The Nike running kit is just a glorified pedometer that can break your ipod if you sweat.

I found it to be fairly accurate when calculating mileage, but highly inaccurate when deducing pace, and that's even after doing a recommended calibration by running on a treadmill.

The real problem lies in the poor design, as the connector that connects to your ipod is a sweat magnet, and will assist in pumping sweat into your ipod, killing it in several months. Armbands don't help, in fact, nike armbands probably make the situation worse. My closet is an ipod graveyard filled with running kit victims.

I'd recommend to potbelly pigs and people who don't use it.

    Inaccurate (go for a Garmin)

Unfortunately this device is only accurate if you run on flat terrain at a constant pace. This means no tempo runs, no intervals, no fartleks, no hills, etc -- unless you don't care if the distance is not accurate. Furthermore, you can never really evaluate PRs because you never know how far you go. I've noticed discrepancies of over 10% (ie, if I go for a 10 mile run, it may be off by an entire mile). This device is definitely economical and sleek, but the bells and whistles just don't make a difference if it doesn't work well.

If you really want to track your distance, pace, etc. go for a Garmin Forerunner (I would recommend the 305 over the 405).

I use the Nike+ system with the sensor in a Nike+ enabled shoe and the I-Pod touch.
The interface on the I-Pod often loses communication with the sensor during a workout and stops collecting distance and pace info. You have to keep checking to make sure it's working, but when it stops the only thing you can do is end that workout and start another one. This means you lose part of the workout. The information collected can't be corrected manually and only feeds data to the Nike+ website via I-Tunes. You can work with the data on this website, set goals, enter challenges, etc. but there's no other way to use the information logged unless you create a spreadsheet and enter the data manually. This limits "usability". The applications on Nike+ website are rather useless because the data collection is so unreliable. Customer support is pretty much "We know the system has a lot of errors, and we're working on it. I've used the system for 6 weeks over 150K of workouts and have seen no improvement on the Nike+ system or website. Don't use this system if you're serious about tracking your progress. Apple & Nike have a lot of trouble shooting to do before this system will work the way it should.

Can't give this low enough marks...

Simply put, this is another one of Apple's classic"insanely great" ideas that suffers from one of Apple's classic problems: poor implementation. (Anyone else here remember the Newton?) The battery, as many here have stated, doesn't last long. I actually tried to hack open the sensor with an Exacto knife (not recommended) and a vise, but getting the thing back together and working was the challenge. A lot of sticky parts inside. If Apple had simply made a clamshell case where you could replace the CR2032 battery (like my HR monitor chest strap) this could be an amazing product. Instead, it's total garbage. And bad for the environment. So much for Apple's "green" approach...

Doesn't hold up to sweat during workouts.

I'm torn on this one, because the Nike + iPod setup really has changed my workout habits. Being able to track all that data is simply amazing, and it's really encouraged me to run a lot more.

That said, the product quality leaves something to be desired. I have used the Nike + kit with my iPod Nano with a variety of different "sport" armbands, and still sweat gets through and interferes with the connection between the receiver and the iPod. Sometimes it causes the distance to be erroneous, and sometimes it just stops the workout altogether and then tells me that there's no receiver installed. I've even had to replace a receiver that simply failed after extended use (and for you Nike+ folks, I'm only at the beginning of the green level).

C'mon, Apple. Couldn't you at least design a workout product that doesn't suffer catastrophic failure due to sweat? Sweat being a natural byproduct of working out and all. I'm not a fan of having to replace my receiver constantly or having to try to find an armband that is completely impervious to sweat AND allows me to have the receiver installed.

    Can't get the distance right

I've been trying to calibrate this thing for a month and it still won't work. I just went on a regulation track and ran 800 meters (.5 miles) at a comfortable pace in 3:47. However, my ipod said I ran .39 miles at almost a 10 min. pace. I know i'm not fast, but it was off by a tenth of a mile. I tried it at a .25 mile on the same track and it said i only went .21 miles. I'm kinda fed up with it.

For something so small and easy to use, the Nike + iPod remote is a great motivational piece of equipment that I don't exercise without. For those who don't have Nike shoes, guess what, neither do I and it still works great! Just remember to frequently adjust your weight settings to maintain the calibration accuracy.

