    Another bulging battery

    • Written by from Tulsa

Second replacement battery lasted a little over a year. Looking at third party batteries which I've NEVER done for an Apple product. I'm sure the heat these laptops kick out plays a big factor in the bulging battery epidemic.

    One and Done

    • Written by from universal city

Bought my first (now only) Mac 2+ years ago. Loved the OS and stability, hated the initial cost which now has become a recurring cost thanks to the battery. You'd think Apple would at least give us a break in the price of replacing them.... right.

And yes.... I'm telling my friends, co-workers. Beware of the FaceBook impact, Apple! You can't afford it.

    17" MacBook Pro battery

    • Written by

I bought my 17" MacBook Pro in August 2006, along with one for my son at the same time. BOTH our batteries expanded before the Applecare expired. Mine went first and I bought a new one before finding out that it could have been replaced on Applecare. My son's battery did the same thing and so he was able to get it replaced on his Applecare (which I paid for). With being unemployed for 2 years, I couldn't afford to renew two Applecares, let alone one.

Now, my second battery has done the same thing; expanding to 1 inch thick! I carefully managed to take it out of the laptop before it did any damage. A few other MacBook Pro owners that I know have never heard of this happening. In my household, 3 out of 4 have done that. I now have to buy yet another as I can't risk damaging my laptop. Is this typical of this 17" MacBook Pro battery?

    bulging battery

    • Written by from CAMBRIDGE

I came to pick my laptop up the other day to find that the battery has suddenly completely deformed and is bulging - needless to say it is completely fubar. This is not simply a long term degradation of the product, it is a complete failure.

    BULGING Macbook Pro 17' Battery

    • Written by from Mineola

I woke up this morning to find a bulging battery case on the back of my Macbook Pro. I am disgusted as I've had this laptop for less than 2 years. Futher, I live outside the US, so getting service in Egypt is not so easy.

According to the Apple website, my service contract has expired so now I'll have to shell out another 179.00 for a new battery. This is unacceptable.

Bulging Battery freezes my track pad select button

    • Written by from Scottsdale

Same issue with my 2 year old Macbook Pro. My battery started bulging two days ago. I didn't notice it at first. I was trying to click on my track pad select button but it was frozen in place and would not click. After taking my battery out, I could then click my select button. At this point, the only way I can use my battery is by leaving one of the release buttons for the battery compartment unlocked. Looks like I need a new battery since now the back casing is releasing from the battery. Also, the battery cycle is at 279 and I read somewhere that it shouldn't show below 300. Thanks for everybody's comments. I thought I was imagining things when at first I saw a slight bulge in the battery case. Now I know I'm not the only one with this issue.

    Yet _another_ bulging battery

    • Written by from Lethbridge

This is my second battery, with the first lasting approximately a year.

It started with the computer randomly shutting down when on battery while there was reportedly lots of charge left. Then a while later I noticed that the computer didn't sit flat anymore, and upon inspection saw that the battery was bulging and had split its case!

Now I have to run without a battery for fear of a fire hazard, and I only get 1/2 the performance that I should.

    I'm going back to BSD.

Battery OK for about a year

    • Written by from New Bern

The thing worked fine for about a year, but then it started swelling and now it won't take a charge at all. The condition in the system profiler said it was "Good", but it was not good at all. The problem may not be the battery, however, as the extreme heat of the MBP is probably what's causing the problem.

    Terrible

    • Written by from Arlington

This battery never held a charge for more than 2 hours when it was brand new and after 2 years, I was lucky if it lasted longer than 45 minutes. Now, after the battery surged and burnt my power cord, it has expanded and won't fit back into my MacBook. Apple, rather than admitting they built a poor product, blamed me for leaving my battery plugged in too long. Leaving a laptop plugged in for a day or two shouldn't fry a power cord or blow up a battery. If Apple cared about its customers it would refund and replace every one of these batteries.

    Unbelievable

    • Written by from Wendell

I just had my MAC Pro 17 inch out a couple of weeks ago and everything looked fine. I just pulled my MAC out again and my battery was bulged way out. It is toast. I order a new replacement battery but it is very scary to see it that way. It could have leaked and caused a great deal of damage. Now I wonder about my MAC Air. If it were to happen on it I would image my laptop would be damage beyond repair. Makes me hesitant to buy another laptop with a non-user replaceable battery.

