Steve Jobs is a flippin cheapskate

    • Written by from SAN ANTONIO

You would think that a guy who is probably a billionaire, would be so kind as to solve the infamous battery bulge problem!! I recently noticed that my battery grew to twice its normal size like it had been pumping iron and was on some anabolic steroids!! I was shocked to see how many people have had the same issue. Bewildering! I owned a Sony Vaio for years and never had that kind of issue! Yea, it was no Macbook, but please!!

And the nonsense with the battery life giving out or that you have to cylce it properly is the most lame excuse I have ever heard of in my entirely life!! I'm in the auto business and that would be like me telling someone

"folks I apologize that your engine has fallen out of the car and left you stranded! That's normal wear and tear, and you probably didn't drive the car the correct amount of hours per day in a calendar year to give it time to rest!! Oh, I'm sorry I guess I didn't explain that quirk to you when you bought it! But not to worry folks you can buy a new one for only $3K installed!"

    HOGWASH!!!
Hey Jobs, instead of making more useless products like the ipad, why don't you set up an engineering team to solve this mess!! Oh yea, I forgot! Then you wouldn't be able to make more money to fund yet another useless and poorly designed apple product in the future!!!
    LATERS!! = (

Poor job Apple!! Definitely not buying another battery for now!

    Deffective Batteries? Dangerous? Need Recall?

    • Written by from Belfast

Same story here. (MacBook Pro 17 In, battery Manufactured in 2006). I inspected my computer closely and noticed that the battery pack had swollen considerably. I took it off immediately.

I've read many complaints on the Internet about these batteries, yet I don't see Apple recalling them for 17 inches Mac Book Pros. I have had many computers including PCs - Batteries don't swell unless there are defective and/or unless it has something to do with mac book pro overheating in general?

I hope Apple is aware of the issue and will offer a free replacement even though I'm out of warranty because it was working just fine until two days ago. I also hope the swelling/overheating didn't create any other issues.

    I'll let everyone know.

    warped battery

    • Written by from LOS ANGELES

I have had my MacBookPro for 4 years and now I have to replace the battery AGAIN because it has warped AGAIN. Only this time, it is outside the warranty period. What a bummer.

My laptop sits on a stand so it NEVER has to touch a surface and yet it STILL warps. No way it can overheat that way.

Also, I have hardly used the laptop since I got my iMac one year ago. So the battery just suddenly warped for no reason.

I am not happy with the "cheapness" of the product. It is way below the Apple standards in my opinion.

    Another expanding battery

    • Written by from Portland

    Ugh.
When my trackpad went haywire a few days ago I started looking online for an explanation and consequently realized that my battery was expanding and putting pressure on the back of the pad.
I took it out two days ago and it continues to expand.. one wonders when it will stop!
Buying a new one is not possible for me right now, so my MacBook is not as portable as it should be.
I'm not at all happy with this state of affairs.
(Of course the warranty has expired)
    Bah.

    Bloating

After 2 years this battery starts to bloat and can be very dangerous. Apple needs to address this issue to all of their macbooks.

    Battle of the bulge

    • Written by from Austin

My story is the same as others. 17" macbookpro. First battery bulged a good 1/4 " in the center. Apple store replaced it. Replacement battery is delaminating in the corner making it so it can't sit on a flat surface. Other complaints about this machine are that it does not wake easy from opening the lid. It turns on normally about 40% of the tries. Also, ever since upgrading to snow leopard it is much slower to switch users and I get many more spinning beach balls of death.

    Bulging still!

    • Written by from Miechów

After 16 months of a very careful use (according to suggestions by apple) battery started to bulge. Apple replaced this for a new one for free. After 16 months happens the same with the second one. Another problem is that I have to remove it even if it still works, because I'm afraid it would damage the computer....!

    Bad Batteries

    • Written by from Wyncote

I know batteries don't last forever but they shouldn't self destruct. This is the second battery I have had swelling issues with very bad design or components. This is a major problem .

    Bad Batteries.

