it is just like Toyota's defective parts

Bought MB-Pro about fourteen(14) months ago since I used Macs at work (not notebooks) as a mechanical design engineer. Mac is the appropriate tool (at premium price, of course) for pro's, and it always performed multi-tasking for me better than PC's BUT certainly not better than SUNS Micro Sys (those who have used will agree w/ it).
Okay, Bottom line: MB-P a good computer, w/ a real bad or leaky gas tank, yes you got it....the battery. It has a really really really bad battery which didn't live up to its name (Sony made this for Mac), regardless...it is a bad battery.
Also, don't listen to any1 telling you that the battery doesn't get affected when its fully charged & you are running it on the power adapter, not true. It DOES get affected, even your system (Sys Profiler > Power) status tells you otherwise.
After all, there is no such a thing as perfect vehicle OR perfect computer.

Having used my laptop daily and quite heavily for the past two years, and haven't had a single problem with the battery life. After a little over an hour of watching movies, it's still got over 50% juice left. Full charge capacity is still at 4251 after 200 cycles, battery's at 75% health according to iStat as well. According to Apple's suggested use/charging policies, I've treated it quite poorly as well. Not sure why so many have had problems.

    Great Battery is used properly

I have had my 15" MacBook Pro for almost three years now and I'm still on the original Battery, it has 440 cycles and is still at 60% Health. I can still watch a full hour and a half worth of video on full brightness before it dies. The trick is to be as strict as possible about cycling it properly by completely discharging it before you plug it in again, and fully charging it before unplugging it.

    Terrible!!

My first battery died shortly before my 1-year warranty had expired. Apple replaced the battery with a new one, but it was reduced to about 2% of its capacity within a few months. Now I'm left with a laptop that will shut down instantly if the power cord is knocked out of place. I spent over $2,000 for a laptop with a battery worth less than the lint in my pocket. Of course, after I had received my second battery my warranty was over and I couldn't get ahold of Apple to see if they would do anything about the second one. My cycle count on the second battery was 57 when it died. I followed all recommended practices for maintaining battery life and even have a new power adapter.

    2 Years and Counting

I have been on the same battery for over two years. It is on 356 cycles with 30% life left. I haven't really done anything special to keep it from dying. Nowadays, I always have to plug it in when I take it places, otherwise it will die in about 30 minutes. I supposed that could be a problem for some people, but what do you expect from a battery that is over 2 years old. Keep in mind that I am a web designer and that my macbook pro and charger have seen many many coffee shops. Overall, I am very pleased with the battery and charger.

Worked fine for me until I installed Windows 7

I am not sure why so many people are complaining about this battery. I had mine for three years and it worked great. Then, I installed Windows 7 on my Macbook Pro, and that, for some unknown reason, fried the battery. Afterwards, I could only get 30 minutes out of it (before I played around with Windows 7, the battery had 1.5 hours of life in it). So a word of caution... Don't install Windows on your Mac notebooks!

    Cycle and Airflow

I get very good battery life considering all the work I do on my Macbook Pro. But I DO Cycle my battery once a week, which is letting your battery go down to basically 1 or 2%, and then plugging in your laptop until it is fully charged. This WILL extend the life and use of your battery. I didn't do it with my last Mac and paid the price with more batteries. So far, over a year and this one is working great. BUT one thing is the heat that is generated with the Macs. As great as they are, I had burnt out my memory in my first Powerbook because of the heat. Since then I use a Targus 17 inch cooling pad, and I haven't had a problem since. You've got to keep your computer as cool as possible. So Cycle and keep cool... you'll be happy!

no life span, Apple should recall

    • Written by from Portland

Even with following the proper charging cycles, plan on this battery having a 1 hour lifespan within the first 6 months of use. Sometimes, even when the battery icon says you have another hour left, the computer will completely shut down mid-use and will take 30 minutes of being plugged in before the battery charges enough for it to turn on. This is extremely stressful when you're working on deadlines and don't have 30 minutes to wait for your computer to charge. In my opinion, Apple should recall all of their macbook pro batteries, or just replace them for free.

    Horrible battery life

I agree that the battery life is horrible. My MacBook has made it over 3.5 years but suddenly in the span of 3 days I went from having an hour of charge to 0 charge. If my charger becomes unplugged the computer shuts down in a second.
At the rate we buy them I don't at all like the price I have to pay each time for a new battery.

Disappointed with the battery life. After a year and a half mine was toast. I even bought the apple care plan and they wouldn't replace it. Talk about frustrating. Great computer, but when you don't take care of the people who are trying to take care of the merchandise bought from you. It really hurts the overall product.

    Junk of Battery

I have already gone through 3 batteries in the last 2 years. I do the cycles properly and to no avail, I honestly think they should do a much better job at making them last longer. I understand its like a cars tire but folks you do the tires rotation and they sure last you a long time. (Sorry Apple) But your batteries are just a piece of junk.

I'm replacing the 2nd battery on this laptop. The latest lasted 21 cycles. It's outside the 90 day warranty so I'm out another $130. Calibrating did no good, all of the resets did no good. You can't fix garbage. Apple should be ashamed of themselves.

Let's be clear, I love my Macbook Pro, However Macbook batteries are another story on to themselves. I am going through my second dead battery within the spam of six months; I have charged my batteries according to the instructions and it has been no use. In these hard times I don't have extra money to throw at my Mac due to Apple's incompetence in making a long lasting battery.

But what choice do I have?

    • Written by from Huntington Beach

Yeah, there is a problem with these batteries. I've had 2 replaced under warranty in the last 18 months but now the warranty is expired and I'll have to shell out the cash or always be plugged in. Your credit card issuer MAY offer to extend the 12 month warranty if you purchase a NEW battery. Thats my plan, at least I know I'm good for another 24 months for $130. Not the best, but gotta make it work!
Cycling the battery will help make it last, try to do that.

Not a good battery AT ALL for the price.

I bought a new battery for my MacBookPro after having it one year. I have had this battery now just over a year with, so far, a total of 203 charge cycles. I used to get 2.5 to 3 hours out of it, movie watching included, but now I'm lucky to get just about an hour from it.
Granted 'Mack' is my good friend, 'he' never leaves my side, but I feel with the superior products Apple is putting out on the market at these prices they need to do better with the life duration of this particular battery. One year is not good enough. If this must be the case then put the price down, otherwise I feel bad to even think that they may be trying to milk us for the small accessories that we have no choice to replace.

    Defective design

    • Written by from Winter Haven

49 of 52 people found this useful

This battery obviously has a design flaw. Too many of them develop a problem where they just stop putting out power even though they have a substantial amount of charge left. My original was replaced under warranty and now the replacement has developed the same problem. It's worse than a worn out battery that won't hold much of a charge because with those you get a warning before they die. With these the computer just shuts off without warning.

Bad Apple. Bad, bad Apple. Could be worse, though. Could be one of those models where the battery is internal.