I also looked to see if there was a recall on these but didn't see any. Too bad. 8-(

    battery :(

    • Written by from Fountain Valley

I bought my MacBook Pro in January 2007 (my battery says 2006) and I noticed my computer would just shut off at around 26% battery life, then 30% and that's was a few weeks ago. Well today tonight it warped and I believe it died. luckily I had my power adapted plugged in the whole time as I was reformatting lots of videos and I think it couldn't handle the heat which I usually use a pad that absorbs the heat or one with fans. I'm disappointed that it died as I did use the adapter most of the time and occasionally the battery and let run out. I can't believe the battery looks like it's about to explode and wonder if I had left it in much longer if it would have and maybe short circuit the computer. These should have been recalled. Now I will be out $116.00

    :(

    Another one bites the dust...

    • Written by from Peoria

I have already had issues with the bulging battery in my MBP - thankfully it was at a time when Apple was willing to take control of the situation and replace it, no charge. I have recently had a hard drive failure - losing everything... have been working without a "C" key for a while, and decided to put a little money into it to fix it up. A few hundred dollars later, with a new hard drive and a new keyboard - the battery exploded again. SO FRUSTRATED! Do I keep putting money into this or just call it a loss? ugh.

    Terrible

    • Written by from Ventura

This is such a safety hazard. 2nd time by battery has swollen and burst open. After the first time, I replaced it and used the battery sparingly. Didn't seem to help. Almost like these batteries have a self-destruct mechanism in them so that Apple can get us all to upgrade to their latest and greatest laptop.

Funny thing is that everybody who has written a review says how terrible Apple is for allowing this. I'm the only one who has actually done anything... I bought a PC laptop, and built a PC desktop. Bought a OSX Lion disc for 29.99 and installed it on both. Now I'm not stuck with overpriced Apple hardware and can upgrade to my hearts content. I'll never have this battery problem again.

    Bulging battery

    • Written by from Larchmont

After 2.5 hrs of good service in my MacBook pro 17 the battery started to bulge and then busted open. It was pretty disturbing and seemed dangerous.

I called apple support and they basically told me they would not replace the battery - it is out of warranty and I'm on my own. I am a loyal apple fanby and have bought tens of thousands of dollars of apple products.

    Thanks Apple!!

    17" MacBook Pro Battery

    • Written by from Supply

Bought my MacBook 10/2007. Have enjoyed the trouble free operation until I noticed that the battery charge got shorter, typically 30 to 60 minutes. Than I started to have difficulty with the touchpad and operation became most troublesome. After reading some of the other users comments, I checked my battery and found that it was swollen. I also read that others had removed the battery after startup when using the charger. I found that I could use my MacBook without the battery and the touchpad difficlties were gone. Still awaiting delivery of a replacement battery. Bought my wife a 13" MacBook Pro which has the newer battery yielding almost 10 hours of charge.

    exploded / puffy battery

    • Written by from Shelton

I have had absolutely zero problems with all of my Apple purchases (which has been very substantial.) However, my MacBook Pro 17" battery seems to have exploded from the inside, making one side 1.25" tall verses the normal .5." Obviously, it will not work since the inside is now exposed to the elements and all of the interior parts are puffy. I bought my MacBook Pro for $3,514 on my MacBook Pro in 2007-- without any success (my warranty was up) through calling Apple's technical service, I hope this problem will be resolved at my local Apple Store. I will be disappointed if I have to pay for a new one, after already spending well over $10,000 in Apple Goods over the past 10 years.

    +1 on the bulging battery

    • Written by from Lansing

Same thing happened to me, track pad stopped working, couldn't figure out why. Then I discovered the aluminum backing of my battery peeling off. Taking the battery out, I noticed a large bulge on the back, which presses up against the track pad sensors from underneath. Came here to see how much they cost to replace and was very surprised to see how many other people have had the same issue. Disappointing.

    Battery malfunction and bulging

    • Written by from Miami Beach

After using my MacBook Pro every day since sept. 2007 I've started experiencing some erratic response from it's battery. A few days ago, it started to "expands", I mean, it bulged!!! I'm really dissapointed... I'm using Apple computers since early 80's and this is the first product that seems to be "out of the Mac standard"!! I'll take to the Apple store, hope they give me an answer... and hope it's not I've to spend $130 in a new battery, of course!!!!

Dear Steve, don't let me down.

    exploding battery

    • Written by from Bozeman

I bought my macbook in Aug 2006. I've never had a problem with battery life with almost constant use. Although I've noticed from time to time it runs very hot. Last night when I picked it up I noticed the battery had bulged. Not really sure what caused it to explode? Heat maybe?
