15" Macbook Pro original battery for laptop purchased in 2007

    • Written by from Cochiti Lake

Just had to jump into this fray on these batteries. I purchased my 15" Macbook Pro in the fall of 2007 and continued to use it non-stop until I purchased the smaller and lighter Macbook Pro 13" in August 2011. The original 15" battery was still giving me about 30 minutes of work time until early 2012 (it has since died completely), providing me with about 5 years of continuous use. I am now about to purchase a new battery for my 15". I will review it again after I see how the new 15" battery performs. PS--both computer and battery survived having a small chandelier fall on it from a ceiling weakened by too much rain! MAC's really are "built tough"!

    Great Battery

    • Written by from Byron Center

I don't know what everyone is complaining about. I bought my 15 inch macbook pro in the late summer of 07, and i'm still running the original battery. yes, it holds significantly less charge than it did when i got it, but i'm just now looking into getting a new one. I use my macbook for my graphic design classes, so i'm constantly on it. I have had no issues with "swelling" or my computer shutting off randomly. It had a normal life cycle, slowing holding less charge as it got older. It gets hot, but what computer doesn't? All in all, very satisfied with the product. I'll be buying my next one straight from apple.

    no problems whatsoever

    • Written by from oxford

i have had the same macbook pro for nearly four years and just this month the battery condition went from "normal" to "replace soon." i don't plan on replacing it until it changes to "replace now," and i must say that i am very impressed with how long it has lasted. i just recently noticed that it isn't holding a charge as well as it used to. as i said before, i am very impressed with the battery. not one complaint here! some people say that this battery will only last a year; but if you take care of it, it will last a long long time!

    MacBook Pro Battery Life

    • Written by from Glendale

Unlike many of the reviews I've just read, I've had my MacBook Pro for almost 3 years and am on the original battery. I still get just under 2 hours of use. I probably don't use my laptop as much as a college student or someone that uses their laptop as their primary computer as I have two iMac's that I use at home almost exclusively. But I use my laptop when I travel which is often and am on it a great deal. I would not trade my Mac for any other brand of laptop out there and I've had a few. This is the best.

    Self-induced Battery Death

    • Written by from Victoria

I bought my MBP just over two years ago and finally decided to buy a new battery now that my current one was close to 5% health (nearly committing suicide). I did all the things I shouldn't have with it; leaving it plugged in while using and @100%, recharging it when it was still above 10%, leaving it plugged in for a week while it was off an I was out of town. So I wasn't surprised that its not doing its job.
If you look after your battery PROPERLY then you shouldn't get the short life problems.

And really, whats the point in writing bad reviews about a product that you have no choice about buying, its not like we have any other choices for battery purchases. lol

    Best I could ask for

    • Written by from Fremont

I have had my battery for 15 months (1 year 3 months) and it is still running great. i get about 3-4 hours of charge while running Aperture, and Safari. My Battery Health (accodring to iStat Pro) is 94%.....AMAZING.....15 months and only a 6% drop. I Love my Battery. It beats out my wifes Dell, my sisters HP, and my moms gateway. LOVE This Battery. For those of you who are having problems, try cycling your battery Trust me its worth it)

    Works Great

    • Written by from Columbus

The battery works just fine. For the people having problems are you actually setting the battery? You have to charge it completely and then run it down and then recharge it, something like a battery reset.

    Cycle the Battery!

    • Written by from Leadville

You have to cycle the battery, just like Apple tells you too in the owners manual. It's simple to do, and you only have to do it once a month. I've had my macbook pro for almost a year now and the battery lasts about 3 hours depending on what I'm doing. Which is another thing. If your running on battery power and doing very processor intnsive apps, like photo editing, video editig, burning cd's, converting or importing songs in iTunes, of course your battery is going to run down fast. People expect too much from great Apple products. They can't do it all. Go try the battery on an HP, Sony, or Dell running windows. It literally lasts an hour if your lucky while only typing or web surfing. Windows has no energy saving preferences. My girlfriend has a gateway laptop and she can't even use it unless it's plugged in.

    Awesome Battery Life

    • Written by from somerset

Many people complain of poor battery life which i have never experienced i think the problem these people may have is that they need to change their settings such as turn the backlight down to its lowest setting which the screen is still completely visible when the light is on very low, turn off the keyboard lights, and set their computer to battery saver mode if you do these things your computer can easily hold a charge for four or five hours Mine does it all the time

    Good Battery life

    • Written by from Calmar

I have had no problems with my battery in the MBP. I leave it plugged in all the time near electrical plugs it is now three years old and nearly 100 cycles and yes once in a while I run it down to 20 per cent. I used to have problems with the unit getting too hot and burning my knees and I don't think that is good for the battery so I downloaded the AP Fan Control and run the fans faster and now it doesn't burn my knees.