    • Written by from Bozeman

So, I have read all of these reviews about people who don't travel with their computers getting some swelling from their 17" MacBook Pro's batteries. Well, I travel with my computer all the time, I actually let my computer battery die on a regular basis, I have an international business, and it has happened to me twice. I love the design of most apple products but this is one they should redesign. By the way, if your track pad quits clicking, you have a swollen battery. I almost bought a new $2600 macbook and the only thing wrong with mine was the battery.

    Not even a warning?

    • Written by from Los Angeles

"Oh - and by the way... you will have to replace the battery some day when you discover that it has expanded (for your protection) to the point of rendering your computer inoperable." At least i could have gotten a backup then instead of this alarming surprise. I though something was wrong with my trackpad. Fortunately (?) so many other people have "benefitted" from this "safety feature" that my first search immediately led me here. How could something this lame not be public knowledge already? ...Or at the very least revealed to the customer at purchase.

I am shocked that there is not a recall

    • Written by from Yorktown Heights

Given the number of people with the same issue, you really would think Apple would be concerned enough to do something about this. Generally very impressed with all things Apple- this is too bad.

    MacBook Pro 17" Battery Frustration

    • Written by from Newtown

I have a 2009 17" MacBook Pro and the battery bulged out in two years. I went to the Apple store to have it replaced because I thought it was defective and should get a new one at no charge (warranty or no warranty). I was told without a warranty I would be charged to have it replaced. I had no choice but to pay for a new battery.
I asked the genius at the genius bar what caused my battery to expand (swell)
and isn't it defective. I was told that this was normal due to expanding gases within the battery. If this is normal then I would recommend Apple telling this to their customers when the MacBook is purchased or print it on the box. Very disappointed
with this problem and the response I got from the "genius"!

    Bulging Battery from 2007 MBP

    • Written by from Olathe

Wow! I thought the issue was only mine and caused from overheating. My battery from my MBP, purchased in 2007, is also starting to bulge. A few months ago, the computer started shutting down when plugged in and battery being around 63%. Just a couple of weeks ago, it's started to bulge, and is only getting bigger. My wife said today that she had to remove it completely because the trackpad was totally messed up with it in.

I give the battery two stars because I was hoping it would last at least 4 years from my purchase date (sept, 07), which it almost did, and because when it worked, it worked well, but still, the warping issue and messing up the trackpad is kind of scary, and not lasting for longer when the battery health is still adequate is unacceptable. With all these bad reviews, one would think Apple would replace them for free, but I guess that's just wishful thinking. They did replace my faulty Nvidia vid card for free when outside of the 1 year Applecare plan, why not this when it is clearly Apple who is at fault here and not the end users.

    Expanded Battery

    • Written by from Los Angeles

My battery was working fine, but expanded enough that it would no longer fit in the computer. Didn't expect that from a "high end" computer. Won't be buying and further Apple products...

    Horrible Battery

    • Written by from Sunrise

Going on my third battery. I replaced the last one about a year ago because it bulged. This one is doing the same, bulging. I love Apple but this stinks. My computer is about three years old. I guess you have to buy a new battery every year....ridiculous

    Song remains the same ...

    • Written by from san carlos

Yet another puffed up battery victim here.
Had my 17" MBP about 20 months. Noticed the battery bulging when I pulled the MBP out of shoulder bag.
    Definitely a ?!#?!! moment.
Didn't notice the puffiness of the internal side of the battery until my trackpad and button started to bulge out the top of the keyboard area.

Given Apple's history with battery issues and heat dissipation issues, you would think they'd have gotten a clue by now. Seems they have not.
Perhaps this will be my last Mac after all.
Can't wait for the class action suit on this one.

    Horrible Battery

    • Written by from pine bluff

Apple is usually pretty good about acknowledging problems when they occur, but the "bulging battery" has been a problem for nearly 5 years and it is usually in the MB Pro line. The cost of maintaining a MB Pro is unbelievable when you add onto its acquisition costs and then add $129 a year (or more) to purchase batteries. It is really enough to make a person sick. I'm at the point now of not buying another battery and just tossing the computer, because I think that four batteries in three years is just about enough.

    Dangerous

    • Written by from Northfield

My battery swell about 1 inch outside of the carcass and it is also making the touch pad not to work. It looks like it is about to explode after one year of use.