Major problems syncing, lost runs, unable to calibrate. This app and sensor helped me lose 50lbs but now I am looking to find something that works correctly with the newest iOS. It is sad to say that an app that is oh so popular could get ignored during such a huge update.

    Doesn't Calibrate. Doesn't work w 5g Nano - DO NOT BUY

Please, if you have a nano, save yourself. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. All my friends use it with an iTouch or iPhone and think its awesome. I have had ELEVEN failed calibration attempts with this piece of junk. I think the problem actually lies with the terrible 5g nano that I have. The automatic calibration feature flat out does not work. I have run over two miles to meet the half-mile calibration setting for it to tell me "calibration complete". What does that mean? That it thinks I run a 21-minute mile? I've tried - at least 8 times now - running 1 mile and then choosing End Workout and then the calibration feature. Half the time, it won't allow me to recalibrate even though I've reset the run setting, but most of the time, I think the problem lies with the fact that the nano won't allow me to scroll to the actual distance completed. It states I ran .14 miles out of 1, and when I tried to scroll to set the distance the nano would not let me scroll past .29 miles. I HATE IT. Running shoe companies should not dabble in technology.

I bought this thinking it was a great way to track my runs and with the price I did not think I could go wrong. Well mine lasted only one month! So I bought a new running sensor and it still did not work. I was told by an Apple employee that this product has to be replaced every few (2-3) months. I did not want to spend $20 every few months. I bought a Polar running system and love it so much. I think Apple and Nike really missed the mark on this product and it quality.

I have had mine for 1 1/2 years and it still works like a charm. I make sure to turn it off after the run and the battery seems to be just fine. After I ran the Gate River Run 15k I calibrated it and ever sense it is spot on. I love how you can decided on a fly how you want it to track distance, time, or calories. Working with my iPod touch it is seamless and so practical - great software! If you're like me it will challenge you and keep you focused when you need it! Before the product, I ran a mile and I was done... Now I am running 10 miles easy. Thanks Apple and Nike.

If you are just starting to take your running from an occasional workout to fun runs this is a good product for you. I loved this system for about 9 months...until I started to take my running really seriously. You see, this product works well with Nike+ shoes, but as most serious runners know, those shoes are not the ones that you train for a serious race in. The vocal feedback it gives you and the website are really great support to keep you motived in achieving harder goals in running. There does come a point (mine was after the 2nd sensor) that you decide it is not enough and you move up to a "big kids' toy" like a garmin.

its really worth the money i think to its potential of 1000 hours of life and make custum workouts id think that anyone who enjoys a good jog or walk would really like this. although there is one problem, it some times goes blank on me because if you do not have the special nike+ shoes you need to buy a clip on to atach to your shoes and even though it doesnt move at all i have to put it on my left shoes and keep my ipod touch in my right pants pocket and i think im supposed to get an accesory to put the ipod touch on my are but its still over all pretty good.

Nike's app makes running a lot more interesting!

This thing is great! As far as a running tool, I've had no complaints. I calibrated the unit then took it four times around the 1/4 mile track. Just for verification, I compared distances using my old stand alone GPS unit. The results were identical.

As far as the calorie burning goal feature, I compared the results to estimates from some online sources. The estimates seemed reliable.

Then I tried it for dance aerobics. There is no way we only burned 104 calories after an hour of Zumba! But then again, it wasn't really designed for that. To accurately measure that kind of activity, they would have to develop some kind of wrist band and belt to accompany the shoe unit. If Nike and Apple's research and development team could develop that, I would be extremely pleased. Then we could use the iPod to estimate calories burned doing almost any activity.... :)

....As far as the current technology goes, I am very satisfied. Normally I find running to be quite dull. But they sure came up with a good idea with this one. It made running fun!

I LOVE THIS. I use the Nike+ with my 2nd gen ipod touch. I love that you can press the home button and it'll tell you your progress, calories burned, distance, time, and pace! I also really like that every 50 calories you burn you get updated. This is definitely a great motivator for people who are trying to get out and run more. In conclusion, GREAT PRODUCT!