    One of the best Batteries.

    • Written by from Papillion

Lasted over 4 hours when first new.
I use battery power ALL the time.
I stayed above 90% health until around 300 cycles.
Pretty good for a battery that's rated to stay about 80% at 200 cycles.
My battery is 2 years old this month.
Ive got 718 cycles on it and I'm at 63% health.
Ive gotten my fair share of use out of it. I'm extremely happy, I will definitely be buying another!

Santa Rosa MBP 2.2 Battery Life at nearly two years

    • Written by from Fort Myers

I was one of the first to get a new Santa Rosa 2.2 laptop. I have used the machine quite a bit for work on a degree and also personally as a mobile machine. I have a program, iStat pro, that tells me that I have 132 cycles on the battery and 85% of life left in it. In 3 weeks I will have used the machine 2 years running on the original battery. I usually have the machine plugged in when home and occasionally use it with battery in the family room and when away on trips or out around town. I have not purposely planned to cycle it. Perhaps people should share their typical use to compare battery life. Mine is mostly plugged in. Currently I get about 2:45 run time with 85% life left on the aged battery.

    Almost 3 years strong!

    • Written by from Northbrook

I've got a Macbook Pro from the week they were released, and for the first 6 months or so, the computer was always plugged in and being used, it never went anywhere, until I tried using it off the desk one day and was amazed (though, I expected it) that the battery only lasted about 9 minutes! After rigorously cycling the battery for a few weeks, I brought its ability to power the computer back to about 2 hours. Now, over another year later, I still get about an hour and thirty minutes of use under heavy load out of the original battery.

I'll have a new battery arriving in hopefully a few days, I'm looking forward to over 3 hours of life again, that'll be awesome.

I've had many laptops over the years and Apple's batteries have always amazed me, back from my PowerBook 150 (which still gets an hour and a half out of the original battery) to now, with my MacBook Pro's abused battery with over 500 cycles, still an hour and a half strong.

It's Not Me - It's Definitely the Battery

    • Written by from Brooklyn

My husband and I bought a MBP in March of 2006. I'm a stickler for details, so I know that I followed all of the battery directions. Ours got very hot and 2-3 months after purchase, it started freezing up, it wouldn't let us shut it down. It wouldn't hold a charge for more than 30 minutes. Finally, I started checking reviews and discovered that it wasn't just us. Many other users were reporting battery issues. We finally broke down and purchased a new battery and VOILA! No more problems. Now we get about 5 hours worth of juice from a fully charged battery - 3 if were online.

My other Mac friends and I have all determined that we are all die-hard Mac users, but the key is never to purchase first generation items. Let Apple work out the kinks and wait for the 2nd generation! That, and read reviews before purchasing. In this case, thankfully it was only a battery issue and not the MBP. We also have a Mac mini and I'm thinking of getting a MBA for use at work because I can't stand my PC! It's dreadfully slow and it just feels like I'm using an antique!

Got 4 Great Years From Original Battery

    • Written by from Santa Monica

In fact, I'm still using the original battery, which has gone from supplying 4+ hours of use down to an hour and a half. Why am I replacing it? Other than the Service Battery message it displays, it has been dying without warning at around the 30% level.

It has far exceeded my expectations. The only thing I can guess about those complaining of short battery life is that they primarily use their MacBook Pro while plugged into the AC outlet. I plug mine in only to charge and 90% of my use is battery only. I only hope my second battery is equally as reliable!

After 5 years I finally need a new battery. Very impressed with the overall battery life on my mac. For those who have had battery failures so soon are more than likely using there battery wrong. You SHOULDN'T ever run your computer while it is plugged into AC power while the battery is in the computer. This will kill a battery in no time. Take the battery out and charge it after you shut the computer down. It will still run on AC power with no battery in.

I've had my laptop for three years, and I have to admit, i treat it horribly (constantly charging it). Yet, despite my horrible treatment of it, it still has a battery life of 45 mins. After 3 years of misuse and mistreatment, it is still powering through. An excellent battery for an excellent laptop!

    322 cycles!!!

    • Written by from Bloomsburg

Just hit the 300 mark on cycles my battery has been through and it just now started to fail on me. I think the MBP is a wonderful machine and has never given me a problem what so ever. I purchased my MPB in Dec '06 and never followed and battery recharging plan, I mean seriously who has time for that. All in all, I have no complaints over the battery or design of the MBP. Go APPLE!!
