a new one right away." Five minutes later I was out the door with a brand new battery, no charge, no fuss.

    These are dangerous!

I am on my third battery. The first one fully swelled and sparked enough to leave scorch marks on my MacBook Pro 17. The swelling broke the screen and bent the case. Apple had to replace nearly the whole computer.

The second time this happened, the Genius bar employee told me that a battery swelling was part of what happens when a battery gets old and it's a sign I need to replace the battery (for a price).

THIS IS FALSE! A swollen battery is a sign the safety circuitry has failed. If your battery swells, it is a safety concern. Make the Apple employee tell you Apple says using a swollen battery is safe. They will try to use words like "I wouldn't" "In my opinion", make them tell you what APPLE says. They will then replace your battery.

Unbelievable garbage. They have decent performance when new but after a year of normal use, and not allowing the battery to drop below 20% capacity, my second battery swelled up to the point that it busted out of it's casing.

Meanwhile, the original battery on my 15" powerbook is still holding a one hour charge.
